The simulations showed that the use of low tracer-input concentrations eliminated this phenomenon. This is consistent with the measured data for effluent-sample masses, which exhibited minimal change during the tests, and with the observation that the interfacial areas obtained with the low-concentration-tracer method were consistent with values measured with two methods that are not influenced by tracer-induced drainage. These results demonstrate that the low-concentration miscible-displacement tracer test method is an effective approach for measuring air-water interfacial areas in porous media. In some environments, a number of crops, notably maize and nuts can be contaminated by aflatoxin B1 and related compounds resulting from the growth of aflatoxin-producing Aspergilli. Fungal peroxidases have been shown to degrade a number of mycotoxins, including aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro enzymatic degradation AFB1 by a recombinant type B dye decolorizing peroxidase (Rh_DypB). Analysis of the reaction products by HPLC-MS analysis showed that under optimized conditions AFB1 was efficiently transformed by Rh_DypB, reaching a maximum of 96% conversion after 4 days of reaction at 25 °C. Based on high resolution mass spectrometry analysis, AFB1 was demonstrated to be quantitatively converted to AFQ1, a compound with a significantly lower toxicity. A number of low molecular mass compounds were also present in the final reaction mixture in small quantities. The results presented in this study are promising for a possible application of the enzyme Rh_DypB for aflatoxin reduction in feed. Glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) using is increasing on a global scale. Few studies have investigated the sub-lethal effects of GBH in endemic amphibian species. The present work tested the GBH Roundup Active® on the tadpoles of Dendropsophus molitor. The exposure was in a range of plausible environmental concentrations (0-0.75 μg a.e./L) during a month. D. molitor is an endemic tropical frog of South America. The exposure from 325 μg a.e./L caused histological alterations in the liver. The high-resolution optical microscopy (HROM) detected sinusoidal dilatation and cytoplasmic vacuolization. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed disorganization of the endoplasmic reticulum. Since the liver is essential for detoxification, these results suggest choric effects. Exposure to another GBH has caused histological alterations in liver tadpoles liver in a previous study, but, this study tested another endemic South-American frog for only 96h. The present work applied HROM to observe lipid alterations since it does not use organic solvents; and TEM for the ultrastructural observation of hepatocytes. Environmental risk of GBH can improve by including sub-lethal effects in endemic species. OBJECTIVES Free jejunal flap for circumferential pharyngeal reconstruction is associated with late-onset dysphagia, regurgitation and prolonged transit time. This study aims to assess the feasibility and efficacy of Botulinum toxin A (Botox) in alleviating such swallowing dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-six consecutive patients underwent free jejunal flap for circumferential pharyngeal reconstruction between January 2012 and December 2018. Outcomes were compared at 6, 12 and 24 months. RESULTS In the non-Botox group (n = 13), video-fluoroscopic and manometry studies demonstrated asynchronous contractions and retrograde propulsion. All patients complained of nasal regurgitation on thin fluids at 6, 12 and 24 months. Bolus residue accumulation along jejunal mucosal folds resulted in prolonged transit time. In the Botox group (n = 13), amplitude of asynchronous contractions were lower 25.4 mmHg vs. 52.1 mmHg (p = 0.037) for thin fluids at 12 months. Three patients complained of nasal regurgitation on thin fluids at 6 months. All 3 were asymptomatic at 12 months. Transit time was shortened overall. Functional Oral Intake Scale was higher. MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory global (72.5% vs 45.7%, p = 0.003) and functional (62.0% vs 40.6%, p = 0.012) subscales were significantly improved at 24 months. CONCLUSION Botox safely and effectively alleviates swallowing dysfunction associated with free jejunal flap for circumferential pharyngeal reconstruction. We used the Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) to simulate elemental carbon (EC) concentrations in Thailand in 2017. The goals were to quantify the respective contributions of local emissions and regional transport outside Thailand to EC pollution in Thailand, and to identify the most effective emission control strategy for decreasing EC pollution. The simulated EC concentrations in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Phuket were comparable with the observation data. The correlation coefficient between the simulated and observed EC concentrations was 0.84, providing a good basis for evaluating EC sources in Thailand. The simulated mean EC concentration over the whole country was the highest (1.38 μg m-3) in spring, and the lowest (0.51 μg m-3) in summer. We conducted several sensitivity simulations to evaluate EC sources. Local emissions (including anthropogenic and biomass burning emissions) and regional transport outside Thailand contributed 81.2% and 18.8% to the annual mean EC cl information for air pollution control strategies in Thailand. Triclocarban (TCC), a broad-spectrum lipophilic antibacterial agent, is the main ingredient of personal and health care products. selleck Nonetheless, its ubiquitous presence in the environment has been established to negatively affect the reproduction in humans and