Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obesity are prevalent among U.S. military veterans, though less is known about the mental and physical health burden and suicidality of co-occurring PTSD and obesity in this population. A nationally representative sample of the U.S. veterans was used to assess PTSD and obesity prevalence, co-occurrence and relationships with mental and physical health measures. A total of 16.4% of veterans screened positive for current PTSD, 32.7% for obesity, and 5.8% for co-occurring PTSD and obesity. Relative to obesity-only veterans, veterans with co-occurring PTSD and obesity had elevated likelihoods of mental and physical health concerns (most notably major depressive and generalized anxiety disorders), suicidality, and migraine headaches, and higher body mass indices. Relative to veterans with PTSD alone, individuals with comorbid PTSD and obesity had elevated likelihoods of suicidal ideation, nicotine dependence, mental health treatment, migraine headaches, diabetes, hypertension, and insomnia. A significant minority of U.S. veterans has co-occurring PTSD and obesity, which is associated with substantial mental and physical health burden, including elevated suicidality. Results underscore the importance of integrative assessment, monitoring, and treatment approaches for PTSD and obesity in this population.
The treatment of ketamine users is substantially challenged by high dropout rates, raising questions regarding contributing factors. A number of studies have highlighted the potential of greater focus on the clinical significance of cognitive impairments in ketamine users. The present study hypothesized that cognitive deficits would play a role in greater risk for treatment dropout in chronic ketamine users.

Our study examined cognitive performance in the form of working memory, verbal memory, visual memory and executive function among chronic ketamine users who completed three-month treatment in residential detoxification centres (N=165), those who dropped out prematurely (N=121) and drug-free healthy controls (N=111). The data collection was completed in Hong Kong among the East Asia population.

Compared to healthy controls, cognitive impairments were found in ketamine users, including in verbal/visual memory and executive function. Executive dysfunction was significantly associated with dropout in ketamine users within three months.

