Stable cyclic peroxides demonstrated cytotoxic activity against cancer cells, besides a mechanism of cytotoxic action was proposed. In terms of safety, the overall accepted safety profile was considered manageable. © AlphaMed Press 2020.OBJECTIVE To characterize cancer diagnosis in Scottish primary care and draw comparisons with cancer diagnostic activity in England. link2 METHOD A national audit of cancer diagnosis was conducted in Scottish and English general practices. link2 Participating GPs collected diagnostic pathway data on patients diagnosed in 2014 from medical records. Data were supplemented by linkage to national cancer registries. Analysis explored and compared patient characteristics, diagnostic intervals, and routes to diagnosis. RESULTS 7.7% of all Scottish general practices in 2017 provided data on 2,014 cancer diagnoses. 71.5% of cases presented to GPs and 37.4% were referred using the "Urgent-Suspected Cancer" route. The median primary care interval was 5 days (IQR 0-23 days) and median diagnostic interval was 30 days (IQR 13-68). Both varied by cancer-site. Diagnostic intervals were longer in the most remote patients and those with more comorbidities. Scottish and English samples corresponded closely in key characteristics. CONCLUSIONS Most people diagnosed with cancer in Scotland present to a GP first. Most are referred and diagnosed quickly, with variations by cancer-site. Intervals were longest for the most remote patients. GPs in Scotland and England appear to perform equally but, in view of growing differences between health systems, future comparative audits may be informative. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.A recent outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in China has claimed the lives of millions of pigs, and although this virus has no health impacts on humans, the disruption of the global pig population has far-reaching negative impacts on economic and pork-derived products, including the creation of the critical drug heparin. The active pharmaceutical ingredient in heparin is derived from pig intestines, and because of the ASF outbreak, the U.S. faces an imminent shortage of heparin. This drug shortage has the potential for profound implications, as heparin is used in a substantial and varied number of medical conditions. In response to notification of the heparin shortage crisis, our institution, Massachusetts General Hospital, activated its Hospital Incident Command System to streamline organization of major stakeholders and oversee operational and clinical activities required to mitigate the potential risks and optimize alternative effective strategies. This article describes the essential elements of our inpart in the decision-making process, and frequently updated. Furthermore, the response system was dynamic, accessible, and one in which challenges were recognized and acted upon. The key to any crisis management is respect for one another and constant and open communication. Heparin is such a widespread drug that this shortage can potentially affect every patient population and provider. Understanding one's institutional needs and the effect of this crisis on those needs is one of the first steps when developing a strategic plan. Continually evaluating and adjusting that approach in response to the needs of the institution are critical to its success. KGaA, Weinheim.Persons with mental health problems and/or substance addictions (MHPSA) are stigmatised more than persons with physical conditions. This includes stigmatisation by care professionals. Stigma is considered one of the most important barriers for recovery from these conditions. There is an ongoing debate that use of language can exacerbate or diminish stigmatisation. Therefore, we conducted an experiment examining how four different ways of referring to a person with (a) alcohol addiction, (b) drug addiction, (c) depression and (d) schizophrenia are related to stigmatising attitudes by care professionals in the Netherlands. We partially replicated two studies performed in the United States and used surveys with vignettes containing either 'disorder-first', 'person-first', 'victim' and 'recovery' language, which were randomly assigned to participants (n = 361). No significant differences between language conditions were found for any of the vignettes. Our findings suggest that subtle differences in language to refer to persons with mental health problems or substance addictions have no effect on stigmatising attitudes by care professionals in the Netherlands. Herein, we report that discrete hafnium metal-oxo cluster [Hf18 O10 (OH)26 (SO4 )13 ⋅(H2 O)33 ] (Hf18 ), which is centred by the same hexamer motif found in many MOFs, acts as a heterogeneous catalyst for the efficient hydrolysis of horse heart myoglobin (HHM) in low buffer concentrations. Among 154 amino acids present in the sequence of HHM, strictly selective cleavage at only 6 solvent accessible aspartate residues was observed. Mechanistic experiments suggest that the hydrolytic activity is likely derived from the actuation of HfIV Lewis acidic sites and the Brønsted acidic surface of Hf18 . X-ray scattering and ESI-MS revealed that Hf18 is completely insoluble in these conditions, confirming the HHM hydrolysis is caused by a heterogeneous reaction of the solid Hf18 cluster, and not from smaller, soluble Hf species that could leach into solution. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. However, AIE denominates only the phenomenon, while the details of its underlying guiding principles remain to be elucidated. link3 This mini review discusses the basic principles of AIE based on our previous mechanistic study on the photophysical behavior of 9,10-bis( N , N -dialkylamino)anthracene ( BDAA ) and the corresponding mechanistic analysis by quantum chemical calculations. link3 BDAA comprises of an anthracene core and small electron donors, which allows discussing the quantum-chemical aspects of AIE. The key factor for AIE is the control over the non-radiative decay (deactivation) pathway, which can be visualized by considering the conical intersection (CI) on a potential energy surface. Controlling the conical intersection (CI) on the potential energy surface enables the separate formation of fluorescent (CIhigh) and non-fluorescent (CIlow) molecules. The novelty and originality of AIE in the field of photochemistry lies in the creation of functionality by design and in the active control over deactivation pathways. KGaA, Weinheim.Neuroimaging has played an important part in advancing our understanding of the neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). At the same time, neuroimaging studies of OCD have had notable limitations, including reliance on relatively small samples. International collaborative efforts to increase statistical power by combining samples from across sites have been bolstered by the ENIGMA consortium; this provides specific technical expertise for conducting multi-site analyses, as well as access to a collaborative community of neuroimaging scientists. In this article, we outline the background to, development of, and initial findings from ENIGMA's OCD working group, which currently consists of 47 samples from 34 institutes in 15 countries on 5 continents, with a total sample of 2,323 OCD patients and 2,325 healthy controls. link3 Initial work has focused on studies of cortical thickness and subcortical volumes, structural connectivity, and brain lateralization in children, adolescents and adults with OCD, also including the study on the commonalities and distinctions across different neurodevelopment disorders.
