In the subgroup of male donors the number of CD34+ stem cells after G-CSF mobilization was higher than average in summer and autumn (p = 0.036), however, it did not translate into clinically relevant differences in stem cell harvest. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) disproportionately affects those with mental health disorders and those with substance use, and the increasing HCV transmission in the United States is driven by the opioid epidemic. However, patients with a mental health disorder, substance use, or combination of both historically have had limited access to HCV treatment. The goal of our study was to compare sustained virologic response (SVR) rates of HCV treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) between subjects with and without a mental health disorder, substance use, or combination of both.

We performed a retrospective chart review at 1 Veterans affairs medical center of patients enrolled in the hepatitis C pharmacy clinic who completed DAA treatment from August 17, 2013 to August 17, 2017. The participants (N= 833 patients) were categorized into 2 groups those with at least 1 mental health disorder, substance use, or combination of both and those without. Baseline variables relevant to HCV treatment, DAA regimen, number of documented efforts to engage patients, and SVR data were collected.

Of the 833 study participants, 579 patients had a mental health disorder, substance use, or combination of both. The 3 most prevalent disorders were patient-reported substance use (n= 333), substance-related and addictive disorders (n= 176), and depressive disorders (n= 159). The SVR rates and number of documented efforts to engage patients before and during treatment through SVR laboratory completion between those with a mental health disorder, substance use, or combination of both and those without were not statically significant.

In 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 47,600 deaths as a result of opioid overdose in the United States. In an effort to reduce these deaths, California passed legislation providing pharmacists with the ability to furnish naloxone without a prescription. Our study examined pharmacies in San Francisco that furnished naloxone and provided guidance for pharmacies seeking to develop similar programs. The study aims were to (1) identify the legal, structural, social-environmental, and financial components of a pharmacy model that allows for successful naloxone distribution, (2) evaluate the attitudes and beliefs of pharmacy staff members toward patients receiving or requesting naloxone, and (3) assess relationships between these attitudes and beliefs and naloxone furnishing at the pharmacy.

This cross-sectional study used a series of semistructured interviews of pharmacy staff in San Francisco conducted April-October 2019. Through a thematic, inductive analysis of collected data, emerging themes were mapped to the primary study aims.

We interviewed 14 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians at 4 community pharmacies. We identified 4 factors for success in implementing a naloxone furnishing protocol administrative-led efforts, pharmacist-led efforts, increasing pharmacist engagement, and increasing patient engagement. The respondents also discussed the approaches they used to overcome previously identified barriers cost, time, expectations of unwanted clientele, and patients' feelings of stigma.

Numerous national and international studies have explored the issue of gender disparity in health science-publication rates. However, few have examined publication type (e.g., reviews and original research) and authorship order, which are 2 key factors in contribution recognition and the work's visibility and application.

The objective of this work was to determine the changes in the distribution of women as first authors by publication type over time in pharmacy practice journals.

This was a bibliometric data analysis of pharmacy practice publications from January 2007 through December 2017. We used data from the U.S. Social Security Administration, and the multilingual Genderize application program interface (Genderize.io) to identify the authors' potential gender. To determine the publication type, we used the Web of Science article list (Clarivate Analytics, Philadelphia, PA). The Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to determine the differences over time.

Articles published from January 2007 through December 2017 in 8 pharmacy practice journals were reviewed (N= 14,658 articles) research articles (63.8%), reviews (17.0%), editorial material (11.1%), and letters (8.1%). There was a statistically significant increase in the number of first-authored articles and reviews by women (45.1% to 55.4% and 39.2% to 56.1%, respectively). There was not a significant increase in the proportion of women as first authors in editorials or letters over the study period.

To reduce the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT), T-cell depletion (TCD) of grafts can be performed by the addition of alemtuzumab (ALT) "to the bag" (in vitro) before transplantation. In this prospective study, the authors analyzed the effect of in vitro incubation with 20 mg ALT on the composition of grafts prior to graft infusion. Furthermore, the authors assessed whether graft composition at the moment of infusion was predictive for T-cell reconstitution and development of GVHD early after TCD alloSCT.

Sixty granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized stem cell grafts were obtained from ≥9/10 HLA-matched related and unrelated donors.
