Beyond Tevfik Arif, former US President Donald Trump made many efforts to maintain a close connection with Kazakhstan. Trump was criticized for his treatment of a country that has a questionable administration as an all-weather ally.

Tokayev is an entrepreneur who has built connections to the West and with neighbouring countries. To maintain his popularity, he has been careful not to anger Putin. Kazykhanov might disturb that balance. Washington should pay attention to developments happening in Kazakhstan. They foretell many power transition scenarios which could be either good or negative as the conflict continues in Ukraine.
