We highlight recent advances in active biomaterials and comment on their future impact.Metal ions imbalance, a well-established pathologic feature of alzheimer's disease (AD), ultimately results in the deposition of amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) proteins and Aβ-induced neurotoxicity. Herein, to overcome these hurdles, an intelligent Aβ nanocaptor with the capacity to chelate metal ions and targeted therapy is developed by anchoring carbon nitride (C3N4) nanodots to Fe3O4@mesoporous silica nanospheres, and decorated with benzothiazole aniline (BTA) (designated as B-FeCN). The C3N4 nanodots could effectively capture superfluous Cu2+ to suppress the formation of Cu2+-Aβ complex thereby eliminating Aβ aggregation. Simultaneously, the nanocaptor enables local low-temperature hyperthermia to promote the dissolution of preformed fiber precipitates, therefore, maximizing the therapeutic benefits. Owing to its favorable photothermal effect, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability of the nanocaptor is noticeably ameliorated upon laser illumination, which conquers the limitations associated with traditional anti-AD drugs, as evidenced by in vivo and in vitro studies. Besides, leveraging on the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 core, the nanocaptor is magnetized to access to the targeted Aβ regions under extrinsic magnetic field. BTA conjugation, which specifically binds to the β2 position of the Aβ fibers, executes specific targeting at Aβ plaques, and synchronously endows the BTA-modified nanocaptor with fluorescent imaging property for sensitively detecting Aβ aggregates. Enitociclib order In view of these superiorities, nanocaptors combine metallostasis restoration and Aβ targeted therapy can surmount the interference of copper ions, enhance BBB permeability and protect cells against Aβ-induced neurotoxicity, which provides new avenues for developing neuroprotective nanosystems for the treatment of alzheimer's disease. The northern fowl mite (NFM), Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite of domestic and wild birds, and it is an economic pest of laying hen in North America, China, India, Australia, Myanmar, and Brazil. Such an economically important pest remains neglected in many parts of the world, including Asian countries. Therefore, concerted action is required in both basic and applied research directed at the biology and control of this destructive pest. In the present study, we have developed a novel, high-welfare in vivo feeding capsule that would permit pre-screening of new interventions, repellency and deterrence effects of plant-derived products and other semiochemical compounds before proceeding to large-scale field experiments/bioassays, while the minimum number of animals is required to obtain results. Mites were fed on the birds through either a mesh or without a mesh. The average feeding rates of mites was significantly higher when fed directly on chickens, whereas 106 μm nylon mesh was the top-performing mesh when compared with 125 μm aperture nylon mesh. For optimal feeding, the feeding capsules contain NFM and are attached to the skin of the chicken's thigh for 6 h. This is a simple, reproducible, and easy approach and can be adapted to facilitate many aspects of bioassays.
To investigate midwifery students' experiences of viewing childbirth on mainstream factual television and to explore implications for student career intentions and potential pedagogical uses of television excerpts in midwifery education.

Twenty-two undergraduate midwifery students at one of two universities took place in focus groups between February and June 2019. Ethical approval was obtained at both sites. Thematic analysis was employed to generate key themes from the data.

Two UK universities based in the East Midlands and East Yorkshire regions of England.

Twenty-two midwifery students at any stage of their studies.

Researchers generated four key themes from the data a) Changed Perspectives on Televised Childbirth, b) Representations of Midwives and Social Implications, c) Representation of Childbirth and Social Implications and d) The Role of Televising Childbirth in Midwifery Education.

Midwifery students often experience a change of perspective on birth on television as they acquire new knowledge and skills. They recognise the potential social implications of how childbirth and midwifery are represented on television. Pedagogical use of televised birth has potential benefits but needs further investigation in the context of midwifery education.

Midwifery students are likely to begin their studies with pre-existing views and experiences around how birth is represented on mainstream factual television. link2 They may need support to reflect on these to consider their expectations of the profession, to effectively support childbearing women and to potentially influence future production of media images of childbirth.

To assess MRI appearance of the dermal allograft and its correlation with clinical outcome following superior capsular reconstruction (SCR).

This is a retrospective study of patients who underwent SCR between 2015 and 2018. Patients with postoperative MRI and clinical follow-up were included. Exclusion criteria were preoperative shoulder instability, advanced glenohumeral arthritis, and lack of postoperative MRI or clinical follow-up. link3 Radiographs and MRIs were evaluated for graft integrity and position, acromiohumeral interval, superior subluxation distance (SSD), and glenohumeral cartilage loss. Correlation between imaging and clinical outcome measures were assessed.

