The consumption of cheese in the People's Republic of China is increasing rapidly. Little is known about the microbiota, the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in commercially produced cheeses sold in China. This information is important for evaluating quality and safety. This study was conducted using 16S rRNA gene sequencing to assess the metagenomics of 15 types of cheese. Fourteen bacterial genera were detected, and Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus were dominant based on number of sequence reads. Multidrug-resistant lactic acid bacteria (i.e., resistant to two or more types of antibiotic) were isolated from most of the types of cheese. Of these isolates, 100 and 91.7% were resistant to streptomycin and sulfamethoxazole, respectively, and genes involved in acquired resistance to streptomycin (strB) and sulfonamides (sul2) were detected with high frequency. To analyze the distribution of ARGs in the cheeses overall, 309 ARGs from eight categories and nine transposase genes were profiled. A total of 169 ARGs were detected in the 15 cheeses; their occurrence and abundance varied significantly between cheeses. Our study revealed diverse bacteria and ARGs in cheeses sold in China. The risks associated with multidrug resistance among dominant lactic acid bacteria are of great concern.
The current article presents the first application of the Generalized Stochastic Microdosimetric Model (GSM2) for computing explicitly a cell survival curve. GSM2 is a general probabilistic model that predicts the kinetic evolution of DNA damages taking full advantage of a microdosimetric description of a radiation energy deposition. We show that, despite the high generality and flexibility of GSM2, an explicit form for the survival fraction curve predicted by the GSM2 is achievable. We illustrate how several correction terms typically added a posteriori in existing radiobiological models to improve the prediction accuracy, are naturally included into GSM2. Among the most relevant features of the survival curve derived from GSM2 and presented in this article, is the linear-quadratic behavior at low doses and a purely linear trend for high doses. The study also identifies and discusses the connections between GSM2 and existing cell survival models, such as the Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MKM) and the Multi-hit model. Several approximations to predict cell survival in different irradiation regimes are also introduced to include intercellular non-Poissonian behaviors.Hypoxia is associated with neoplastic tissue, protecting cancer cells from death by irradiation and chemotherapy. Identification of hypoxic volume of tumors could optimize patient selection for hypoxia-directed medical, immunological, and radiation therapies. Clostridium novyi-NT (CNV-NT) is an oncolytic bacterium derived from attenuated wild-type Clostridium novyi spores, which germinates exclusively in the anaerobic core of tumors with low-oxygen content. The hypothesis was that 64Cu-ATSM would localize to regions of hypoxia, and that greater hypoxic volume would result in greater germination of Clostridium novyi-NT (CNV-NT). Tumor-bearing companion dogs were recruited to a veterinary clinical trial. Dogs received a CT scan, 18F-FDG PET scan (74 MBq) and 64Cu-ATSM PET scan (74 MBq). Scan regions of interest were defined as the highest 20% of counts/voxel for each PET scan, and regions with voxels overlapping between the two scans. Maximum standardized uptake value (MaxSUV) and threshold volume were calculated. Direct oximetry was performed in select tumors. Tumor types evaluated included nerve sheath tumor (10), apocrine carcinoma (1), melanoma (3) and oral sarcoma (6). MaxSUVATSM ranged from 0.3-6.6. Measured oxygen tension ranged from 0.05-89.9 mmHg. Inverse of MaxSUVATSM had a linear relationship with oxygen tension (R2 = 0.53, P = 0.0048). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/troglitazone-cs-045.html Hypoxia 1.0. Hypoxic volume ranged from 0 to 100% of gross tumor volume (GTV) and MaxSUVATSM was positively correlated with hypoxic volume (R = 0.674; P = 0.0001), but not GTV (P = 0.182). Tumor hypoxic volume was heterogeneous in location and distribution. 64Cu-ATSM-avid regions were associated with differential CT attenuation. Hypoxic volume did not predict CNV-NT germination. 