Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 Review
Epson's EcoTank line of inkjet printers aims to alleviate one of the biggest expenses for photographers doing in-house printing: cartridges. The all-in-one ET-8550, which can print larger borderless photos of up to 13 by 19 inches as well as more common photo sizes, uses refillable tanks that can hold enough ink for 2,300 4x6 prints at only four cents a print. It also comes with plenty of specialty papers that can help you get really creative.

The ET-8550 is the first of its kind to offer a six-color print engine tuned for photo output, while still delivering high-quality documents and scan/copy support. That means it can't match a dedicated, cartridge-based fine-art roll printer in overall print quality, but it comes very close for the average casual or hobbyist photographer.

Its lofty marketing language talks about bringing lab-quality color photos and graphics to home printing at an incredible value, and it delivers on that promise. In fact, its six-color, Claria Premium ET-8550 ink system can produce archival-quality photos at a fraction of the cost per print of classic, cartridge-based photo printers.

There are two cassette trays and a rear photo feed for loading paper, and it can automatically print double-sided documents. The print head uses a hybrid dye/pigment ink set, with five dye inks (Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Gray) and a pigmented black ink that is used depending on the paper type selected. The ET-8550 can even print on thicker paper and card stock, but it's not recommended for use with textured or coated papers.

Like other recent inkjets, the ET-8550 supports Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity. It also has a flatbed scanner that can handle legal-size paper and can print directly from an SD card. It does not, however, have an automatic document feeder or fax functionality.

Setting up the printer is straightforward, but figuring out how to fill the six tanks can be somewhat confusing. You have to remove the tape that secures each tank, and then insert an ink cartridge into the corresponding colour compartment. Epson does provide helpful illustrations of this process on its website, and the printer's touch-screen control panel has an ink levels menu to make things easier.

Once you've got everything ready to go, it doesn't take long for the ET-8550 to start producing prints. mực in nhiệt was excellent across a range of paper types, though it's worth noting that the ET-8550's optimiser resolution is less than what you'd find in most professional-grade printers. This might be a problem for some photographers who prefer a very high-resolution prints, but it's not a big deal for most others.

In our tests, the ET-8550's six-colour prints looked vibrant and crisp on glossy photo papers and generally came out quite bright. The inks seemed to be well contained, and while the ET-8550 won't beat out a ten-ink fine-art roll printer when it comes to colour accuracy, it did an excellent job for a budget-minded home inkjet.
