As the effective near-infrared (NIR) photothermal materials, the as prepared GNRs conjugates can absorb NIR photo energy and convert it into heat under irradiation, which can efficiently kill the tumor cells. In cell assay, the GNRs conjugates displayed excellent biocompatibility against normal cell, enhanced cancer cell uptake, and remarkable cancer cell killing effects. In HeLa tumor-bearing mice, the GNRs conjugates demonstrated enhanced tumor inhibition efficacy by combination of chemo-photothermal therapy.
New-onset olfactory and gustatory dysfunction (OGD) represents a well-acknowledged COVID-19 red flag. Nevertheless, its clinical, virological and serological features are still a matter of debate.

For this cohort study, 170 consecutive subjects with new-onset OGD were consecutively recruited. Otolaryngological examination, OGD subjective grading, nasopharyngeal swabs (NS) for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection and serum samples (SS) collection for SARS-CoV-2 IgG quantification were conducted at baseline and after one (T1), two (T2) and four weeks (T3).

SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed in 79% of patients. Specifically, 43% of positive patients were detected only by SS analysis. The OGD was the only clinical complaint in 10% of cases. Concurrent sinonasal symptoms were reported by 45% of patients. Subjective improvement at T3 was reported by 97% of patients, with 40% recovering completely. Hormonal disorders and RNA detectability in NS were the only variables associated with OGD severity. Recovery rate was higher in case of seasonal influenza vaccination, lower in patients with systemic involvement and severe OGD. Not RNA levels nor IgG titers were correlated with recovery.

Clinical, virological and serological features of COVID-19 related OGD were monitored longitudinally, offering valuable hints for future research on the relationship between host characteristics and chemosensory dysfunctions.

