This paper was aimed at reviewing recent studies related with the impact on environment and human health of metals and PCDD/Fs near cement plants. It has been particularly focused on the impact of cement plants located in Catalonia, Spain, which have been monitored by our research for more than ten years. Environmental monitoring studies were performed under different cement plant conditions. While some of our studies examined temporal trends of the levels of the above indicated pollutants, the main goal of other surveys was to assess the impact of implementing alternative fuels in the facilities. Even one of the studies was performed before and after the cement plant temporally ceased its industrial activity. The impact of cement plants burning alternative fuels on the emissions of metals and PCDD/Fs elsewhere was also reviewed. Regarding the cement plants in Catalonia, no significant differences were found, neither in the long-term follow-up studies, nor when alternative fuels are used, nor when a cement plant temporally stopped its activity. These results are in agreement with those reported for several stack emissions of other cement plants working under different conditions. We conclude that emissions of metals and PCDD/Fs by cement plants working with the best available techniques (BAT), should not cause a significant negative impact neither on the surrounding environment, nor on the human health of the population living in the neighborhood.
The prognostic value of point-of-care lung ultrasound has not been evaluated in a large cohort of patients with COVID-19 admitted to general medicine ward in the United States. The aim of this study was to describe lung ultrasound findings and their prognostic value in patients with COVID-19 admitted to internal medicine ward.

This prospective observational study consecutively enrolled 105 hospitalized participants with COVID-19 at 2 tertiary care centers. Ultrasound was performed in 12 lung zones within 24 hours of admission. Findings were assessed relative to 4 outcomes intensive care unit (ICU) need, need for intensive respiratory support, length of stay, and death.

We detected abnormalities in 92% (97/105) of participants. The common findings were confluent B-lines (92%), non-homogenous pleural lines (78%), and consolidations (54%). Large confluent B-lines, consolidations, bilateral involvement, and any abnormality in ≥ 6 areas were associated with a longer hospitalization and need for intensive resassociated with worse clinical outcomes except death. A low total lung ultrasound score ( less then 5) had a negative predictive value of 100% for the need of intensive respiratory support. Point-of-care ultrasound can aid in the risk stratification for patients with COVID-19 admitted to general wards. The slowly activating delayed rectifier K+ current (IKs) plays a key role in the repolarization of ventricular action potential in the human heart and is formed by the pore-forming α-subunit encoded by KCNQ1 (Kv7.1) and β-subunit encoded by KCNE1. Evidence suggested that IKs was regulated through protein kinase C (PKC) pathway, but the mechanism is controversial. This study was designed to identify the specific PKC isoform involved in the long-term regulation of IKs current. The IKs current was recorded using whole-cell patch-clamp technique in human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293B cell co-transfected with human KCNQ1/KCNE1 genes. The results revealed that both chronic activation of Ang II and PMA reduced the IKs current in a long-term regulation (about 24 hours). Further evidence showed that PKCε knockdown by siRNA antagonized the AngII-induced chronic inhibition on the IKs current, whereas knockdown of cPKC (PKCα and PKCβ) attenuated the inhibition effect of PMA on the current. Moreover, the forward transport inhibition of the channel with brefeldin A alleviated the Ang II-induced chronic inhibition on IKs current, while the channel endocytosis inhibition with dynasore alleviated both Ang II and PMA-induced chronic inhibition on IKs current. The above results showed that PKCε activation promoted the channel endocytosis and inhibited the channel forward transport to the plasma membrane, while cPKC activation only promoted the channel endocytosis, which both down regulated the channel current.A 19-year-old boy presented with signs of a granulomatous lung disease. Sputum testing for tuberculosis was negative. After a year, he returned with generalised lymphadenopathy. Though a clinical diagnosis of tuberculosis was then made and treatment was commenced, a lymph node biopsy revealed Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We are not aware of any other such case described in the Pacific. The effects of polyaspartic acid and different controlled-release fertilizers with urea on dry matter accumulation and distribution, nitrogen absorption and accumulation, and the activities of enzymes involved nitrogen metabolism and yield of corn were studied by using xianyu (XY688), a maize nitrogen efficient cultivar, and Jifeng NO.2 (JF2), a maize nitrogen-inefficient cultivar, as experimental materials and through random blocks experimental design in 2019. For XY688, polyaspartic acid chelated nitrogen fertilizer (PASPN) had the highest yield, which was 21.34% higher than N0 treatment. For JF2, it also had the highest yield under PASPN combined urea treatment, which was 23.44% higher than N0 (no nitrogen fertilizer), and JF2 had a 9.7% lower yield under XY688 treatment. For XY688, PASPN treatment had the largest nitrogen uptake in grain, up to 3.14 kg/hm2, and PASPN treatment increased 17.4% compared with N0. For JF2, grain nitrogen uptake was also the highest under PASPN treatment, which was significantly different from other treatments. Nitrogen uptake was 3.16 kg/hm2, which increased 37.4% compared with N0. Compared with JF2, XY688 showed higher nitrogen uptake efficiency, nitrogen utilization efficiency, and partial nitrogen productivity. For XY688, the highest nitrogen absorption efficiency was SU3 (slow-release urea and ordinary urea) treatment (0.36 kg/kg). The partial nitrogen productivity and harvest index of PASPN treatment were the highest and significantly different from other treatments. The partial nitrogen productivity of PASPN treatment was 57.02 kg/kg. These results can provide help for the further researches of the rational utilization and absorption of nitrogen fertilizer.Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may interact with the host brain and play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the mechanism underlying reciprocal interactions along the microbiota-gut-brain axis in depression remains unclear. In this study, a murine model of chronic restraint stress (CRS) was established to investigate the metabolic signaling of tryptophan (Trp) neurotransmission at the intestinal and central levels in depression. The results showed that CRS mice displayed depression- and anxiety-like behaviors. Additionally, kynurenine (Kyn) and its metabolites, an important Trp metabolic pathway, were strongly activated in the brain. Intriguingly, the Kyn toxic signaling was exacerbated in the gut, especially in the colon. Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), a rate-limiting enzyme responsible for Kyn metabolic pathway initiation, was significantly upregulated in the brain and gut in CRS mice compared with control mice, promoting transfer of Trp metabolby the disrupted homeostasis of certain microbiota, which collectively contribute to the development of depression-like behavior.
Throwing-related injuries occur commonly in softball players. Preventative programs can be implemented to assist in identifying and correcting risk factors that could potentially lead to injury and therefore time missed from both practice and games.