Effective management of water bodies requires advancing our understanding of how flow influences biofilm-bound sediment and ecosystem processes and vice-versa. However, research on this triangle of flow-biofilm-sediment is still at its infancy. In this Review, we summarize the current state of the art and methodological approaches in the flow-biofilm-sediment research with an emphasis on biostabilization and fine sediment dynamics mainly in the benthic zone of lotic and lentic environments. Example studies of this three-way interaction across a range of spatial scales from cell (nm - µm) to patch scale (mm - dm) are highlighted in view of the urgent need for interdisciplinary approaches. As a contribution to the review, we combine a literature survey with results of a pilot experiment tfilm growth as well as mass and momentum flux exchanges between biofilm and water. Use molecular approaches (DNA, pigments, staining, microscopy) for sophisticated community analyses. Link varying flow regimes to microbial communities (and processes) and fine sediment properties to explore the role of key microbial players and functions in enhancing sediment stability (biostabilization). iii) Link laboratory-scale observations to larger scales relevant for management of water bodies. Conduct field experiments to better understand the complex effects of variable flow and sediment regimes on biostabilization. Employ scalable and informative observation techniques (e.g., hyperspectral imaging, particle tracking) that can support predictions on the functional aspects, such as metabolic activity, bed stability, nutrient fluxes under variable regimes of flow-biofilm-sediment.Light-emitting diode (LED) is environmentally friendly with longer life compared with traditionally mercury lamps. This study investigated the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)- phenacetin (PNT) and acetaminophen (ACT)- removal during LED-UV (365 nm) photolysis of free available chlorine (FAC). Degradation of PNT and ACT during LED-UV365/FAC treatment at pH 5.5-8.5 followed the pseudo-first order kinetics. The presence of hydroxyl radicals (·OH), reactive chlorine species (RCS), and ozone (O3, transformed from O (3P)) were screened by using scavengers of ethanol (EtOH), tert-Butanol (TBA), and 3-buten-2ol, and 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMP), and quantified by competition kinetics with probing compounds of nitrobenzene (NB), benzoate acid (BA), 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (DMOB). Higher pH would lead to decrease of ·OH contribution and an increase of FAC contribution to PNT and ACT degradation. It has been determined that the contribution of O3 to degradation of PNT and ACT was less than 5% for all pHs, and O3(P) reacts toward EtOH with second-order constant of 1.52 × 109 M-1s-1. LED-UV365/FAC system reduced the formation of five typical CX3-R type disinfection by-products (DBPs) as well as the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of water samples at pH 5.5 and 8.5, compared with FAC alone. The decrease of DBPs formation resulted from fast FAC decomposition upon LED-UV365 irradiation. A feasible reaction pathway of DBPs formation in the LED-UV365/FAC system was examined with density functional theory (DFT). For FAC decay during LED-UV365/FAC with effluent from wastewater, the residual FAC in 15 min was 0.8 mg/L (lower than limit of 0.2 mg/L) once initial FAC was 2.0 mg/L. The results indicate that more tests on the balance of target pollutant removal efficiency, residual FAC and cost should be explored in LED-UV365/FAC system for application.Although Fe(II) salts have been widely used as coagulants in water treatment for many years, the underlying mechanisms of their performance remain unclear. Here, we present a detailed study of the coagulation behavior of Fe(II) salts and crystallization of flocs, and investigate the effect of humic acid (HA) under different DO concentrations and pH conditions. The behavior of Fe(II) and Fe(III) coagulants was found to be markedly different with the flocs from Fe(II) consisting of planar-like crystalline γ-FeOOH in contrast to the small amorphous spherical-like flocs from Fe(III) dosing. The effect of HA on Fe(II) coagulation was different under different DO concentrations and pH, where by the growth of γ-FeOOH was inhibited by the presence of HA, but independent of DO concentration and pH. It was found that Fe(II) was present within the internal structure of γ-FeOOH, and a plausible formation mechanism is proposed. Firstly, planar nanoparticles of Fe(OH)2 were formed via Fe(II) ion hydrolysis which then servedas the nucleus for subsequent crystal growth. With oxidation, Fe(II) on the surface of nanoparticles transformed to Fe(III). Finally, the formation of γ-FeOOH in Fe(II) coagulation was accompanied by a change in solution colour to yellow.Biochar is widely and increasingly applied to farmlands. However, it remains unclear how long-term biochar addition alters the characteristics and chlorine reactivity of soil-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM), an important terrestrial disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursor in watersheds. Here, we analyzed the spectroscopic and molecular-level characteristics of soil-derived DOM and the formation and toxicity of DBP mixtures from DOM chlorination for two long-term (5 and 11 years) biochar addition experimental farmlands. As indicated by spectroscopic indices and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry analyses, 11 years of biochar addition could increase the humic-like and aromatic and condensed aromatic DOM and decrease the microbial-derived DOM, while 5 years of biochar addition at the other site did not. The response of condensed aromatic dissolved black carbon did not increase with increasing cumulative biochar dose but appeared to be affected by biochar aging time. Despite the possible increase in aromatic DOM, biochar addition neither increased the reactivity of DOM in forming trihalomethanes, haloacetonitriles, chloral hydrates, or haloketones nor significantly increased the microtoxicity or genotoxicity of the DBP mixture. This study indicates that biochar addition in watersheds may not deteriorate the drinking water quality via the export of terrestrial DBP precursors like wildfire events.Two pairs of new sesquineolignan enantiomers (1a/1b and 1c/1d), two pair of new 4',7-epoxy-8,3'-neolignan enantiomers (2a/2b and 3a/3b), and a pair of new 3',7-epoxy-8,4'-oxyneolignan enantiomers (4a/4b), along with two pairs of known 4',7-epoxy-8,3'-neolignan enantiomers (5a/5b and 6a/6b), were obtained from the stems and leaves of Triadica sebifera. The structures of the enantiomers were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses, and their absolute configurations were assigned by the experimental ECD spectra. Among them, compounds 5b, 6a and 6b showed inhibitory activities against NO production in activated microglial BV-2 cells, with IC50 values of 14.3, 23.2 and 33.3 μM, respectively.In an effort to develop a potent anti-malarial agent against Plasmodium falciparum, a structure-guided virtual screening using an in-house library comprising 652 compounds was performed. By docking studies, we identified two compounds (JMI-105 and JMI-346) which formed significant non-covalent interactions and fit well in the binding pocket of PfFP-2. We affirmed this observation by MD simulation studies. As evident by the biochemical analysis, such as enzyme inhibition assay, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), live-cell imaging and hemozoin inhibition, JMI-105 and JMI-346 at 25 µM concentration showed an inhibitory effect on purified PfFP-2. JMI-105 and JMI-346 inhibited the growth of CQS (3D7; IC50 = 8.8 and 13 µM) and CQR (RKL-9; IC50 = 14.3 and 33 µM) strains of P. falciparum. Treatment with compounds resulted in defect in parasite growth and development. Crizotinib concentration No significant hemolysis or cytotoxicity towards human cells was observed suggesting that these molecules are non-toxic. We pursued, structural optimization on JMI-105 and in the process, SAR oriented derivatives (5a-5l) were synthesized and evaluated for growth inhibition potential. JMI-105 significantly decreased parasitemia and prolonged host survival in a murine model with P. berghei ANKA infection. The compounds (JMI-105 and JMI-346) against PfFP-2 have the potential to be used as an anti-malarial agent.