The radial and translational motions, as well as the resultant acoustic emissions of two interacting cavitation bubbles in viscoelastic tissues were numerically investigated. Due to the bubble-bubble interactions, a remarkable suppression effect on the small bubble, whereas a slight enhancement effect on the large one were observed within the acoustic exposure parameters and the initial radii of the bubbles examined in this paper. Moreover, as the initial distance between bubbles increases, the strong suppression effect is reduced gradually and it could effectively enhance the nonlinear dynamics of bubbles, exactly as the bifurcation diagrams exhibit a similar mode of successive period doubling to chaos. Correspondingly, the resultant acoustic emissions present a progressive evolution of harmonics, subharmonics, ultraharmonics and broadband components in the frequency spectra. In addition, with the elasticity and/or viscosity of the surrounding medium increasing, both the nonlinear dynamics and translational motions of bubbles were reduced prominently. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the nonlinear behaviors and acoustic emissions of two interacting cavitation bubbles in viscoelastic media, it may contribute to optimizing and monitoring the cavitation-mediated biomedical applications.Shrimp surimi is widely acknowledged as a value-added shrimp product due to its delicious taste, rich flavor, and nutrition. However, the refrigerated shrimp surimi is prone to deterioration due to rapid microbial growth during storage. The present study sought to assess the effects of curcumin-mediated sono/photodynamic treatment on bacterial spoilage and shrimp surimi quality stored at 4 °C. The total viable count (TVC), microbiota composition, and quality parameters, including the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARs), and pH were investigated. The results showed that the spoilage bacteria in shrimp surimi rapidly increased with a surge on day 2 during refrigeration storage. The Psychrobacter and Brochothrix were identified as the Specific Spoilage Organisms (SSOs), which were also positively correlated with TVB-N and TBARs. The results further elucidated that the sono/photodynamic treatment could significantly inhibit the growth of SSOs on the surface and interior of shrimp surimi and delay shrimp surimi quality deterioration. In conclusion, the sono/photodynamic treatment as a non-thermal sterilization method could be a reliable and potential method for inactivating spoilage microorganisms and preserving shrimp surimi quality.Riparian forests are ecotones that link aquatic and terrestrial habitats, providing ecosystem services including sediment control and nutrient regulation. Riparian forest function is intimately linked to river hydrology and floodplain dynamics, which can be severely altered by dams. The Tocantins River in the eastern Amazon has six mega-dams along its course. To understand the large-scale and cumulative impacts of multiple dams on the Tocantins floodplain, we quantified landscape-scale changes in floodplain extent, hydroperiod, and flood timing on a 145-km stretch of the river downstream of five dams. We used water level data from 1985 to 2019 to compare daily floodplain inundation dynamics before and after damming. We also developed models to examine the impacts of climate and land use change on hydrology of the Tocantins River. After installation of the first dam in 1998, an average of 82.3 km2 (63%) of the floodplain no longer flooded, overall average hydroperiod decreased by 15 days (11%), and flooding started an average of five days earlier. After all five dams were installed, 72% of the average pre-dam flooded area no longer flooded, average hydroperiod had decreased by 35%, and average inundation onset occurred 12 days later. These changes in floodplain hydrology appeared to be driven primarily by dam operations as we found no significant changes in precipitation over the study period. Increasing loss of natural vegetation in the watershed may play a role in changed hydrology but cannot explain the abrupt loss of floodplain extent after the first dam was installed. This is one of few studies to quantify dam-induced floodplain alteration at a landscape scale and to investigate impacts of multiple dams on a landscape. Our results indicate that the Tocantins River floodplain is undergoing drastic hydrologic alteration. The impacts of multiple dams are cumulative and non-linear, especially for hydroperiod and flood timing.Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) plays an important role in mitigating climate change and ameliorating soil degradation because of its high carbon sequestration capacity and erosion resistance. Its strong underground rhizome-root systems form the basic framework of the aboveground system of Moso bamboo forest and define the basic ecological characteristics. However, studies on the relationship between the spatial distribution of roots and soil resources have often been neglected due to methodological limitations. The objective of this study was to test the detectability of rhizomes in the field by ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and to understand the interactions between rhizome-root systems and soil characteristics. The rhizome-root system distribution was investigated using GPR; and the soil texture, soil organic carbon and soil nutrients were investigated using a soil coring method to prepare 50-cm soil profiles. A few key findings were emphasized. First, the rhizome-root system was mainly distributed t ecosystems.Long-term monitoring reveals the spatio-temporal evolution of groundwater chemistry, quality and human health risk, providing detailed and robust evidence for groundwater utilization. The Pinggu basin of North China Plain is significant place reserving drinking groundwater. 184 samples were collected from fifty-eight monitoring wells during 2015-2017. Ratios of major ions and geochemical modelling were carried out to clarify the factors controlling the hydrogeochemical compositions. Groundwater displayed the hydrochemical type of Ca-HCO3 and its compositions were determined by calcite and dolomite dissolution with cation exchange reaction. NO3- contamination was derived from agriculture activities. The entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) results indicated the majority of total groundwater samples except those in some southwestern and northwestern parts were able to meet the requirement of drinking purposes. Groundwater quality was affected by the total dissolved solid, Ca2+, HCO3- and NO3- concentrations. Human health risk of groundwater drinking depended on the NO3- concentration and followed the order of children > adult females ≈ adult males, according to the hazard quotient (HQ) used in the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model. Protection and management measures for groundwater resources were made for the Pinggu basin and other similar areas, based on the spatio-temporal analysis of groundwater chemistry, quality and potential human health risks.Traditionally, water quality was assessed by physicochemical parameters. However, a more comprehensive analysis is needed to study the effects of polluted water bodies on key species over time. So, the aim of this study was to monitor through physicochemical and ecotoxicological indicators the surface water quality of four study sites with different land uses from the lower Paraná river basin (Argentina) during spring and summer of two years Morejón stream (S1), De la Cruz stream upstream (S2), downstream (S3) and Arrecifes river (S4). Physicochemical parameters were measured in situ and in laboratory, and a Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated. Chronic toxicity bioassays were performed with surface water samples using Rhinella arenarum embryos and larvae. Also, oxidative stress (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, reduced glutathione and lipid peroxidation), neurotoxicity (butyrylcholinesterase) and genotoxicity (micronuclei frequency) biomarkers were measured at acute exposure, and an Integrated Biomarkers Response (IBR) index was calculated. The water quality varied between excellent and bad in S1, good and bad in S2 and S3, and bad and marginal in S4. S1 presented the greatest variability of pesticides and S4 the highest number of metals exceeding the limits for the local protection of aquatic life. Mainly, S4 caused lethality in R. 5-Fluorouracil arenarum larvae, reaching a maximum mortality of 83.3% at 504 h of exposure. The lethal toxicity of S1 and S2 varied between periods. Water samples from all sites altered the oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity biomarkers, and the IBR was negatively correlated with the WQI. The IBR reflected the effects of the degraded water quality on the exposed organisms. So, the importance of evaluating both physicochemical and ecotoxicological parameters to analyze integrally the water quality of polluted areas is highlighted. A degradation of the studied water bodies and its negative impact to the native amphibian R. arenarum were observed.
