This study is focused on the valorization of heterogeneous municipal solid waste collected from the landfill using hydrothermal liquefaction process using glycerol as a co-solvent. The effects of temperature (300-350 °C) and residence time (15-45 min) on the yields and quality of the product fractions were investigated at 8 wt% solid loading. The yield of bio-crude significantly increased from 15.2 wt% with water as the solvent, to 58 wt% with water-glycerol (11 v/v) as the solvent possessing an energy content of 35.6 MJ/kg at 350 °C, 30 min. The quality of the bio-crude obtained using glycerol was comparable to that using tetralin as a hydrogen donor co-solvent. Phenolic compounds and cyclooxygenates were the major compounds in the bio-crude, and aliphatic hydrocarbons increased with residence time. Maximum energy recovery of 95% was achieved in the products with an energy consumption ratio of 0.43 for the bio-crude signifying the energetic feasibility of the process.Although neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is a crucial component of treatment for locally advanced breast cancer (LABC), only about 70% of patients respond to it. Effective adjustment of NAC for individual patients can significantly improve survival rates of those resistant to standard regimens. Thus, the early prediction of NAC outcome is of great importance in facilitating a personalized paradigm for breast cancer therapeutics. In this study, quantitative computed tomography (qCT) parametric imaging in conjunction with machine learning techniques were investigated to predict LABC tumor response to NAC. Textural and second derivative textural (SDT) features of CT images of 72 patients diagnosed with LABC were analysed before the initiation of NAC to quantify intra-tumor heterogeneity. These quantitative features were processed through a correlation-based feature reduction followed by a sequential feature selection with a bootstrap 0.632+ area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC0.632+) criterion. The best feature subset consisted of a combination of one textural and three SDT features. Using these features, an AdaBoost decision tree could predict the patient response with a cross-validated AUC0.632+ accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 0.88, 85%, 88% and 75%, respectively. This study demonstrates, for the first time, that a combination of textural and SDT features of CT images can be used to predict breast cancer response NAC prior to the start of treatment which can potentially facilitate early therapy adjustments.Resistin, a small secretory molecule, has been implicated to play an important role in the development of insulin resistance under obese condition. For the past few decades, it has been linked to various cellular and metabolic functions. It has been associated with diseases like metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Numerous clinical studies have indicated an increased serum resistin level in pathological disorders which have been reported to increase mortality rate in comparison to low resistin expressing subjects. Various molecular studies suggest resistin plays a pivotal role in proliferation, metastasis, angiogenesis, inflammation as well as in regulating metabolism in cancer cells. Therefore, understanding the role of resistin and elucidating its' associated molecular mechanism will give a better insight into the management of these disorders. In this article, we summarize the diverse roles of resistin in pathological disorders based on the available literature, clinicopathological data, and a compiled study from various databases. The article mainly provides comprehensive information of its role as a target in different treatment modalities in pre as well as post-clinical studies.Autoimmune phenomena and clinically apparent autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune hepatitis, are increasingly been reported not only after natural infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but also after vaccination against it. We report the case of a 63-year old man without a history of autoimmunity or SARS-CoV-2 natural infection who experienced acute severe autoimmune-like hepatitis seven days after the first dose of the mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Liver histology showed inflammatory portal infiltrate with interface hepatitis, lobular and centrilobular inflammation with centrilobular necrosis, in absence of fibrosis and steatosis. Serum immunoglobulin G was slightly elevated. Autoimmune liver serology showed an indirect immunofluorescence pattern on triple rodent tissue compatible with anti-mitochondrial antibody (AMA), but, unexpectedly, this pattern was not mirrored by positivity for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)-specific molecular tests, indicating that this antibody is different from classical AMA. Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) was also positive with a rim-like indirect immunofluorescence pattern on liver and HEp2 cell substrates, similar to PBC-specific ANA; however, anti-gp210 and a large panel of molecular-based assays for nuclear antigens were negative, suggesting a unique ANA in our patient. He carries the HLA DRB1*1101 allele, which is protective against PBC. Response to prednisone treatment was satisfactory. The clinical significance of these novel specificities needs to be further evaluated in this emerging condition.Electronic charge near the active site is an important factor for controlling the reactivity of metalloenzymes. Here, to investigate the effect of the cationic charge near the heme in heme proteins, we synthesized new iron porphyrin complexes (1 and 2) having cationic 3-methyl-N-methyl-2-pyrdinium group and N-methyl-2-pyridinium group at one of the four meso-positions, respectively. The N-methyl-2-pyridinium groups could be introduced by Stille coupling used palladium catalysts. Oxoiron(IV) porphyrin π-cation radical complexes (Compound I) of 1 (1-CompI) and 2 (2-CompI) are soluble in most organic solvents, allowing direct comparison of their electronic structure and reactivity with Compound I of tetramesitylporphyrin (3-CompI) and tetrakis-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrin (4-CompI) under the same conditions. Spectroscopic data for 1-CompI are close to those for 3-CompI, but the redox potential for 1-CompI is close to that of 4-CompI. Kinetic analysis of the epoxidation reactions shows that 1-CompI and 2-CompI are (~250-fold) more reactive than 3-CompI, and comparable to 4-CompI. ML364 solubility dmso DFT calculations allow to propose that the positive shift of the redox potential and the enhanced reactivity of 1-CompI and 2-CompI is induced by the intramolecular electric field effect of N-methyl-2-pyridinium cation, not by the electron-withdrawing effect.
