Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) can help to prevent depression, but identification of the most important psycho-biological pathways involved is unclear. The improvement of cardio-respiratory fitness (CRF) in response to MVPA can vary markedly, we therefore examined the association between CRF and the incidence of depressive symptoms.

We used data from The Maastricht Study, a large population-based prospective-cohort study. CRF was estimated at baseline from a graded submaximal exercise protocol and MVPA was measured with accelerometry. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the validated Dutch version of the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, both at baseline and during annual follow-up over five years. Cox proportional hazards models were used.

A total of 1,730 individuals without depressive symptoms at baseline were included in the analysis. During the 5-year follow-up, n=166 (9.6%) of individuals developed depressive symptoms. Compared to individuals with a low CRF, those with a moderate-to-high CRF had a significantly lower risk of developing depressive symptoms, independent of MVPA (medium CRF HR = 0.49 (95%CI = 0.33-0.72); high CRF HR = 0.48 (95% CI = 0.30-0.75). These associations were adjusted for age, sex, level of education, diabetes status, smoking status, alcohol use, energy intake, waist circumferences and antidepressant medications.

PHQ-9 is a validated screening instrument, but it is not a diagnostic tool of depression.

Long-lasting effects of drugs of abuse rely on their ability to hijack glutamate receptor activity and long-term synaptic plasticity processes like long-term potentiation and depression. Transfers of patients, who may be colonized with resistant bacteria, are considered to be an important driver of promoting resistance. Even though transmission rates within a hospital are often low, readmissions of patients who were colonized during an earlier hospital stay lead to repeated introductions of resistant bacteria into hospitals. We developed a mathematical model that combines a deterministic model for within-hospital spread of pathogens, discharge to the community and readmission, with a hospital-community network simulation of patient transfers between hospitals. Model parameters used to create the hospital-community network are obtained from two health insurance datasets from Germany. For parameter values representing transmission of resistant Enterobacteriaceae, we compute estimates for the single admission reproduction numbers RA and the basic reproduction numbers R0 per hospital-community pair. We simulate the spread of colonization through the network of hospitals, and investigate how increasing connectedness of hospitals through the network influences the prevalence in the hospital-community pairs. We find that the prevalence in hospitals is determined by their RA and R0 values. Increasing transfer rates between network nodes tend to lower the overall prevalence in the network by diluting the high prevalence of hospitals with high R0 to hospitals where persistent spread is not possible. We conclude that hospitals with high reproduction numbers represent a continuous source of risk for importing resistant pathogens for hospitals with otherwise low levels of transmission. Moreover, high risk hospital-community nodes act as reservoirs of pathogens in a densely connected network.Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of anti-tumor necrosis factor agents (anti-TNFs) has received extensive attention due to its potential for improving treatment outcomes in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. However, the benefits of applying TDM in clinical practice remain largely unclear due to a lack of evidence from the available prospective randomized controlled studies. The questionable evidence for TDM obtained in these studies can be caused by several design suboptimalities, including long turnaround times of sample analysis, use of inappropriate exposure targets, insufficiently precise algorithms for dose optimization, and inapt trial designs. In future studies, model-informed precision dosing in combination with rapid testing methods is recommended to maximize the potential of TDM of anti-TNFs.Touchscreen has gained increasing popularity. However, little is known about touchscreen use in vibration environments. This study aimed to examine the effects of control-to-display gain (GAIN) and operation precision requirement on touchscreen operations in varied vibration environments. Twenty participants attended an experiment where they were instructed to perform three types of basic touchscreen operation tasks in static, low vibration, and high vibration environments, respectively. Five GAINs (0.75, 1, 2, 3 and 4) and three operation precision requirements (90%, 95%, and 99%) were examined. The results indicated that vibration exerted adverse effects on task performance, and increased perceived workload, perceived task difficulty and discomfort. Task completion time showed a U-shaped curve as GAIN increased. Lowering operation precision requirement improved task performance and reduced perceived workload, especially in vibration environments and at larger GAINs. The findings provide practical implications on the design of usable touchscreen interfaces in vibration environments.This paper investigates whether spring-foam technology in an aircraft seat-pan can reduce weight and at the same time provide equal or better comfort. Firstly, through literature studies and using an iterative design process a prototype seat-pan was designed and developed using spring-foam technology. The (dis)comfort of this seat was compared with a standard aircraft seat-pan. Twenty two participants were asked to sit in each seat for 90 min, completing a questionnaire every 15 min. At the end of each seating session pressure map recordings were made of the seat-pans. The results showed that the prototype seat-pan has on average a significantly higher comfort for the first 30 min and at a 60 min recording than the standard seat-pan. The discomfort and long term comfort were not significantly influenced. The pressure distribution on the prototype seat-pan was significantly closer to an ideal pressure distribution than a conventional seat-pan. In addition, the prototype seat-pan had a significantly larger contact area and lower average pressure. The seat-cushion weighs 20% less than the conventional seat-cushion. The study indicates that a seat-pan design using spring-foam technology can be lighter and more comfortable than conventional foam cushion materials. It is recommended to optimize the prototype seat further and conduct long term (dis)comfort studies with a broader variation in subjects' age.BPA is chemical pollutant of very high concern due to its toxicity to the environment and risks for human health. Environmental concern consists in BPA entrance into aquatic ecosystems due to acute and chronic toxicity to invertebrates and vertebrates. This study aimed to determine acute BPA toxicity to tropical estuarine-marine species of four trophic levels and integrate BPA toxicity values using species sensitivity distribution (SSD) analysis. Our hypothesis is that BPA toxicity increases towards higher trophic levels. Microalga (Tetraselmis sp.), zooplanktonic grazer (Artemia salina), deposit-feeder invertebrate (Heleobia australis), and omnivorous fish (Poecilia vivipara) were chosen as experimental models. Tetraselmis sp. showed the highest BPA tolerance, without a concentration-dependent response. Species sensitivity have increased from A. salina (LC50,96h = 107.2 mg L-1), followed by H. australis (LC50,96h = 11.53.5 mg L-1), to P. vivipara (LC50,96h = 3.5 mg L-1). Despite the toxicity hierarchy towards trophic levels, which partially supported our hypothesis, SSD did not evidence a clear pattern among estuarine-marine trophic groups. Our study disclosed the sensitivity of not yet investigated species to BPA and, in an integrative way, highlighted BPA toxic effects at different trophic levels. Although estimated acute hazardous concentration (HC5 = 1.18 mg L-1) for estuarine and marine species was higher than environmentally relevant concentrations, sublethal adverse effects induced by BPA exposure may lead to unbalances in population levels and consequently affect the ecological functioning of tropical coastal systems.Phytoremediation coupled with co-cropping is assumed to be good for safety utilization and remediation of heavy metal contaminated farmland, which can ensure farmers' income without increasing health risks for human. In this study, the effects on plant cadmium (Cd) accumulation and health risk of consuming the vegetable plant were compared between monoculture and co-cropping of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea) with two ecotypes of Sedum alfredii in a moderately (0.82 mg kg-1) Cd contaminated greenhouse vegetable field. The results showed that co-cropping with S. alfredii raised Cd concentration in edible part of cauliflower with slightly growth promotion. The health risk of consuming cauliflower to different groups of people have been evaluated by calculating Hazard Quotient (HQ) and all HQ value were less than 1.0, which indicated that eating co-cropped cauliflower would not cause health risks to adults and children. Besides, the Cd concentration of hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) of S. alfredii was 27.3 mg kg-1 in monoculture and it increased to 51.