animals. In this work, we studied the possible toxic effects of TCC on mouse oocytes maturation in vitro. Our findings revealed that TCC-treated immature mouse oocytes had a significantly reduced rate of polar body extrusion (PBE) compared to that of control. Further study demonstrated that the cell cycle progression and cytoskeletal dynamics were disrupted after TCC exposure, which resulted in the continuous activation of spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC). Moreover, TCC-treated oocytes had mitochondrial damage, reduced ATP content, and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Furthermore, TCC exposure induced oxidative stress and subsequently triggered early apoptosis in mouse oocytes. Besides, the levels of histone methylation were also affected, as indicated by increased H3K27me2 and H3K27me3 levels. In summary, our results revealed that TCC exposure disrupted mouse oocytes maturation through affecting cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal dynamics, oxidative stress, early apoptosis, mitochondria function, and histone modifications in vitro. Current understanding on the fate and behavior of microplastics (MPs) in complex soil media remains inadequate. We characterized the aging and hetero-aggregation of a MP sampled in farmland soil, and explored its vertical downward transport in natural loamy sand. The MP was identified with FTIR spectrum as polypropylene, a plastic lighter than water. FTIR spectrum combined with SEM imaging confirmed the MP was highly aged, generating colloidal plastic fibers and carbonyl groups. SEM imaging coupled with EDX analysis suggested hetero-aggregation of the MP with soil minerals. Soil leaching tests performed with the clean MP (without soil minerals) (CMP), the raw MP (RMP) (with soil minerals), and the RMP with humic acid (HA) (RMP + HA) demonstrated that the mobility was insignificant for the CMP, moderate for the RMP and highest for the RMP + HA, resulting in a maximal downward traveling distance of 0 cm, 3-4 cm, and 9-10 cm, respectively. Correlation between the maximal traveling distance and zeta potential of the CMP, RMP, and RMP + HA confirmed surface charge as a dominant control on the MP mobility; while the increasing density of the MP, due to hetero-aggregation with soil minerals, was identified as a driving mechanism for its downward transport, despite its intrinsic density lower than water. Occurrence of only the lower-sized rod-shaped plastic fibers at the maximal traveling distance suggested the natural aging, a process leading to plastic vibration and fragmentation, was conducive to plastic translocation. The three explored classes of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (tetracycline, beta-lactam and sulfonamide) were all detected in the plastic surface, suggesting the MP may function as a potential pathway for the dissemination of ARGs to the deeper soil layer. These findings are important to understand the concentration distribution of both the MPs and ARGs in agriculture impacted soils, a natural reservoir of both emerging contaminants. Supported carbon quantum dots (CQDs), used as fluorescent sensors for the detection of metal ions, have rarely been used to remove heavy metals from water. Nitrogen-doped CQDs immobilized in hydrophilic silica hydrogels exhibited a more superior sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Re(VII) and Cr(VI) than other metal ions, including Fe(III), Fe(II), Zn(II), Cu(II) and Mn(II). For the first time, low limits of detection (LOD) of 2.3 μM for Re(VII) detection and 65 nM for Cr(VI) detection were reported by a facile method. Based on the high selectivity of fluorescent silica hydrogels for Re(VII) and Cr(VI) detection, the removal of Re(VII) and Cr(VI) by graphene oxide (GO) in water was monitored with the hydrogels used as a turn-off fluorescent sensing platform. The consistent results of the sorption isotherms of each metal on GO, which were obtained from the fluorescence spectra and by UV absorption, further verified the possibility of monitoring metal removal by fluorescence detection. Remarkably, GO removed 1186 mg/g of Re(VII) but only 178 mg/g of Cr(VI). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that both Re(VII) and Cr(VI) formed stable bonds with silica hydrogels, confirming that the interactions between the metal ions and the substrate would promote the fluorescence quenching of the supported CQDs. On the other hand, Re(VII) interacted more strongly with the carboxyl groups of GO than Cr(VI). In addition, a real-time detection system was designed to alarm the service life of a GO filter used for Re(VII) removal. The impact of nanoplastics (NP) using model polystyrene nanoparticles amine functionalized (PS-NH2) has been investigated on pigment and lipid compositions of the marine diatom Chaetoceros neogracile, at two growth phases using a low (0.05 μg mL-1) and a high (5 μg mL-1) concentrations for 96 h. Results evidenced an impact on pigment composition associated to the light-harvesting function and photoprotection mainly at exponential phase. NP also impacted lipid composition of diatoms with a re-adjustment of lipid classes and fatty acids noteworthy. Main changes upon NP exposure were observed in galactolipids and triacylglycerol's at both growth phases affecting the thylakoids membrane structure and cellular energy reserve of diatoms. Particularly, exponential cultures exposed to high NP concentration showed an impairment of long chain fatty acids synthesis. Changes in pigment and lipid content of diatom' cells revealed that algae physiology is determinant in the way cells adjust their thylakoid membrane composition to cope with NP contamination stress.
