However, we found significant differences between the female-dominated and the male-dominated sectors in all the mentioned variables. Some limitations and implications of the study are discussed. The data and materials for this research are available at the Open Science Framework, https//osf.io/kptca/.In this pilot program of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for the screening of lung cancer (LC) in a targeted population of people with HIV (PWH), its prevalence was 3.6%; the number needed to screen in order to detect one case of lung cancer was 28, clearly outweighing the risks associated with lung cancer screening. While data from additional cohorts with longitudinal measurements are needed, PWH are a target population for lung cancer screening with LDCT.Early life stress (ELS) is an important risk factor for the development of depression. Impairments in reward learning and feedback sensitivity are suggested to be an intermediate phenotype in depression aetiology therefore we hypothesised that healthy adults with a history of ELS would exhibit reward processing deficits independent of any current depressive symptoms. We recruited 64 adults with high levels of ELS and no diagnosis of a current mental health disorder and 65 controls. Participants completed the probabilistic reversal learning task and probabilistic reward task followed by depression, anhedonia, social status, and stress scales. Participants with high levels of ELS showed decreased positive feedback sensitivity in the probabilistic reversal learning task compared to controls. High ELS participants also trended towards possessing a decreased model-free learning rate. This was coupled with a decreased learning ability in the acquisition phase of block 1 following the practice session. Neither group showed a reward induced response bias in the probabilistic reward task however high ELS participants exhibited decreased stimuli discrimination. Overall, these data suggest that healthy participants without a current mental health diagnosis but with high levels of ELS show deficits in positive feedback sensitivity and reward learning in the probabilistic reversal learning task that are distinct from depressed patients. These deficits may be relevant to increased depression vulnerability.Conferences are ideal platforms for studying gender gaps in science because they are important cultural events that reflect barriers to women in academia. Here, we explored women's participation in ecology conferences by analyzing female representation, behavior, and personal experience at the 1st Meeting of the Iberian Society of Ecology (SIBECOL). The conference had 722 attendees, 576 contributions, and 27 scientific sessions. The gender of attendees and presenters was balanced (48/52% women/men), yet only 29% of the contributions had a woman as last author. Moreover, men presented most of the keynote talks (67%) and convened most of the sessions. Our results also showed that only 32% of the questions were asked by women, yet the number of questions raised by women increased when the speaker or the convener was a woman. Finally, the post-conference survey revealed that attendees had a good experience and did not perceive the event as a threatening context for women. Yet, differences in the responses between genders suggest that women tended to have a worse experience than their male counterparts. Although our results showed clear gender biases, most of the participants of the conference failed to detect it. Overall, we highlight the challenge of increasing women's scientific leadership, visibility and interaction in scientific conferences and we suggest several recommendations for creating inclusive meetings, thereby promoting equal opportunities for all participants.
Hepatitis B and C are endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, with prevalence among the highest in the World. However, several challenges impede the progression towards the elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030 as suggested by the World Health Organization Global health sector strategy on viral hepatitis, including the lack of knowledge on the scale of this epidemic in the region. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis B and C among female sex workers (FSW) in Togo.

This ancillary study from a national cross-sectional bio-behavioral study was conducted in 2017 using a respondent-driven sampling (RDS) method, in eight towns of Togo among FSW. Socio-demographic, behavioral and sexual characteristics were assessed using a standardized questionnaire. Blood samples were collected for HIV, hepatitis B and C serological testing. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and a logistic regression model.

Out of the 1,036 FSW recruited for this study, biological analyses for viral hepatitis were completed for 769 of them. The median age was 26 years [IQR 22-33] and 49.8% (n = 383) had attained secondary school. The prevalence of hepatitis B was 9.9% [95% CI (7.9-12.2)] and the prevalence of hepatitis C was 5.3% [95% CI (3.9-7.2)]. Higher hepatitis B and C prevalence was associated with recruitment out of Lomé (aOR 6.63; 95%CI 3.51-13.40, p <0.001 and OR 2.82; 95% CI [1.37-5.99]; p<0.001, respectively) and, for hepatitis B, with never using condoms for vaginal intercourse (OR 3.14; 95%CI [1.02-8.71]; p<0.05).