24 shoulders (23 patients) met the inclusion criteria at a mean clinical and MRI follow-up of 9.1months. There were 12 intact grafts (50%) and 12 torn grafts (50%), most commonly at the glenoid attachment (8/12). Patients with graft tear had greater SSD (mean 10.5±6.1mm) than those without tear (mean 6.1±3.8mm) (p=0.028). SSD>7.9mm had a 79% sensitivity and 91% specificity for graft tear. The intact grafts were more commonly covering the superior humeral head (91.7%) compared with the torn grafts (41.7%) (p=0.027). There was improvement of clinical outcome measures including American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score (p=0.005) and forward elevation (p=0.021) although there was no correlation between clinical outcome and integrity of the graft.

SCR results in significant short-term clinical improvement even in the presence of graft tear on postoperative MRIs on current study. Gap between graft and the anchors, non-superior position of the graft, and humeral head superior subluxation can be associated with tear.

Co2+ (as a central atom) and 2-methylimidazole (as organic ligands) were assembled to fabricate ZIF-67/GO NPs for providing epoxy-based anti-corrosion coatings with both active (self-healing) and passive (barrier) performance. Also, the ZIF-67/GO NPs were modified by 3-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS) to improve the particles compatibility with the epoxy matrix and control their solubility in saline media. The FE-SEM, FT-IR, UV-Vis, Raman, TGA, and low-angle XRD techniques were used to prove the successful ZIF-67 particles growth onto the GO platforms. Tafel (potentiodynamic) polarization test demonstrated that the ZIF-67/GO@APS NPs could protect the surface of steel through mixed anodic/cathodic type (O2 reduction/Fe oxidation) mechanisms and the corrosion current density of the iron sample decreased to 1.41 µA·cm-2. Interestingly, the epoxy coatings containing ZIF-67/GO and ZIF-67/GO@APS particles revealed long-term corrosion protection durability and outstanding self-healing anti-corrosion performance, which were well studied via EIS, salt spray, cathodic delamination, and pull-off techniques. The impedance value at the lowest frequency for the coating containing ZIF-67/GO@APS after 50 days decreased from 10.7 Ω·cm2 to 10.2 Ω·cm2 that showed the lowest reduction among the studied samples.
Medicare used the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) Model to mandate that hospitals in certain health care markets accept bundled payments for lower extremity joint replacement surgery. CJR has reduced spending with stable quality as intended among Medicare fee-for-service patients, but benefits could "spill over" to individuals insured through private health plans. Definitive evidence of spillovers remains lacking.

To evaluate the association between CJR participation and changes in outcomes among privately insured individuals.

We used 2013-2017 Health Care Cost Institute claims for 418,016 privately insured individuals undergoing joint replacement in 75 CJR and 121 Non-CJR markets. Multivariable generalized linear models with hospital and market random effects and time fixed effects were used to analyze the association between CJR participation and changes in outcomes.

Total episode spending, discharge to institutional post-acute care, and quality (e.g., surgical complications, readmissions).

Patients in CJR and Non-CJR markets did not differ in total episode spending (difference of -$157, 95% CI -$1043 to $728, p=0.73) or discharge to institutional post-acute care (difference of -1.1%, 95% CI -3.2%-1.0%, p=0.31). Similarly, patients in the two groups did not differ in quality or other utilization outcomes. Findings were generally similar in stratified and sensitivity analyses.

There was a lack of evidence of cost or utilization spillovers from CJR to privately insured individuals. There may be limits in the ability of certain value-based payment reforms to drive broad changes in care delivery and patient outcomes.

In anticipation of patient surge due to COVID-19, many states are working to increase the available healthcare workforce. To help inform state policies and initiatives aimed at physician deployment during COVID-19, we used predictions of peak patient volume for hospitals and intensive care units (ICU) and regional physician workforce estimates to measure patient to physician ratios at the peak of the pandemic for each state.

We estimated the number of potentially available physicians based on Medicare Part B billings for the care of hospitalized and critically ill patients in 2017, adjusted for attrition due to exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and relevant experience. We used estimates from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation to determine the number of hospitalized and ICU patients expected at the peak of the pandemic in each state. We then determined the expected ratio of patients per physician for each state at the peak of the pandemic.

The median number of hospitalized patients per physician was 13 (low estimate) to 18 (high estimate).
