This study tested adolescent sexual behavior patterns at age 14, their association with mental health at age 17 (psychological well-being, substance use, and self-harm attempts), and the influence of early life adversities upon this association. A British birth cohort (5,593 boys and 5,724 girls from the Millennium Cohort Study) was used. Latent class analysis suggested five subgroups of adolescent sexual behaviors a "no sexual behavior" (50.74%), a "kisser" (39.92%), a "touching under clothes" (4.71%), a "genital touching" (2.64%), and an "all sexual activities" class (1.99%). Adolescents from the "kisser," "touching under clothes," "genital touching," and "all sexual activities" classes reported significantly more substance use and self-harm attempts compared to adolescents from the "no sexual behavior" group. The associations became weaker after controlling for early life adversities (reducing around 4.38% to 37.35% for boys, and 9.29% to 52.56% for girls), and reduced to a smaller degree after further controlling for mental health variables at 14. The associations between sexual behaviors and psychological well-being became non-significant after controlling for early life adversities. Adolescents who have engaged in low-intensity sexual activities at early age may have poorer reported mental health, a pattern that is stronger for girls and early life adversity may partially explain this association.Spatial analytic approaches are classic models in econometric literature, but relatively new in social sciences. Spatial analysis models are synonymous with social network auto-regressive models which are also gaining popularity in the behavioral sciences. These models have two major benefits. First, dependent data, either socially or spatially, must be accounted for to acquire unbiased results. Second, analysis of the dependence provides rich additional information such as spillover effects. Structural Equation Models (SEM) are widely used in psychological research for measuring and testing multi-faceted constructs. So far, SEM that allow for spatial or social dependency are limited with regard to their flexibility, for example, when estimating nonlinear effects. Here, we provide a cohesive framework which can simultaneously estimate latent interaction/polynomial effects and account for spatial effects with both exogenous and endogenous latent variables, the Bayesian Spatial Auto-Regressive Structural Equation Model (BARDSEM). First, we briefly outline classic auto-regressive models. Next, we present the BARDSEM and introduce simulation results to exemplify its performance. Finally, we provide an empirical example using the spatially dependent extended US southern homicide data to show the rich interpretations that are possible using the BARDSEM. Finally, we discuss implications, limitations, and future research.Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome is a rare but severe complication of carotid artery stenting or carotid endarterectomy. Staged angioplasty is reportedly an effective strategy to avoid cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome. We encountered a case of internal carotid artery stenosis with a rare clinical presentation of limb shaking that was successfully improved by staged angioplasty. To our knowledge, there are no reported cases of limb shaking treated with staged angioplasty.A 76-year-old woman presented with continuous chorea in her left lower limb and shoulder. Medical examination revealed a tiny cerebral infarction in the right corona radiata and severe right internal carotid artery stenosis. Angiography showed near occlusion of the right internal carotid artery. Staged angioplasty was performed to avoid the risk of cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome. The first angioplasty resulted in an expanded diameter of 2.5 mm and was followed by definitive carotid artery stenting using a closed-cell stent 3.5 weeks later. Limb shaking improved in a stepwise manner along with an improvement in internal carotid artery stenosis and distal flow state with no signs of cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome. Patients with internal carotid artery stenosis or occlusion presenting with limb shaking have been suggested to have impaired cerebrovascular reactivity, which is also thought to be a risk factor for cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome. The stepwise improvement in limb shaking observed in this case supports the idea that the pathophysiology of limb shaking is related to cerebral haemodynamic impairment. Measures to prevent cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome, including staged angioplasty, should be actively considered in patients with limb shaking because the symptoms themselves suggest severe hypoperfusion.
Hippocampal involvement may differ between multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).

To investigate the morphometric, diffusion and functional alterations in hippocampus in MS and NMOSD and the clinical significance.

A total of 752 participants including 236 MS, 236 NMOSD and 280 healthy controls (HC) were included in this retrospective multi-center study. The hippocampus and subfield volumes, fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD), amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and degree centrality (DC) were analyzed, and their associations with clinical variables were investigated.

The hippocampus showed significantly lower volume, FA and greater MD in MS compared to NMOSD and HC (
< 0.05), while no abnormal ALFF or DC was identified in any group. Hippocampal subfields were affected in both diseases, though subiculum, presubiculum and fimbria showed significantly lower volume only in MS (
< 0.05). Significant correlations between diffusion alterations, several subfield volumes and clinical variables were observed in both diseases, especially in MS (
= -0.444 to 0.498,
< 0.05). FA and MD showed fair discriminative power between MS and HC, NMOSD and HC (AUC > 0.7).