64Cu-ATSM PET scanning predicts hypoxia patterns within spontaneously occurring tumors of dogs as measured by direct oxymetry. Total tumor volume does not accurately predict degree or proportion of tumor hypoxia.Radiation can be applied for therapeutic benefit against cancer or may result in devastating harm due to accidental or intentional release of nuclear energy. In all cases, radiation exposure causes molecular and cellular damage, resulting in the production of inflammatory factors and danger signals. Several classes of innate immune receptors sense the released damage associated molecules and activate cellular response pathways, including the induction of inflammasome signaling that impacts IL-1β/IL-18 maturation and cell death. A previous report indicated inflammasomes aggravate acute radiation syndrome. In contrast, here we find that inflammasome components do not exacerbate gamma-radiation-induced injury by examining heterozygous and gene-deletion littermate controls in addition to wild-type mice. Absence of some inflammasome genes, such as caspase-1/11 and Nlrp3, enhance susceptibility of treated mice to acute radiation injury, indicating importance of the inflammasome pathway in radioprotection. Surprisingly, we discover that the survival outcome may be sex-dependent as more inflammasome-deficient male mice are susceptible to radiation-induced injury. We discuss parameters that may influence the role of inflammasomes as radioprotective or radioexacerbating factors in recovery from radiation injury including the use of littermate controls, the sex of the animals, differences in microbiota within the colonies and other experimental conditions. Under the conditions tested, inflammasome components do not exacerbate radiation injury, but rather provide protective benefit.
to map scientific knowledge about the repercussions of the infodemic on adult and elderly mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
this is a scoping review, developed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology, which included 33 articles. These articles were analyzed according to average age, gender and education level; place and period of the studies; exposure time to COVID-19 information; main signs and symptoms related to mental health; main sources of information; suggestions for mitigating the effects of the infodemic; and knowledge gaps.
the most present repercussions of the infodemic on the adult and elderly mental health were anxiety, depression and stress, and the most affected group was young adults and females.
future studies with more robust designs are needed to investigate the repercussions of the infodemic on people's mental health in the medium and long term, as well as to assess the effects, feasibility, cost-benefit and meaning of interventions in population groups, especially in the elderly population.

A greater understanding of sequence development throughout the polymerization process will aid the design of simple, generalizable methods to control sequence and tune supramolecular assembly. In previous simulations of solution-based step-growth copolymerizations, we have shown that weak, non-bonding attractions between monomers of the same type can produce a microphase separation among the lengthening nascent oligomers and thereby alter sequence. This work explores the phenomenon further, examining how effective attractive interactions, mediated by a solvent selective for one of the reacting species, impact the development of sequence and the supramolecular assembly in a simple A-B copolymerization. We find that as the effective attractions between monomers increase, an emergent self-organization of the reactants causes a shift in reaction kinetics and sequence development. When the solvent-mediated interactions are selective enough, the simple mixture of A and B monomers oligomerize and self-assemble into structures characteristic of amphiphilic copolymers. The composition and morphology of these structures and the sequences of their chains are sensitive to the relative balance of affinities between the comonomer species. Our results demonstrate the impact of differing A-B monomer-solvent affinities on sequence development in solution-based copolymerizations and are of consequence to the informed design of synthetic methods for sequence controlled amphiphilic copolymers and their aggregates.Contact between people with similar opinions and characteristics occurs at a higher rate than among other people, a phenomenon known as homophily. The presence of clusters of unvaccinated people has been associated with increased incidence of infectious disease outbreaks despite high population-wide vaccination rates. The epidemiological consequences of homophily regarding other beliefs as well as correlations among beliefs or circumstances are poorly understood, however. Here, we use a simple compartmental disease model as well as a more complex COVID-19 model to study how homophily and correlation of beliefs and circumstances in a social interaction network affect the probability of disease outbreak and COVID-19-related mortality. We find that the current social context, characterized by the presence of homophily and correlations between who vaccinates, who engages in risk reduction, and individual risk status, corresponds to a situation with substantially worse disease burden than in the absence of heterogeneities.
