Metabolic syndrome (MetS, i.e., type 2 diabetes and obesity) is often associated with dysbiosis, inflammation, and leaky gut syndrome, which increase the content of oxygen and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Using near-infrared fluorescent, in situ imaging of ROS, we evaluated the effects of oral administration of elemental iron powder (Fe0) on luminal ROS in the GI tract and related these changes to glucose metabolism and the gut microbiome. C57Bl/6J mice fed low-fat or high-fat diets and gavaged with Fe0 (2.5 g per kg), in both single- and repeat-doses, demonstrated decreased levels of luminal ROS. Fourteen days of repeated Fe0 administration reduced hyperglycemia and improved glucose tolerance in the obese and hyperglycemic animals compared to the untreated obese controls and reduced the relative amount of iron oxides in the feces, which indicated an increased redox environment of the GI tract. We determined that Fe0 administration can also be used as a diagnostic assay to assess the GI microenvironment. Improved metabolic outcomes and decreased gastrointestinal ROS in Fe0-treated, high-fat diet-fed animals correlated with the increase in a co-abundance group of beneficial bacteria, including Lactobacillus, and the suppression of detrimental populations, including Oscillibacter, Peptococcus, and Intestinimonas. Daily Fe0 treatment also increased the relative abundance of amplicon sequence variants that lacked functional enzymatic antioxidant systems, which is consistent with the ability of Fe0 to scavenge ROS and oxygen in the GI, thus favoring the growth of oxygen-sensitive bacteria. These findings delineate a functional role for antioxidants in modification of the GI microenvironment and subsequent reversal of metabolic dysfunction.Species trees that can generate a nonmatching gene tree topology that is more probable than the topology matching the species tree are said to be in an anomaly zone. We introduce some heuristic approaches to infer whether species trees are in anomaly zones when it is difficult or impossible to compute the entire distribution of gene tree topologies. Here, probabilities of unrooted, unranked, and ranked gene tree topologies under the multispecies coalescent are used. A ranked tree can be viewed as an unranked tree with a temporal ordering of its internal nodes. Overall, considering probabilities of unrooted or unranked gene tree topologies within one nearest neighbor interchange from the species tree topology is a reasonable heuristic to infer the existence of anomalous unrooted or unranked gene trees, respectively. We investigated a test proposed by Linkem et al. (2016) which classifies a species tree as being in an unranked anomaly zone if there is a subset of four taxa in an unranked anomaly zone. We find this test to have high true positive rates, but it can also have high false positive rates. For ranked trees, because at least one of the most probable ranked gene tree topologies must have the same unranked topology as the species tree, we propose to use only those ranked gene trees that have topologies that match the unranked species tree topology. We find that the probability that the species tree is in unrooted and unranked anomaly zones tends to increase with the speciation rate, and the probability of all three types of anomaly zones increases rapidly with the number of taxa. We find that probabilities that species trees are in an anomaly zone can be quite high for moderately high speciation rates.Mobilids are among the most taxonomically diverse but morphologically uniform groups of epibiotic ciliates. We investigated the diversity, species boundaries, and phylogenetic relationships of mobilids associated with freshwater planarians, using 114 new sequences of two mitochondrial (16S rRNA gene and cytochrome c oxidase gene) and five nuclear (18S rRNA gene, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region, D1/D2 domains of 28S rRNA gene) markers. Although the morphological disparity of the isolated trichodinids and urceolariids was low, Bayesian coalescent analyses revealed the existence of five distinct evolutionary lineages/species given the seven molecular markers. The occurrence of mobilids perfectly correlated with their planarian hosts Trichodina steinii and two Urceolaria mitra-like taxa were associated exclusively with the planarian Dugesia gonocephala, Trichodina polycelis sp. n. with the planarian Polycelis felina, and Trichodina schmidtea sp. n. with the planarian Schmidtea polychroa. Host organisms thus very likely constitute sharply isolated niches that might permit speciation of their epibiotic ciliates, even though no distinct morphological features appear to be recognizable among ciliates originating from different hosts.Atlantic Forest Inselbergs (AFI) and Campos Rupestres (CR) are mountains and highlands of eastern South America, relatively poorly studied and highly threatened, which display extraordinary levels of plant endemism and richness. In spite of their geographical and environmental differences, the origin of the flora of CR and AFI are likely linked to each other, because several plant clades are distributed across both ecosystems. In addition to these studies, little has been investigated about the historical biogeographical connections between AFI and CR and most evolutionary studies are restricted to CR. GW788388 Barbacenia (Velloziaceae) is widely spread and nearly endemic to the AFI and CR outcrops and thus represent an ideal system to study the biogeographical connections between CR and AFI. Besides, given the remarkable diversity of Barbacenia in CR compared to AFI, it appears that different factors were important drivers in the diversification of Barbacenia lineages, likely leading to different patterns of morpholooss mountaintops in interplay with paleovegetation dynamics during the global Miocene cooling and Pleistocene climatic oscillations may played an important role in the range expansion of modern AFI Barbacenia lineages. Finally, our results also showed a significant differences in morphological diversity between AFI and CR clades, suggesting a long-term morphological stasis in AFI species.

