During the deconfinement period after the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the number and characteristics of psychiatric visits changed in our emergency department (ED). We aimed to assess changes in the number of visits and characterize the profiles of these patients.

In this retrospective observational study, we examined the number of psychiatric ED visits and their proportion among the total number of ED visits. We also evaluated psychiatric visits characteristics during a one-month period after the declaration of deconfinement, and we compared those characteristics to characteristics observed during the same month over the previous 4 years.

The number of psychiatric visits to our emergency department during deconfinement was similar to the number observed in the same month of previous years. However, the proportion of psychiatric visits to our emergency department among all visits to the ED rose during deconfinement to a level never before observed. The mean proportion of psychiatric admissions to all ED admissions rose from 3.5% in past years to 5.3% during deconfinement (p = 0.013). Moreover, during deconfinement, more visits (80%) were without an acute intoxication compared to past years (58.5%; p = 0.031). Also, in the deconfinement period, more visits lacked a follow-up consultation organized at discharge (40%) compared to the historical period (25%, p = 0.036).

The deconfinement period after the first wave COVID-19 changed the number and type of psychiatric emergency medicine consultations at our hospital, suggesting a psychiatric impact of confinement during this pandemic. These findings will be of interest to practitioners and politicians in the coming months.

Protocol driven ED observation units (EDOU) have been shown to improve outcomes for patients and payers, however their impact on an entire health system is unknown. Two thirds of US hospitals do not have such units.

To determine the impact of a protocol-driven EDOU on health system length of stay, cost, and resource utilization.

A retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study of observation patients managed over 25 consecutive months in a four-hospital academic health system. Patients were identified using the "admit to observation" order and limited to adult, emergent / urgent, non-obstetric patients. Data was retrieved from a cost accounting database. The primary study exposure was the setting for observation care which was broken into three discrete groups EDOUs (n = 3), hospital medicine observation units (HMSOU, n = 2), and a non-observation unit (NOU) bed located anywhere in the hospital. Outcomes included observation-to-inpatient admission rate, length of stay (LoS), total direct cost, and s were associated with improved resource utilization and reduced cost. This represents a significant opportunity for hospitals to improve efficiency and contain costs.

To evaluate the difference in liver density and to compare the performance to diagnose fatty liver between true noncontrast (TNC) images and virtual noncontrast (VNC) images generated from dual-energy CT (DECT).

Patients who underwent liver dynamic DECT and MRI were included (n = 49). Two observers measured the liver and spleen densities on TNC images and three VNC images from the arterial, portal and delayed phases of DECT (VNCa, VNCp and VNCd, respectively). The liver-minus-spleen density (density L-S) and liver-to-spleen ratio (density L/S) were calculated. The CT parameters were compared between normal liver patients and fatty liver patients by using the independent t-test. Differences and agreements between measurements on TNC images and VNC images were evaluated by using the paired t-test and Bland-Altman analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of CT parameters for diagnosing fatty liver.

All CT parameters measured on TNC and VNC images were significantly higher in normal liver patients than in fatty liver patients. Although the mean liver densities on VNC images were significantly lower than those on TNC images, all CT parameters showed good agreement between TNC images and VNC images. The diagnostic performances of CT parameters on VNC images were not significantly different from those on TNC images.

The objective of this retrospective single centre study was to evaluate the impact of intraprocedural cone-beam CT with parenchymal blood volume assessment (PBV-CBCT) for guidance of transarterial chemoembolization with drug-eluting beads (DEB-TACE) in HCC patients on the effectiveness (local tumour response, survival and number of individual TACE sessions) compared to guidance solely by digital subtraction angiography (DSA).

n = 179 HCC patients (mean age, 77.4 y) undergoing DEB-TACE, with (n = 28) and without (n = 151) PBV-CBCT, using 100-300 μm microspheres loaded with epirubicin were retrospectively analysed. Tumour response according to mRECIST, overall survival and number of TACE interventions as well as laboratory parameters for liver function and inflammation were recorded. The analysis of the influence of intraprocedural PBV-CBCT was based on matched pair analysis (CBCT n = 28 vs. DSA n = 28). Gender, tumour number, tumour size and HCC risk factors were equally distributed between both groups.

To evaluate the application of neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) to brain glioma-induced corticospinal tract (CST) injury.

Twenty-four patients with high-grade glioma (HGG) in or adjacent to the CST pathway and 12 matched healthy subjects underwent structural and diffusion MRI. The CSTs were reconstructed on the both sides. The CST features including morphological features (track number, average track length and track volume) and the diffusion parameter values including fractional anisotraphy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), intracellular volume fraction (ICVF), isotropic or free water volume fraction (ISOVF) and orientation dispersion index (ODI) along the CST were calculated. The CST features were compared between the affected and healthy side for HGG patients and between the left and right side for healthy subjects. The relative CST features were compared across the healthy subjects, patients with motor weakness and patients with normal muscle strength. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation training to support the development of students' interprofessional communication and teamwork skills. Study participants were first-year students. A mixed methods study design was used that included (1) a cross-sectional survey, (using the Interprofessional Education Collaborative Competency Self-Assessment tool), before and after the simulation session; and (2) two focus groups with students and one with academic staff. A total of 91 students and 5 staff participated. All students increased their self-perceived skills in interprofessional interactions. Two major themes were identified 'Communication and Teamwork', with four sub-themes, (1) 'Significance of Communication in teamwork'; (2) 'Learning about, from and with each other'; (3) 'Professional role identification and collaborative practice'; and (4) 'Clinical leadership facilitated collaboration' and 'Lessons learnt from the simulation session', with three subthemes (1) 'enhanced preparation for clinical placement'; (2) 'the experience of interacting with a simulated patient'; and (3) 'holistic patient care'. The results from the study demonstrated that interprofessional simulation sessions are an effective approach to introducing and developing collaborative clinical practice.Children with chronic illnesses have improved physiological and psychosocial outcomes when they are able to identify and converse with others who experience the same challenges. This review aimed to explore the impact of ageing simulation for healthcare professional education to promote person-centred care towards older people.

Ageing simulation is an emerging educational approach to facilitate the learning of healthcare professionals on ageing and older people. However, there is limited evidence available exploring its use and impact on the person-centred care of older people.

An integrative review approach was used.

Four databases were searched from January 2010 to April 2020 including CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science and PsychINFO, 21 papers were identified and analysed.

Three interrelating themes were identified to outline the findings across the reviewed studies ageing simulation use (theme 1), characteristics (theme 2) and impact (theme 3). Results showed literature available on ageing simulation is varied, ranged in study quality and applied several ageing simulation iterations making comparisons across the studies difficult.

Despite these challenges it was clear ageing simulation is a promising educational approach currently being used to promote person-centred care for older people in healthcare professionals.