Results from this study reveals high prevalence of hepatitis B and C among FSW in Togo and an opportunity for advocacy toward the introduction of immunizations and treatment in this population.

One striking example are the main biomarkers used to diagnose acute myocardial infarction cardiac troponins. The first methods for determining cardiac troponins (proposed 30 years ago) were characterized by extremely low sensitivity. Therefore, they could only detect large acute myocardial infarctions. These methods were also characterized by low specificity, expressed as a high probability of cross-reactivity with skeletal troponin isoforms, which generated false-positive results in the presence of skeletal myopathies and skeletal muscle lesions. With the introduction of high-sensitivity cardiac troponins into clinical practice, the possibility of early diagnosis and exclusion of acute myocardial infarction by assessing troponin concentrations in the first few hours (from admission to the first hour, second hour, or third hour) has become more specific. Our knowledge about cardiac troponins has changed over the years and promising new medical uses have emerged. This paper reviews current data on the diagnostic value of cardiac troponins, the main methods used for their determination, and their analytical characteristics from historical and modern insights.
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent reverse total shoulder arthroplasty performed for primary glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) with an intact rotator cuff compared with rotator cuff tear arthropathy (CTA).

This was a retrospective review of prospectively collected data including consecutive patients who underwent primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for GHOA or CTA with a minimum of 2-year follow-up. Baseline patient demographics and clinical outcomes including active range of motion, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Single Assessment Numerical Evaluation, and visual analog scale for pain were collected. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of preoperative diagnosis on clinical outcomes.

Patients with a preoperative diagnosis of GHOA demonstrated significantly better postoperative active forward elevation (138.6° versus 127.3°; P < 0.01), external rotation (54.2° vnts treated for CTA.

A detailed retrospective analysis and literature review were conducted for all previously published reports of bilateral simultaneous postoperative endophthalmitis (BSPOE) since 1970. There have been seven (nine including the companion paper, and 1 reported elsewhere) cases of BSPOE after immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) reported over 50 years. Generally, in these cases, the surgical protocol recommended by the International Society of Bilateral Cataract Surgeons (iSBCS) was breached or uncertain. CIL56 mouse Bacterial causes were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3), Staphylococcus epidermidis (3), Burkholderia cepacia complex (1), negative (1) and not determined (1). Visual recovery was light perception, or worse, for Pseudomonas cases, generally good for Staphylococcus and Burkholderia cases, and mixed in cases of unknown etiology. Therefore, BSPOE is rare, and causes vary. Strict adherence to the iSBCS General Principles of Excellence in ISBCS, 2009 surgical protocol and care with operating room consal protocol and care with operating room construction seem to considerably lessen the risk.
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is currently the standard of care for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. In recent years, with the continuous development of immunotherapy, such as chimeric antigen receptor T cells, blinatumomab, and inotuzumab ozogamicin, a series of vital clinical studies have confirmed its high response rate and favorable outcomes for ALL. Although the emergence of immunotherapy has expanded relapsed or refractory (r/r) ALL patients' opportunities to receive allo-HSCT, allo-HSCT is associated with potential challenges. In this review, the role of allo-HSCT in the treatment of adult ALL in the era of immunotherapy will be discussed.

Despite improvements in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, breast cancer is still a leading cause of cancer death for women. Compelling evidence suggests that targeting cancer stem cells (CSCs) have a crucial impact on overcoming the current shortcomings of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the present study, we aimed to study the effects of T cells and a critical anti-tumor cytokine, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), on breast cancer stem cells.

BALB/c mice and BALB/c nude mice were subcutaneously injected with 4T1 tumor cells. Tumor growth and pulmonary metastasis were assessed. ALDEFLOUR™ assays were performed to identify aldehyde dehydrogenasebright (ALDHbr) tumor cells. ALDHbr cells as well as T cells from tumor-bearing BALB/c mice were analyzed using flow cytometry. The effects of CD8+ T cells on ALDHbr tumor cells were assessed in vitro and in vivo. The expression profiles of ALDHbr and ALDHdim 4T1 tumor cells were determined. The levels of plasma IFN-γ were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and their associations with the percentages of ALDHbr tumor cells were evaluated.
