Participants were classified at baseline in three categories of fall risk (low, moderate, severe) using a modified algorithm from the Center for Disease Control's STEADI (Stop Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries) and fall risk from data from the longitudinal NHATS. Impaired global cognition was defined as NHATS-derived impairment in either the Alzheimer's Disease-8 score, immediate/delayed recall, orientation, clock-drawing test, or date/person recall. The primary outcome was the first incident of cognitive impairment in an 8 year follow-up period. Cox-proportional hazard models ascertained time to onset of cognitive impairment (referent = low modified STEADI incidence).

Of the 7,146 participants (57.8% female), the median age category was 75 to 80 years. Prevalence of baseline fall modified STEADI risk categories in participants was low (51.6%), medium (38.5%), and high (9.9%). In our fully adjusted model, the risk of developing cognitive impairment was hazard ratio (HR) 1.18 [95% CI = 1.08, 1.29] in the moderate risk category, and HR 1.74 [95% CI = 1.53, 1.98] in the high-risk category.

Domain III is found to be the aptamer-binding domain although no specific aptamer conformation is captured. However, in all cases, the aptamer utilizes the 3'-end to attach on an albumin surface. Nationally representative cross-sectional survey of adults in England conducted between January 2009 and July 2019.

A total of 219 720 adults.

All participants reported their current smoking status and socio-demographic characteristics (i.e. age, gender, home ownership, social grade and ethnicity). Smokers reported motivation to quit, urges to smoke and the Heaviness of Smoking Index (HIS). Weighted prevalence statistics were calculated. Multinomial regression and logistic regression were used to assess differences in smoking characteristics among smokers and socio-demographic characteristics relative to non-smokers.

The prevalence of smoking between January 2009 and July 2019 was highest among those aged 21-30. In 2019, 15.6% [95% confidence interval (CI)=12.8-18.8%] of 18-20-year-olds reported smoking, which is estimated to represent 364 000 individuals in England. Relative to smokers aged 18-20, older smokers (aged 21+) had a higher motivation to quit smoking [odds ratios (ORs)=1.40-1.45 range] and higher nicotine dependency as measured by urges to smoke (ORs=1.06-1.24 range) and HSI (ORs=1.05-2.85 range). Compared with non-smokers aged 18-20, smokers in this age group had lower odds of being female (OR=0.89) and higher odds of being of white ethnicity (OR=2.78) and from social grades C1-E (lower social grades) compared with AB (higher social grades) (OR=1.19-1.83 range).

Blume extract (LRE), while its antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities were evaluated and its action mechanism was further explored. With the cofermentation of LRE, the yogurt showed the fine quality characteristics, including pH, titratable acidity, texture, syneresis susceptibility, color, microbiological content, and chemical composition. Meanwhile, the yogurt exhibited the remarkable antioxidant capability to enhance the activities of antioxidant enzymes and reduce the malondialdehyde level in animal serums. In addition, the yogurt showed the obvious hypoglycemic activity to inhibit the decrease of glucose tolerance and the increase of postprandial hyperglycemia of diabetes mice. Furthermore, using the analysis of molecular docking, the main compounds of LRE could combine tightly with α-amylase and α-glucosidase by hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction, so as to change their spatial structure and inhibit their biocatalytic activity in glucose metabolism. All present results suggested that LRE showed the potential value to be used as supplement to enhance the quality and functions of yogurt in food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION The hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities of a functional yogurt cofermented with LRE were found and its relative action mechanism was also explored. This work provide the experimental and theoretical basis for the application of this yogurt as nutraceuticals to protect human health in food industry.
Metastasis is the leading cause of recurrence in gastric cancer. However, the imaging techniques and pathological examinations for tumor metastasis have a high false-positive rate or a high false-negative rate, and many proposed that metastasis-related molecular biomarkers can hardly be validated in independent datasets.

We propose to use significantly stable gene pairs with reversal relative expression orderings (REOs) between non-metastasis and metastasis gastric cancer samples as the metastasis-related gene pairs. Based on the REOs of these gene pairs, we developed a qualitative transcriptional signature for predicting the recurrence risk of stages II-III gastric cancer patients after surgical resection.

A REOs-based signature, consisting of 19 gene pairs (19-GPS), was selected from 77 stages II-III gastric cancer patients and validated in two independent datasets. Samples in the high-risk group had shorter disease-free survival time and overall survival time than those in the low-risk group. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the high- and low-risk groups classified by 19-GPS were highly reproducible comparing with those between lymph node metastasis and lymph node non-metastasis groups. Functional enrichment analysis showed that these DEGs were significantly enriched in metastasis-related pathways, such as PI3K-Akt and Rap1 signaling pathways. The multi-omics analyses suggested that the epigenetic and genomic features might cause transcriptional differences between two subgroups, which help to characterize the mechanism of gastric cancer metastasis.

The signature could robustly identify patients at high recurrence risk after resection surgery, and the multi-omics analyses might aid in revealing the metastasis-related characteristics of gastric cancer.
