Carbonation seriously deteriorates the durability of existing reinforced concrete structures. In this study, a thermodynamic model is used to investigate the carbonation reactions in cement-based materials. The effects of the concentration and amounts of CO2 on the carbonation behaviors of mortar are discussed. The simulation results show that the mechanisms of the carbonation reaction of cement-based materials at different CO2 concentrations may be different. Nearly all of the hydrate phases have a corresponding CO2 concentration threshold, above which the corresponding carbonation reaction can be triggered. The thresholds of the C-S-H phases with different Ca/Si ratios are different. The calculation results also show that the phase assemblages in cement paste after being completely air-carbonated, primarily consist of a low-Ca/Si ratio C-S-H, strätlingite, CaCO3 and CaSO4. The pH of the pore solution exhibits a significant decrease when a higher Ca/Si ratio C-S-H phase is completely decalcified into a lower Ca/Si ratio C-S-H phase, by increasing the CO2 uptake. Additionally, the experimental results and the previously published investigations are used to validate the simulation results. The mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag fiber composites (ASFC) were investigated with varying volume fractions of PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) fibers. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and alkali-activators were used as the main binders instead of cement, which emits a large amount of carbon dioxide during the manufacturing process. The measured slump flow of ASFC showed a high fluidity at a fiber content of 1.5 vol.% or less. The tensile, flexural, and shear strength of ASFC showed higher values as the amount of fiber increased. Compared to the existing high ductility fiber composites showing strain hardening behaviors with a fiber content of 2.0 vol.%, ASFC proved that it could exhibit high ductility characteristics due to multi-microcracks even at low fiber mixing rates of 1.0% and 1.25%. ASFC could be expected to lower the manufacturing cost with a low fiber content and provide improved workability with high fluidity. In addition, when manufacturing structural components using the developed ASFC, it is expected that the amount of fiber could be selected and used according to the required performance. In this work, a holistic approach for the fabrication of dense Ti6Al4V parts via material extrusion methods (MEX), such as fused filament fabrication (FFF) or fused feedstock deposition (FFD), will be presented. With respect to the requirements of the printing process, a comprehensive investigation of the feedstock development will be described. This covers mainly the amount ratio variation of the main binder components LDPE (low-density polyethylene), HDPE (high-density polyethylene), and wax, characterized by shear and oscillation rheology. Solid content of 60 vol% allowed the 3D printing of even more complex small parts in a reproducible manner. In some cases, the pellet-based FFD seems to be superior to the established FFF. After sintering, a density of 96.6% of theory could be achieved, an additional hot isostatic pressing delivered density values better than 99% of theory. The requirements (mechanical properties, carbon, and oxygen content) for the usage of medical implants (following ASTM F2885-17) were partially fulfilled or shortly missed. This study deals with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of the phase interfaces in the glued joints between Norway spruce wood elements thermally modified at 160, 180, 200, and 220 °C/4 h and polyurethane (PUR) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) glues with the aim of evaluating various anatomical influences of wood on the quality of joints. Due to cracked regions created in the surface of spruce wood at severe thermal modifications, the penetration depth of glues doubled from 140 to 241 μm for PUR glue, and from 100 to 200 μm for PVAc glue. The thickness of glue lines in joints was apparently higher for PVAc glue, mainly in earlywood regions; however, in joints from thermally modified (TM) woods it increased more apparently for PUR glue from 16.6 to 44.4 μm, probably in connection with formation of micro-bubbles in its structure. The SEM analyses corresponded well with the previous knowledge about lower shear strength of glued joints formed from the more intensively TM spruce elements and mentioned types of glues. With the dynamic progress in technology worldwide, the research into new engineering materials applies to a wide range of materials with exciting properties [...].Isothermal-compression tests of B4Cp/6063Al composites containing 20 vol.% B4C were performed using a Gleeble-3500 device, at strain rates ranging from 0.001 s-1 to 1 s-1 and deformation temperatures ranging from 723 K to 823 K. The results showed that the high-temperature flow stress of B4Cp/6063Al composites increases with the decrease in deformation temperature or the increase in the strain rate. After friction correction, the friction corrected stress was less than the original experimental stress. At the initial stage of deformation, the difference between the rheological stress after friction correction and the measured rheological stress is small, but with the continuous increase in the strain, the difference between the rheological stress after friction correction and the measured rheological stress is grows. Under the same strain, the difference between the rheological stress before and after friction correction becomes more significant with the decrease in the deformation temperature and the increase in the strain rate. Next, the material constants (i.e., α, β, Q, A, n) of B4Cp/6063Al