The Canadian Spine Outcome Research Network registry was queried for all patients receiving surgery for degenerative thoracolumbar spine disease. Exclusion criteria were trauma, tumor, infection, and previous spine surgery. SF12 Mental Component Scores (MCS) were compared between those with and without significant improvement but may improve with well-planned spine surgery.
Large scale, real world, registry data suggests that successful surgery for degenerative lumbar disease is associated with reduction in the prevalence of major depression regardless of the specific underlaying diagnosis. Worse baseline MCS was associated with worse baseline HRQOL and improved postoperatively with coincident improvement in disability, emphasizing that mental wellness is not a static state but may improve with well-planned spine surgery.
Possible mechanisms of left-axis deviation (LAD) in the setting of left bundle branch block (LBBB) include differences in cardiac electrophysiology, structure, or anatomic axis.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the mechanism(s) responsible for LAD in patients with LBBB.

Twenty-nine patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathies and LBBB underwent noninvasive electrocardiographic imaging (ECGi), cardiac computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging in order to define ventricular electrical activation, characterize cardiac structure, and determine the cardiac anatomic axis.

Sixteen patients had a normal QRS axis (NA) (mean axis 8° ± 23°), whereas 13 patients had LAD (mean axis -48° ± 13°; P <.001). Total activation times were longer in the LAD group (112 ± 25 ms vs 91 ± 14 ms; P = .01) due to delayed activation of the basal anterolateral region (107 ± 10 ms vs 81 ± 17 ms; P<.001). Left ventricular (LV) activation in patients with LAD was from apex to base, in contrast to a circumferential pattern of activation in patients with NA. Apex-to-base delay was longer in the LA group (95 ± 13 ms vs 64 ± 21 ms; P <.001) and correlated with QRS frontal axis (R
= 0.67; P <.001). Both groups were comparable with regard to LV end-diastolic volume (295 ± 84 mL vs LAD 310 ± 91 mL; P = .69), LV mass (177 ± 33 g vs LAD 180 ± 37 g; P= .83), and anatomic axis.

Understanding of the status and mechanisms underlying the insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae species is necessary for success of vector control efforts. The study aimed to determine the molecular forms of An. gambiae from four districts in Sierra Leone during May and June 2018, and the level of N1575Y mutation. The molecular form identification of adult female An. gambiae mosquitoes reared from larvae were carried out using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. And the N1575Y mutations were detected using SNaPshot and sequencing. As a result, significant differences were found in the distribution of An. gambiae molecular forms among regions (P less then 0.001). And a total of 638 An. gambiae sensu stricto, 106 An. coluzzi, and 4 hybrid individuals were identified. Moreover, the overall N1575Y mutation frequency was 10.2% with no statistical difference among regions (χ2 = 3.009, P = 0.390). In addition, no significant differences in N1575Y mutation frequency were found among different An. gambiae molecular forms (P = 0.383). In conclusion, the N1575Y mutation in An. gambiae populations in Sierra Leone was reported for the first time in the present study. It provides key evidence for the necessity of monitoring vector susceptibility levels to insecticides used in this country.
We investigated whether preoperative clinical parameters predict diabetes remission and relapse after conventional gastrectomy for cancer and whether postoperative weight changes influence diabetes remission and relapse.

This study included 5,150 patients with diabetes who underwent gastrectomy for cancer from 2004 to 2014. Diabetes remission was defined in 3 ways, according to postoperative antidiabetic medication and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels. Diabetes relapse was defined as reinitiating antidiabetic medication among patients in diabetes remission.

Six predictors (higher body mass index [BMI], total gastrectomy, younger age, FPG levels, number of oral hypoglycemic agents [OHAs], and no insulin use) of diabetes remission increased the likelihood of remission by >13-fold (odds ratio [OR], 13.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 8.65‒19.11).
