The non-motor symptoms (NMSs) of Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impact the patient's health-related quality of life. This subanalysis of the J-FIRST study evaluated the effect of istradefylline, a selective adenosine A
receptor antagonist, on NMSs in istradefylline-naïve Japanese patients with PD.
Patients with PD and ≥1 NMS and 'wearing-off' with their current antiparkinsonian treatment were observed for up to 52 weeks. The effect of istradefylline on NMSs was measured in terms of changes in the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) Part 1 total, individual sub-items scores and the 8 item PD questionnaire (PDQ-8) estimated by the marginal structural model.
Overall, 732 patients were istradefylline-naïve prior to the study, of whom 171 were treated with istradefylline for ≥8 weeks during the observation period (istradefylline-treated patients). At baseline, istradefylline-treated patients were more likely to have a dyskinesia (49.7% vs 40.8%) and receivD, without worsening existing NMSs.

To validate recently proposed diagnostic criteria for blepharospasm in a larger and geographically diverse population and to develop a screening system for blepharospasm.
Video-recordings from 211 blepharospasm patients and 166 healthy/disease controls were examined by 8 raters. Agreement for presence of orbicularis oculi spasms, sensory trick, and increased blinking was measured by k statistics. Inability to voluntarily suppress the spasms was asked by the examiner but not captured in the video. Patients/controls were also requested to fill a self-administered questionnaire addressing relevant blepharospasm clinical aspects. The diagnosis at each site was the gold standard for sensitivity/specificity.
All the study items yielded satisfactory inter/intra-observer agreement. Combination of items rather than each item alone reached satisfactory sensitivity/specificity. The combined algorithm started with recognition of spasms ation of all subjects.
Corona-virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a huge impact on the delivery of healthcare worldwide, particularly elective surgery. There is a lack of data regarding risk of postoperative COVID-19 infection in children undergoing elective surgery, and regarding the utility of pre-operative COVID-19 testing, and preoperative "cocooning" or restriction of movements. The purpose of this present study was to examine the safety of elective paediatric Otolaryngology surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic with respect to incidence of postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 infection or major respiratory complications.
Prospective cohort study of paediatric patients undergoing elective Otolaryngology surgery between September and December 2020. Primary outcome measure was incidence of symptomatic COVID-19 or major respiratory complications within the 14 days after surgery. Parents of prospectively enrolled patients were contacted 14 days after surgery and enquiry made regarding development of postoperative symptoms, COVID-19 testing, or diagnosis of COVID-19.
302 patients were recruited. 125 (41.4%) underwent preoperative COVID-19 RT-PCR testing. 66 (21.8%) restricted movements prior to surgery. The peak 14-day COVID-19 incidence during the study was 302.9 cases per 100,000 population. No COVID-19 infections or major respiratory complications were reported in the 14 day follow-up period.

Children with abusive injuries have worse mortality, length-of-stay, complications, and healthcare costs compared to those sustaining an accidental injury. Long-term functional impairment is common in children with abusive head trauma but has not been examined in a cohort with heterogeneous body region injuries.
To assess for an independent association between child physical abuse and functional impairment at discharge and six-month follow-up.

Functional status was compared between child physical abuse and accidental injury groups at discharge and six-month follow-up. Functional impairment was defined at discharge ("new domain morbidity") as a change from pre-injury ≥2 points in any of the six domains of the Functional Status Scale (FSS), and impairment at six-month follow-up as an abnormal total FSS score.
Children with abusive injuries accounted for 10.5% (n=45) of the cohort. New domain morbidity was present in 17.8% (n=8) of child physical abuse patients at discharge, with 10% (n=3) of children having an abnormal FSS at six-months. There were no differences in new domain morbidity at hospital discharge between children injured by abuse and or accidental injury. However, children injured by physical abuse were 4.09 (2.15, 7.78) times more likely to have functional impairment at six months.
Child physical abuse is an independent risk factor for functional impairment at six-month follow-up. Functional status measurement for this high-risk group of children should be routinely measured and incorporated into trauma center quality assessments.

However, a considerable number of micro-cracks will gradually appear on the surface of passivation film under long-term corrosion of oxidizing medium, resulting in a significant decrease of passivation effect. To improve the stability and long-term performance of organosilane coating, a novel passivator (PT-ATP@HQ) with self-healing function was prepared to inhibit the oxidation of pyrite. We chose 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (Prop-SH) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as the host coating (PT), and attapulgite clay (ATP) loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) was used to endow the coating with better passivation and self-healing performance. The electrochemical and chemical leaching results showed that the addition of ATP@HQ greatly improved the passivation performance of PT coating. The passivation efficiencies of total Fe and SO42- reached to 88.1% and 79.2%, respectively. We also found that the protective capability of the scratched PT-ATP@HQ coating can be recovered automatically through 8-HQ release from ATP. The passivation and self-healing mechanisms were investigated by FT-IR, XPS, 29Si NMR, and other characterization methods, which were as follows firstly, the organosilanes hydrolyzed to form highly active silanol groups, then dehydration condensation reaction occurred between silanol molecules and ATP@HQ to obtain cross-linked network structure connected by Si-O-Si bonds. After that, Si-OH groups reacted with the hydroxyl groups of pyrite to form Fe-O-Si bonds, thereby an inert and dense passivation film attached to the surface of pyrite. Once the passivation film is locally damaged, 8-HQ will automatically release to repair the cracks.The high toxicity of Cr-Ca compounds generated during the heat treatment of solid waste will heavily threat the environment. In this work, a kind of Ca-rich river sludge which is bound with Ca and heavy metals was combusted with kaolin under 900 °C for 3 h in a muffle to study the transformation of Cr. The effects of kaolin on Cr transformation were investigated through sequential extraction, the risk assessment of heavy metals, and constant pH leaching test, also combined with crystal phase analysis of Ca-Al-Si minerals. For this aim, a polyurethane sponge was coated with carbon black (CB), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)@Fe3O4, and acrylic resin and then characterized by different techniques. Owing to the chemical and thermal stability of h-BN and CB, the modified sponge was stable under corrosive conditions (pH = 1-14 and salt solutions) and at different temperatures (-12 °C-105 °C). In addition to common oils and organic solvents, we also used the real spilled oils containing monoaromatics and polyaromatics in the water surfaces of the Persian Gulf for investigation of adsorption efficiency of sponge in a real condition. The oil adsorption capacity of this sponge was in the range of 64-176 g g-1. Also, this adsorbent can separate high amount of oil or organic solvents up to 66,400 times of its own weight from the oil-water mixture in a continuous separation. The results confirm that modified sponge can be used more than 20 times for oil spill cleanup without considerable reduction of its adsorption capacity. Consequently, the modified sponge is a promising candidate material for use in a real oil-water separation process.Exploring highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst for the elimination organic pollutants is a great concern for constructing sustainable green energy systems. In the current work, a novel hybrid ternary WO3@g-C3N4@MWCNT nanocomposites have been fabricated for visible-light-driven photocatalyst by self-assembly method. The as-prepared photocatalyst was examined by XRD, Raman, FESEM, HRTEM, XPS EDS, EIS, UV-visible DRS, and PL analysis. The experimental results revealed that the photocatalytic activity of WO3@g-C3N4@MWCNT nanocomposites on the degradation of Tetracycline (TC) is 79.54% at 120 min, which is higher than the binary WO3@g-C3N4 composite and pristine WO3. The improved degradation performance towards TC is recognized for its higher surface area, intense light absorption towards the visible region, and enhanced charge separation efficiency. Consequently, the fabricated catalyst endows a promising application for antibiotic degradation.