composites were calibrated based on the experimental data, and a constitutive equation was established based on Arrhenius theory. The experimental values and predicted values of the stress-strain curves are in good agreement with the stress-strain curves of the finite element simulation, and the validity of the constitutive equation was verified.Applications related to alkali-activated materials (AAMs) have received much attention due to their excellent mechanical properties and low-energy production. Although much research has focused on developing AAMs, their application is still limited. One of the primary reasons is the efflorescence. Not only does efflorescence affect the material aesthetics, but it also affects the mechanical performance, leading to a decrease in material quality. This paper first summarizes the current research on AAMs efflorescence. The formation process of efflorescence is divided into three parts alkaline cation leaching, air carbonation, and efflorescence formation. Furthermore, the influences caused by different factors, including raw materials, curing conditions, AAMs modalities, etc., on the efflorescence are proposed. This paper highlights the solutions for efflorescence by avoiding free alkaline cation leaching and preventing air carbonation. The advantages and disadvantages of efflorescence are discussed in-depth, showing that it can be exploited under certain conditions, such as in wastewater treatment. This paper has important implications for the practical preparation and application of AAMs.Magnesium sheet metal alloys offer a deformation asymmetry, which is strongly related to grain size and texture. In order to predict deformation behavior as well as to provide methods to eliminate anisotropy and yield asymmetry, a lot of effort is invested in studying the tension-compression asymmetry of magnesium alloys. However, only a few studies deal with the characterization of the yield asymmetry of magnesium wrought alloys, especially Ca-containing alloys, related to temperature and strain. In this study, the orthotropic behavior of a twin-roll-cast, homogenized, rolled and finish-annealed Mg-2Zn-1Al-0.3Ca (ZAX210) magnesium alloy was investigated by tensile testing at room temperature, 150 °C and 250 °C. The r-values were determined and the Hill'48 yield criterion was used for the constitutive formulation of the plastic yielding and deformation. The yield loci calculated using Mises and Hill'48 as well as the determined r-values reveal an almost isotropic behavior of the ZAX210 alloy. The r-value increases with increasing logarithmic strain. At 0.16 logarithmic strain the r-values at room temperature vary between 1 (0°) and 1.5 (45° and 90°). At higher temperatures (250 °C), r-values close to 1 at all tested directions are attained. The enhanced yield asymmetry can be attributed to the weaker basal texture that arises during hot rolling and final annealing of the twin-roll-cast ZAX210 magnesium alloy. In comparison to AZ31, the ZAX210 alloy shows a yield behavior close to transversal isotropy. Finally, responsible mechanisms for this behavior are discussed.SAC (sulfoaluminate cement) has become a research hotspot as a low-carbon ecological cement. In addition, multi-walled carbon nanotubes have good thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties and can serve as excellent nano-reinforced cement-based fillers. This study explored the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and researched the effect of CNTs on the mechanical properties, hydration process, hydration products, and microstructure of SAC paste, and the mechanism of CNT-enhanced SAC paste was revealed. The results showed that the mechanical properties of SAC paste were significantly improved after the addition of CNTs. When the CNT content was 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.15%, the compressive strength after 28 d was increased by 13.2%, 18.3%, and 22.5%, respectively; compared with the C0 group (without CNTs), the flexural strength increased by 8.2%, 11.3%, and 14.4%, respectively. The addition of CNTs accelerated the hydration process of SAC paste. Due to the adsorption effect and nucleation effect of CNTs, more hydration products were generated, filling the matrix's pores and improving its compactness. The mechanism of CNTs enhanced SAC paste was revealed. CNTs and hydration products co-filled the pores, including AFt (ettringite) and AH3 (gibbsite). CNTs improve the mechanical properties of SAC paste through filling, bridging, crack bending, deflection, pulling out, and pulling off.Acoustic emission (AE) is often accompanied by the propagation of internal microcracks in loaded rock samples, and it essentially reflects microinstability phenomena driven by energy redistribution under stress. In this paper, loading and unloading tests were carried out to investigate the internal nonlinear damage evolution characteristics of diorite samples under different unloading confining-pressure rates. The nonlinear mechanical characteristics of the strain energy sequence of diorite were studied by applying nonlinear dynamics and basic chaos theory and MATLAB software. Moreover, the evolution characteristics of AE counts and AE energy of rock samples were investigated, and their microcrack-propagation modes were analyzed based on the RA-AF scatter distribution of AE and a two-dimensional Gaussian mixture model. Finally, according to the evolution characteristics of energy and AE, the nonlinear damage evolution mechanism of diorite under loading and unloading conditions was revealed. read more The results show that, before the loading and unloading peak strength, when the strain-energy-promotion coefficient, r, is equal to 1 or changes in the ranges of 1-3, 3-3.
