The outstanding properties of graphene offer high potential for biomedical applications. In this framework, positively charged nanomaterials show better interactions with the biological environment, hence there is strong interest in the production of positively charged graphene nanosheets. Currently, production of cationic graphene is either time consuming or producing dispersions with poor stability, which strongly limit their use in the biomedical field. In this study, we made a family of new cationic pyrenes, and have used them to successfully produce water-based, highly concentrated, stable, and defect-free graphene dispersions with positive charge. The use of different pyrene derivatives as well as molecular dynamics simulations allowed us to get insights on the nanoscale interactions required to achieve efficient exfoliation and stabilisation. The cationic graphene dispersions show outstanding biocompatibility and cellular uptake as well as exceptional colloidal stability in the biological medium, making this material extremely attractive for biomedical applications. In situ electrochemical activation as a new pretreating method to adjust electrocatalytic performance attracts extensive attention. However, the activation mechanisms of electrocatalysts are still ambiguous. Herein, we propose a facile modulation strategy of in situ cathodic activation of FePx based on W-incorporation (W-FePx/IF) for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The activated W-FeOx with obvious surface reconstruction demonstrates the role of W-incorporation for driving the cathodic activation of FePx, which suggests the larger surface area and more active sites. selleck kinase inhibitor In fact, W incorporation can not only accelerate the cathodic activation process but also act as the adsorption sites for Had to form the synergistic effect with FeOx for water dissociation. The obtained W-FeOx/IF exhibits greatly enhanced HER activity featuring decreased overpotential from 237.7 to 154.0 mV at 100 mA cm-2, which may be ascribed to W-FeOx with double catalytic active sites after cathodic activation. Additionally, the modulation effects of cathodic activation can be exactly achieved by changing electrochemical parameters such as CV cycles. W-FeOx/IF also shows excellent long-term stability for at least 100 h at 100 mA cm-2. This modulation engineering based on metal doping is expected to provide inspiration for the understanding of the cathodic activation process for efficient electrocatalysts. The drive for a simultaneous analysis of multiple targets with excellent accuracy and efficiency, which is often required in both basic biomedical research and clinical applications, demands the development of multiplexed bioassays with desired throughput. With the development of nanotechnologies, innovative multiplex optical bioassays have been achieved. Nanomaterials exhibit unique physical and chemical properties such as easily tunable size, large surface-to-volume ratio, excellent catalysis and the desired signal transduction mechanism, which makes them excellent candidates for the fabrication of novel optical nanoprobes. This mini review summarizes nanomaterial-based optical multiplex sensors from the last 5 years. Specific optical techniques covered in this review are fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), chemiluminescence (CL), and the multimodality with fundamentals and examples.Exposure to plasma can significantly increase the surface area of silver species and their resistance to oxidation. While some work investigating plasma-treated silver has been done, limited morphologies and applications have been explored. We hereby explore this effect on silver nanowires (AgNWs) through medium-vacuum air plasma exposure time ranging between 30 s to 60 min. These plasma-treated AgNW networks are directly applied as supercapacitor electrodes, without any carbon or polymer additives that are typically employed alongside silver in energy storage applications. The plasma treatment consequently affected the electrochemical performance of AgNWs, where longer treatment times resulted in higher energy storage capacity. An increase in resistance was observed for plasma treatment times greater than or equal to 5 min, due to the switch from the percolation threshold of the metallic Ag phase to the Ag2O phase. Despite an initial drop in stored energy, an overall improvement in energy storage capacity was observed throughout cycling, where the optimal plasma treatment time of 5 min resulted in an increase of 320% of its starting value with near 100% coulombic efficiency, through the development of stable redox-active surface nanostructures.Covering up to the end of 2019The application of coupled gas chromatography/direct deposition Fourier transform infrared (GC/DD-FTIR) spectroscopy in the field of volatile natural product identification yields orthogonal information to GC/MS analysis about functional groups and C-C double bonds. link2 This underused method facilitates structure elucidation of trace compounds and can be combined with modern DFT-calculation to further improve the usefulness of the obtained results.Pulsed laser (ms, 1064 nm) gold nanoparticle (GNP) heating has been used recently to achieve fast (>10 000 000 °C min-1) warming of vitrified droplets using gold nanorods (GNRs) as photon-absorbers. To maximize the viability of biomaterials in vitrified droplets, the droplets must be warmed as uniformly as possible. A potential approach to such warming is to use an appropriate combination of photon-absorption and -scattering to distribute heat more uniformly throughout a droplet. To investigate this, 2 plasmonic gold nanorods (GNRs), 1 hollow gold nanoshell, and 2 silica-core gold nanoshells (GNSs) were synthesized and characterized under 1064 nm laser irradiation in water, propylene glycol, and protein-rich (egg white) solutions. Using a modified cuvette laser calorimetry experiment with complementary Monte Carlo modeling, the GNSs were found to have higher per-particle absorption and scattering cross sections, while the GNRs had higher photothermal conversion efficiency, absorption efficiency, and Au mass nlso show that the relative scattering and absorption properties of the nanoparticles can be designed to promote both rapid and uniform laser rewarming of vitrified droplets for application in cryopreservation.Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are major sources of oxidative stress playing prominent roles in the development of several pathologies including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases or cancers. The presence of transition biometal ions, specifically copper and iron, induces ROS formation by catalyzing the reduction of molecular oxygen to superoxide anion (O2˙-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl (HO˙) radical. To limit ROS production and their detrimental effects, we report on the synthesis, physicochemical studies and antioxidant assays of an innovative series of synthetic pentapeptides exhibiting a dual direct/indirect mode of action, both as iron(iii)-chelators and as radical scavengers. These combined effects lead to a drastic reduction of in vitro reactive oxygen species production up to 95% for the more reactive hydroxyl radical.A combined computational and experimental approach demonstrates the accelerating role of deaggregation agents, especially HMPA, in the Li-catalysed hydrosilylation of acetophenone in THF solution under very mild conditions. The vacancy defects of semiconductor photocatalysts play key roles in enhancing their photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity. In this work, CeO2 was chosen as a model catalyst and oxygen vacancies were introduced on its surface by a facile and mild oxalic acid treatment followed by moderate heating in N2. Such a treatment resulted in a much increased ratio of Ce3+/Ce4+ in CeO2, and the oxygen vacancy-enriched CeO2 showed remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity in CO2 reduction, with CO being the dominant reduction product, whose yield was about 8 times that on the pristine CeO2. In situ FT-IR spectra showed that the abundant oxygen vacancies substantially improved the CO2 adsorption/activation on the surface of CeO2, which facilitated the subsequent reduction of CO2. However, the carbonates strongly adsorbed on the photocatalyst surface might be the main obstacle to maintaining the high CO2 reduction activity and stability of CeO2 with O vacancies. We investigated self-propelled rotation of a symmetric three-bladed rotor on water under periodic halt and release operations. The rotation was driven by the difference in the surface tension around the blades of the rotor because camphor molecules developed from three camphor disks glued at the blade ends. Spontaneous inversion of rotation direction was observed after a forced stop of the rotor and the subsequent release. The probability of such inversion decreased with an increase in the halting time. The asymmetric distribution of camphor molecules around the blades was also inverted after the forced stop and the degree of asymmetry increased with an increase in the angular velocity characterizing the stationary rotation of the rotor. Our experimental results for rotors with different shapes indicate that there is a strong correlation between the stationary angular velocity of the rotor and the maximum time duration of the forced stop for which a high probability of inversion is observed. We report here the formation of self-assembled supramolecular polymers in which the cooperative action of anti-electrostatic anion-anion and halogen-bonding interactions serve as a powerful driving force for the formation of large supramolecular polymers. DOSY-NMR, DLS, TEM, SEM and X-ray experiments provide evidence of the formation of supramolecular structures in solution and solid state. It's a huge challenge to develop effective nanosystems that combine the capabilities of diagnoses and therapies together for colon cancer in the clinic. link3 Herein, we constructed a far-red absorbing phototheranostic nanosystem (FR-H2S) based on the thiolytic reaction of a dinitrophenyl modified phototheranostic prodrug and over-expressed H2S in colon cancer sites for precise imaging-guided phototherapy. FR-H2S with a BODIPY core not only could work as an imaging probe for diagnosis but also act as a phototherapeutic agent for cancer treatment under a single FR laser source (650 nm). FR-H2S exhibited a gradually enhanced fluorescence emission for precise diagnosis of H2S-rich colon tumor sites. After entering tumor cells, FR-H2S could generate abundant 1O2 and heat for phototherapies timely by using the same laser source (650 nm). We believe that this precise imaging-guided phototheranostic nanosystem could provide a promising approach to colon cancer with minimal damage. The transfer of a β-hydrogen from a metal-alkyl group to ethylene is a fundamental organometallic transformation. Previously proposed mechanisms for this transformation involve either a two-step β-hydrogen elimination and migratory insertion sequence with a metal hydride intermediate or a one-step concerted pathway. Here, we report density functional theory (DFT) quasiclassical direct dynamics trajectories that reveal new dynamical mechanisms for the β-hydrogen transfer of [Cp*RhIII(Et)(ethylene)]+. Despite the DFT energy landscape showing a two-step mechanism with a Rh-H intermediate, quasiclassical trajectories commencing from the β-hydrogen elimination transition state revealed complete dynamical skipping of this intermediate. The skipping occurred either extremely fast (typically less then 100 femtoseconds (fs)) through a dynamically ballistic mechanism or slower through a dynamically unrelaxed mechanism. Consistent with trajectories begun at the transition state, all trajectories initiated at the Rh-H intermediate show continuation along the reaction coordinate.
