Sarcopenia patients require more medical attention and caretaking. As such, early detection of sarcopenia and appropriate interventions are crucial for decreasing medical costs and meeting the challenges of aging populations. The aim of the present study was to develop a reliable and accurate model to estimate muscle mass using ultrasound-derived parameters from the rectus femoris (RF), referenced by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.
Cross-sectional study was performed. The study patients were recruited by Taipei Veterans General Hospital (No. 2016-07-013C) between 2016 and 2019. A total of 91 community-dwelling adults (35 men and 56 women) were enrolled in this study. Ultrasound measurements of RF muscle thickness (MT), cross-sectional area (CSA), and muscle volume (MV) were performed in B-mode. Muscle strength and physical performance were also examined. Multivariate linear regression was used to build models for the prediction of appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) based on MT, CSA, and MV values. The accuracy of ultrasound RF measurements for predicting sarcopenia was evaluated by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.
The regression equations used for ASMI prediction (adjusted body mass index, sex, and leg length) had high precision and low error. Moreover, the MV model results were close to those of the CSA model and higher than those of the MT model. The ROC analysis showed that both MV and CSA had excellent discrimination when assessing sarcopenia (AUC=0.83 and 0.81, respectively), whereas MT showed acceptable discrimination (AUC=0.73).

Population-based data on risk factors for suicide attempts among veterans remains limited.
A national probability sample of 2307 veterans was followed over the course of four timepoints spanning seven years to examine how a range of baseline risk factors predict incident suicide attempt. Suicide attempt data were aggregated into a single follow-up timepoint.
Sixty-two veterans (3.1%) reported attempting suicide during the 7-year period. The strongest risk factors for suicide attempts were higher baseline levels of loneliness, lower baseline levels of adaptive psychosocial traits (e.g., dispositional gratitude), baseline thoughts of self-harm, and greater post-baseline trauma exposures (12.3%-41.3% of explained variance). Veterans with multiple co-occurring risk factors were at greatest risk for attempts; of veterans with 0, 1, 2, 3, and all 4 of these factors, the predicted probability of suicide attempt was 2.0%, 5.3%, 13.5%, 30.4%, and 55.0%, respectively.
Baseline loneliness, dispositional gratitude, thoughts of self-harm, and new-onset traumas emerged as the strongest risk factors for suicide attempts among veterans, underscoring the potential importance of targeting these factors in prevention efforts. Veterans with multiple co-occurring risk factors have substantially greater risk for suicide attempts, suggesting that examination of multiple coinciding vulnerability factors may help improve suicide risk prediction models.

They were composed of different monosaccharides and the content of monosaccharides varied significantly while DLP-1 (Mw 1.38 × 106 Da) was mainly composed of mannose (71.69%) and glucose (22.89%), and DLP-2 (Mw 1.93 × 106 Da) was constituted by rhamnose (35.05%), arabinose (24.12%), and galactose (25.65%). A triple-helical conformation was exhibited by both of them. The scanning electron microscope image of DLP-1 showed an irregular and large lamellar shape, as well as a smooth surface and a porous interior, illustrating they had an amorphous structure. In contrast, DLP-2 revealed a rough, loose, and uneven surface consisting of large sponge-like particles. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis showed that (1→4)-β-D-Manp, (1→4)-β-D-Glcp, and (1→4)-2-O-acetyl-β-D-Manp were the main linkage types of DLP-1, whereas DLP-2 was constituted by a large amount of (1→4)-β-D-Manp, (1→4)-β-D-Glcp, and other residues. These results proved that both DLP-1 and DLP-2 possessed excellent immunoregulatory bioactivities and could be functional food or adjuvant drug. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The leaf of Dendrobium officinale is a by-product with huge biomass. The lack of systematic research on its chemical composition and pharmacologic effect, leading to a great waste of resources. In order to maximize the value of D. officinale, this study aimed to investigate the structural characteristics and immunologic effects of two polysaccharide fractions (DLP-1 and DLP-2) from D. officinale leaves, showing that DLP-1 and DLP-2 in D. officinale leaves could be used as anti-inflammatory agents to avoid wasting.

Research shows that screening for social determinants of health is an important part of a child's well visit, noting that awareness of these factors leads to more holistic and improved quality of care. Due to increased precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic and a significant decrease in well-child visits and in-person appointments, there was a marked decrease in the number of face-to-face opportunities for these screenings. In a time of increased need, methods such as telephone screenings represent an opportunity to assess needs and connect patients and families with helpful resources.

Furthermore, our study supports the notion that there are significant and widespread social needs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.Calcar-guided short stems in total hip arthroplasty (THA) permit surgeons to successfully reconstruct postoperative femoroacetabular offset, accurately restore leg length, and adequately re-establish a wide range of caput-collum-diaphyseal angles. However, their effect on femoral antetorsion is less known. Indeed, controlling antetorsion of the femoral stem can be challenging because of the differences in individual femoral geometry and curvature. Therefore, we investigated if calcar-guided short-stem THA alters femoral antetorsion and compared it with conventional-stem THA. Using 12 Thiel-fixed, full-body cadaver specimens from donors without known hip disorders, we compared an uncemented calcar-guided femoral short-stem prosthesis with an uncemented conventional straight-stem prosthesis. In a paired study setup, each specimen received a calcar-guided short stem on one side and a conventional stem on the other. On the acetabular side, all specimens received a press-fit, monobloc acetabular cup. Femoral antetorsion angles were measured using the Waidelich method, and pre- and post-operative angles of both sides were recorded. The mean preoperative femoral antetorsion angles were similar in both groups (24.8° ± 7.5° vs. 23.8° ± 6.1°, p = 0.313). Mean postoperative femoral antetorsion angles were 23.0° ± 5.5° in short-stem and 13.5° ± 7.1° in conventional-stem hips. Short-stem hips had a small but nonsignificant difference in femoral antetorsion angles pre- and post-operatively (1.8° ± 3.2°, p = 0.109), while the difference for conventional-stem hips was much larger and highly significant (10.3° ± 5.8°, p less then 0.001). Calcar-guided short-stem THA effectively restores femoral antetorsion. However, how this affects long-term clinical outcomes and complications warrants further exploration.