The purpose of this study was to determine if position-specific injury prevention programs have been developed to decrease the risk of throwing-related injuries in softball players.

A systematic review was performed using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. PubMed, PMC, and EBSCO were searched for articles on injury prevention programs using the following key terms
, and
.

Studies that involved fast-pitch softball and included female participants as well as rehabilitation programs were included. Articles that highlighted slow-pitch softball or did not include female participants were excluded.

Level 1.

The initial search identified 1605 articles. After implementing a filter, 131 articles remainveloping an injury prevention program.
There is a paucity of information about injury prevention programs for softball players. Of the evidence analyzed, balanced strengthening of the upper and lower extremities while maintaining dynamic range of motion was frequently utilized in developing an injury prevention program. The aim of the present study was to identify the potential risk of circulating-HPV-DNA in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to analyze abnormally expressed miRNAs in circulating HPV-DNA-positive NSCLC. HPV universal primers were used to detect the presence of HPV-DNA in the peripheral blood of 100 patients with NSCLC. The relationship between circulating-HPV-DNA and NSCLC patients characteristics was analyzed. check details Then, eight differentially expressed miRNAs in NSCLC were screened based on the TCGA database. The levels of miRNAs in circulating HPV-DNA-positive NSCLC patients were detected by real-time quantitative PCR. ROC curves were generated to evaluate the diagnostic performance. Circulating-HPV-DNA was found in 16 patients. The proportion of HPV-DNA-positive patients with poorly differentiated NSCLC, advanced lung cancer and lymph node metastasis was higher than that of HPV-DNA-negative patients. The levels of miR-183, miR-210 and miR-182 were significantly higher and miR-144 was significantly lower in HPV-DNA-positive NSCLC than those in HPV-DNA-negative NSCLC patients. When using a single miRNA to identify circulating HPV-DNA-positive NSCLC patients, miR-210 had a higher area under the ROC curve (AUC) than other miRNAs, and its sensitivity and specificity were also higher. In addition, the combination of two miRNAs was more effective than a single miRNA. Among them, miR-210+ miR-144 had the highest AUC value and showed the best prediction performance. Circulating-HPV-DNA may serve as a risk factor in NSCLC. Plasma miR-183, miR-210, miR-182 and miR-144 can be used as reliable biomarkers to identify circulating HPV-DNA-positive NSCLC.Mechanisms of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery are not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate weight loss-independent bacterial and metabolic changes, as well as the absorption of bacterial metabolites and bile acids through the hepatic portal system following RYGB surgery. Three groups of obese Zucker (fa/fa) rats were included RYGB (n = 11), sham surgery and body weight matched with RYGB (Sham-BWM, n = 5), and sham surgery fed ad libitum (Sham-obese, n = 5). Urine and feces were collected at multiple time points, with portal vein and peripheral blood obtained at the end of the study. Metabolic phenotyping approaches and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to determine the biochemical and bacterial composition of the samples, respectively. RYGB surgery-induced distinct metabolic and bacterial disturbances, which were independent of weight loss through caloric restriction. RYGB resulted in lower absorption of phenylalanine and choline, and higher urinary concentrations of host-bacterial co-metabolites (e.
