Introduction research shows the potential effect of vitamin D supplementation with an improvement in the glycemic profile of pre-diabetic patients. Objective this study evaluates the effects of vitamin D supplementation on glycemic control markers in pre-diabetic individuals. Methods we analyzed studies published over the last ten years, and indexed in the Science Direct, PubMed, and LILACS databases. We searched studies using health descriptors related to vitamin D, pre-diabetes, and glycemic control markers. We considered randomized controlled trials eligible for inclusion. All phases of selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were carried out by two independent evaluators. Results we identified 309 articles, of which 4 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 3 studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation does not alter glycemic control markers in pre-diabetic individuals. Only one study showed a positive effect after supplementation with 60,000 IU/month of vitamin D3 for 12 months, witarticles, of which 4 met the inclusion criteria. A number of studies suggest a relationship between the intake of ultra-processed foods and the prevalence of obesity. Specifically, this type of food provides large amounts of free sugars and saturated fats, which contribute to a high energy intake. In the last few decades the consumption of these products has increased to the point of representing an important amount of calories in the daily diet of several populations. As a result, foods that are usually consumed in healthy eating patterns, containing fiber, complex carbohydrates, and good fats, have been displaced. This systematic review aims to compile the information available in the literature, and to examine the scientific evidence about the relationship between ultra-processed food and obesity. Nevertheless, there are a number of limitations due to the heterogeneity of the methodologies or food classification systems used in the different studies, which makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions on the relationship between consumption of ultrhe relationship between consumption of ultra-processed food and development of obesity.
Introduction home confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic can influence the dietary profiles of the population, suddenly subjected to a stressful factor that implies important modifications in life habits. Among others, a restriction of mobility and a change in the way of carrying out work, going from being face-to-face to non-contact (teleworking). Objective to know the usual dietary pattern prior to confinement, and to assess the evolution of adherence to the Mediterranean diet weekly until its conclusion. Methods data were collected using a weekly anonymous online questionnaire that monitored adherence to the Mediterranean diet in real time in an initial sample of 490 adults from Spain. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the MEDAS (Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener) and modified PREDIMED questionnaires. Results confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the eating habits of the participants, so that adherence to the Mediterranean diet increased at the end of the confinemas measured by body mass index (BMI) except in women (23.3 kg/m2 ± 2.9 initial and 23.4 kg/m2 ± 2.9 final; p less then 0.001), with a slight increase in this parameter, but maintaining on average the healthy values recommended by the guidelines. Conclusions in the studied population we observed an improvement in adherence to the Mediterranean diet without observing clinically relevant changes in BMI.
Introduction fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic rheumatic disorder that is related to high levels of cholesterol, high values of diastolic pressure, higher waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR), and higher body mass index. Objectives the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Ganoderma lucidum (GL) and Ceratonia siliqua (CS) on blood parameters and anthropometrical measures in women with fibromyalgia. Methods a double-blind randomized pilot trial was carried out. One group took 6 g/day of micro-milled carpophore powder of GL for 6 weeks, while the second group took the same dose of CS flour. Fasting glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides levels, weight, fat mass, muscular mass, waist-hip ratio, and blood pressure were assessed. Results our results did not show any statistically significant differences in any of the outcome measures, even if there was a CS tendency to reduce fasting glucose levels and increase WHR. Conclusions our results did not support the utility of both GL and CS as nutritional supplements to cont, even if there was a CS tendency to reduce fasting glucose levels and increase WHR. Introduction a lipid emulsion (LE) may result in different immunomodulatory effects depending on its fatty acid composition. LEs enriched with fish oil and those based on olive oil (OOBE) have shown advantages over those derived from soybean oil, although very few studies have compared these with each other, and none was performed in critically ill surgical patients. Objectives to demonstrate non-inferiority for the therapeutic efficacy of SMOFlipid® (enriched with fish oil) versus Clinoleic® (OOBE) in relation to the occurrence of nosocomial infection and other evolutionary parameters. To demonstrate non-inferiority in the safety profile of SMOFlipid® versus Clinoleic® in terms of mortality and adverse events. Material and method a phase-III, non-inferiority clinical trial performed in critically ill postsurgical patients. The subjects were randomized to receive SMOFlipid® or Clinoleic®. For comparison of qualitative variables case frequencies and percentages were obtained using the Chi-squared test or Fisd in the main non-inferiority analysis of the primary endpoint. Results during de inclusion period 73 patients were selected, 37 of whom received Clinoleic® and 36 SMOFlipid®. The as-prepared ceria NPs exhibited multi-enzymatic properties such as peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase, offering efficient protection of renal cells against H2O2 stimulation in vitro. Moreover, due to their ultrasmall size, ceria NPs could efficiently accumulate in the kidneys, thus protecting renal cells against ROS in vivo. We report the development of a tandem microfluidic respirometer that simultaneously tracks both the reduction of mediators on the electrode and the ensuing reduction of O2 by complex IV in the inner mitochondrial membrane. The response time of O2 consumption to multiple alternating potential steps is of approximately 10 s for a 150 μm-thick sample. Steady O2 depletion shows good quantitative correlation with the supplied electric charge, Pearson's r = 0.994. Reduction of mediators on biocompatible gold electrodes modified with carbon ink or fumed silica can compete with the oxidation of mediators by mitochondria, yielding an overall respiratory activity comparable to that upon chemical reduction by ascorbate. The dependence of O2 consumption on mediator and mitochondrial suspension concentrations shows that mass transport between the electrode and mitochondria does not limit biological activity of the latter.