The present study characterized cowpea (CP) and mung bean (MB) root exudates and examined their influences on the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by the two oil degraders Micrococcus luteus WN01 and Bacillus cereus W2301. The effects of root exudates on soil microbial population dynamic and their enzymes dehydrogenase (DHA), and catechol 2,3 dioxygenase (C23O) activities were assessed. Both root exudates enhanced the degradation by both oil degraders. Cowpea root exudates maximized the removal of TPHs and PAHs by M. luteus WN01. Selleck SR-4370 Both bacterial population and DHA increased significantly in the presence of both root exudates. However, the C23O activities were significantly higher in WN01 treated. No significant influence of root exudates was observed on the C23O activities of W2301 treated. By using gas chromatography -mass spectroscopy, the dominant compounds found in cowpea and mung bean root exudates were 4-methoxy-cinnamic acid and terephthalic acid. Found in lower amount were propionic, malonic acid, and citric acid which were associated with enhanced PAHs desorption from soil and subsequent degradation. Novelty statement This is the first study to characterize the low molecular weight organic acids from root exudates of cowpea and mung bean and their influences on hydrocarbon desorption and hence enhancing the biodegradation process. The findings of the present study will greatly contribute to a better understanding of plant-microbe interaction in total petroleum hydrocarbons contaminated soil.
The Intensive care unit (ICU) Requirement Score (IRS) has been defined as identifying poisoned patients on hospital admission who do not require ICU referral, in an effort to reduce health expenses. However, this score has been poorly validated. We aimed to evaluate the IRS in a large cohort of poisoned patients.

We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study. IRS was calculated using clinical parameters obtained on admission including age, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, Glasgow coma score, intoxication type, co-morbidities (i.e., arrhythmia, cirrhosis, and respiratory insufficiency), and the combination of the intoxication with another reason for ICU admission. We evaluated the ability of IRS < 6 determined on admission to predict the lack of need for ICU treatment, defined as the need for mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, and/or renal replacement therapy in the first 24 h post-admission and/or death during the hospital stay. This score was compared to the usual prognostic scores, itrate the excellent negative predictive value of the IRS, allowing the exclusion of ICU requirements for poisoned patients with IRS less then 6. IRS usefulness should be confirmed based on a prospective multicenter cohort study before extensive routine use.The aim of this review was to determine the range of outcomes reported in long-term follow-up studies of children and adolescents with chronic pain. Using a scoping review methodology, a systematic search for studies reporting outcomes in children and adolescents with chronic pain over a ≥12 month period was undertaken. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they included children and adolescents (≤18 years old on study enrolment) with chronic pain, and outcomes were followed up for ≥12 months. Overall, 42 studies investigating more than 24,132 children were included in the review. Studies assessed a total of 187 unique outcome measures within the broader measures of pain (38 studies; 90%), function (33 studies; 79%) and other (21 studies; 50%). Unidimensional assessments of the severity or presence of pain and global assessments of function were the most commonly reported outcome measures. The number of study follow-up points ranged from 1 to 5, with mode duration of follow-up 12 months post intervention (25 studies; 60%; range 1-13 years). Overall, we identified a wide range of reported outcome measures in studies of children with chronic pain. Beyond assessments of pain intensity and global function, there is little consistency, and reporting of developmental outcome measures is poor. Further long-term outcome research in this population is needed.1. The objective of this study was to investigate wheat genotypes bred for increased intrinsic phytase activity for InsP6 disappearance and the formation of lower inositol phosphates in such wheat-fed broiler chickens. The influence of monocalcium phosphate (MCP) supplementation on these characteristics and the utilisation of P and Ca were also determined. A three-step in vitro assay and a broiler trial were performed.2. In the 63 wheat genotypes tested in vitro, phytase activity varied from 1900 FTU/kg to 5200 FTU/kg, and InsP6 disappearance increased with higher phytase activity of wheat in a linear manner. The addition of MCP significantly reduced in vitro InsP6 disappearance by one-third, independent of the inclusion level of wheat in the feed. When exogenous phytase was added to wheat, in vitro InsP6 disappearance increased independently of the phytase activity of the wheat used.3. In the broiler trial, four wheat genotypes with phytase activities between 2400 and 3700 FTU/kg were included at 400 g/kg in diets with and without MCP.
