Free-hand pedicle screw insertion methods are widely used for screw insertion during scoliosis surgery. Preoperative knowledge about the pedicle size helps to maximize screw containment and minimize the risk of pedicle breach. The criterion validity and reliability of preoperative EOS images for pedicle size measurements in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS) was investigated in this study.

Sixteen patients who underwent surgical treatment for IS were prospectively included. Intra- and extracortical pedicle height and width measurements on EOS images were compared with reconstructed intra-operative 3D images of the isthmus of included pedicles. Secondly, intra- and interobserver reliability of pedicle size measurements on EOS images was determined.

Fgf23 gene expression was determined by qRT-PCR and FGF23 protein by ELISA in UMR106 osteoblast-like cells. UMR106 cells expressed activin receptor type 2A and B. Myostatin upregulated Fgf23 gene expression and protein production. The myostatin effect on Fgf23 was significantly attenuated by TGF-βRI inhibitor SB431542, p38MAPK inhibitor SB202190, and NFκB inhibitor withaferin A. Moreover, SOCE inhibitor 2-APB blunted the myostatin effect on Fgf23. Taken together, myostatin is a stimulator of Fgf23 expression in UMR106 cells, an effect at least partially mediated by downstream TGF-βRI/p38MAPK signaling as well as NFκB-dependent SOCE.
Infectious complications are as high as 30% in elective colorectal surgery. In recent years, several studies have discussed the topic of preoperative bowel decontamination prior to colorectal surgery in order to reduce postoperative infectious complications and have found significant effects of oral antibiotic administration with a large variety of drugs used. No study has evaluated the combination of oral paromomycin and metronidazole in this context.

We performed a prospective single-center study with a matched-pair retrospective cohort to evaluate postoperative infectious complications (superficial site infections, organ space abscess, anastomotic leakage) in elective colorectal surgery.

A total of 120 patients were available for study inclusion; 101 gave informed consent and were included. A total of 92 patients were matched and subsequently analyzed. We could show a reduction in overall infectious complications in the intervention group (15.2% vs 30.8%, p = 0.018; odds ratio 0.333, 95% CI 0.142-0.784) as well as a reduction in superficial surgical site infections (8.7 vs 19.6%, p = 0.041, OR 0.333, 95% CI 0.121-0.917). The frequency of the other infectious complications such as intraabdominal abscesses and anastomotic leakage showed a tendency towards decreased frequencies in the intervention group (OR 0.714, 95% CI 0.235-2.169 and OR 0.571; 95% CI 0.167-1.952, respectively). Finally, the oral antibiotic administration led to an almost significantly reduced length of stay (12.24 days vs 15.25 days; p = 0.057).

One such mechanism is the permeability transition of the mitochondrial inner membrane. In mammals, ischemia-reperfusion events or viral diseases may induce ionic disturbances, such as calcium overload; this cation enters the mitochondria, thereby triggering the permeability transition. This phenomenon increases inner membrane permeability, affects transmembrane potential, promotes mitochondrial swelling, and induces apoptosis. Previous studies have found that the mitochondria of some crustaceans do not exhibit a calcium-regulated permeability transition. However, in the whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei, contradictory evidence has prevented this phenomenon from being confirmed or rejected. Both the ability of L. vannamei mitochondria to take up large quantities of calcium through a putative mitochondrial calcium uniporter with conserved characteristics and permeability transition were investigated in this study by determining mitochondrial responses to cations overload. By measuring mitochondrial swelling and transmembrane potential, we investigated whether shrimp exposure to hypoxia-reoxygenation events or viral diseases may induce mitochondrial permeability transition. The results of this study demonstrate that shrimp mitochondria take up large quantities of calcium through a canonical mitochondrial calcium uniporter. Neither calcium nor other ions were observed to promote permeability transition. This phenomenon does not depend on the life cycle stage of shrimp, and it is not induced during hypoxia/reoxygenation events or in the presence of viral diseases. The absence of the permeability transition phenomenon and its adaptive meaning are discussed as a loss with biological advantages, possibly enabling organisms to survive under harsh environmental conditions.The impact of drug-coated balloon (DCB) on hemodialysis (HD) patients with coronary lesions remains unclear. This study aimed to compare outcomes after DCB treatment between HD and non-HD patients with de novo coronary lesions. A total of 235 consecutive patients who electively underwent DCB treatment for de novo coronary lesions were included (HD group n = 100; non-HD group n = 135). Angiographic follow-up was performed 6 months after the procedure. Patients were clinically followed up for 2 years. The incidence rates of target lesion revascularization (TLR) and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were investigated. Diabetes and a history of coronary bypass grafting were more frequent in the HD group than in the non-HD group (69.0% vs. 50.7%, p = 0.007, and 24.0% vs 9.1%, p = 0.013, respectively). The reference diameter and pre-procedural diameter stenosis were greater in the HD group than in the non-HD group (2.49 mm vs. 2.24 mm, p = 0.007, and 65.9% vs. 59.6%, p = 0.015, respectively).