Intronic variants of the SCN1A gene are detected in patients with epilepsy with febrile seizures (EFS), which includes a series of phenotypes with different severities. However, the pathogenicity of intronic variants and their genotype-phenotype correlation remain under characterized. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in mRNA splicing caused by SCN1A intronic variants associated with EFS and their association with phenotypes.
Five SCN1A intronic variants detected in patients with focal epilepsy with antecedent febrile seizures plus (FEFS+) and Dravet syndrome (DS) were molecularly cloned. Through an in vitro minigene splicing assay, their influence on mRNA splicing was qualitatively and quantitatively compared and analyzed using reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and fluorescence quantitative PCR (Q-PCR).

This study evaluates the effect of daily exercise on inattentive/hyperactive behaviours among young children by leveraging evidence from a quasi-experiment generated when 3 Canadian provinces adopted mandatory requirements for all students in grades 1 through 6 to participate in 20-30 min of daily physical activity at school between 1994 and 2009. By exploiting plausibly exogenous variations in the timing of implementation and duration of physical activity mandated as well as over 20,000 observations on a sample of nationally representative children, our difference-in-differences estimates indicate that brief bouts of daily exercise at school effectively reduce inattention/hyperactivity in children - with the beneficial effect enhanced by the duration of exercise mandated. Importantly, most of the exercise effect is concentrated on boys. Since boys' higher rates of inattention/hyperactivity contribute to the explanation for boys' lagging academic motivation and achievement, we argue that providing more scope for physical activity during the school day might be a feasible policy option not only for reducing inattentive/hyperactive behaviours, but also for helping to close the educational gender gap in the longer run.
There is scant research on pregnancy experiences of women with physical disabilities in low and middle-income countries. This qualitative study used an intersectional lens to explore pregnancy experiences of women with physical disabilities in northern Vietnam. Specifically, socio-cultural, economic, and environmental influences were analysed, drawing upon their lived experiences.
Two in-depth interviews were conducted at different time-points in 2018 with women with physical disabilities who had given birth in the previous three years. Twenty-nine women participated in the first interview and 27 in the follow-up interview. The interviews were thematically analysed.
The women were happy and excited when discovering their pregnancy but they also experienced anxiety, fear, and distress. Their ambivalence related to concerns around having a child with disabilities, their capability to carry a pregnancy, and their mothering abilities. Negative community views of disability were internalised by the women. Thir experiences to ensure maternal and child health providers become more sensitive to their pregnancy and motherhood needs.
This study contributes to knowledge and understanding about women with physical disabilities, specifically how the intersection of gender, disability, socio-economic, and marital status shaped their pregnancy experiences in Vietnam. Multiple challenges were encountered by the women in their pregnancy journey, including negative community views, inaccessible environments, and poverty. The findings highlight the necessity for Vietnamese women with physical disabilities to be actively engaged in talking about their experiences to ensure maternal and child health providers become more sensitive to their pregnancy and motherhood needs.
This paper uses a survival analysis technique to examine socio-economic and demographic factors that influence under-five mortality for rural and urban Ghana.
The paper employs the Breslow Method for Ties for survival probability and uses data for the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS). Data on some 5884 children was also generated through the interview of 4086 women aged 15-49. They indicated the birth histories of the children under five years.
The study finds the most significant socio-economic determinants of a child survival in Ghana to be maternal age, mother's education, household wealth index quintile, place of delivery and birth order. The influence of these determinants on child survival differ from urban to rural.
The survival probabilities of these explanatory variables are different in the rural area from the urban area. Therefore, it is imperative to scale up efforts in the rural area to ensure children live up to age five.
