OBJECTIVE To compare the measured values obtained from the plaster model, digital models created by scanning the plaster models and direct intraoral scanning with the values obtained from direct intraoral measurements. DESIGN This was a prospective clinical study. SETTING The study was conducted in Department of Orthodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, Tamil Nadu, India. PARTICIPANTS Ten patients before the start of orthodontic treatment were selected for the study. METHODS A computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system is an advanced technology that is being adopted in the field of orthodontics for diagnosis, treatment planning and documentation of patient records. Mesiodistal tooth width measurements of first premolars, canines, lateral incisors and central incisors, and transverse width measurement from mesial pit of right first premolar to mesial pit of left first premolar in both maxilla and mandible were obtained from direct intraoral measurement (gold standard), study model obtained from alginate impression, intraoral scanned image, and desktop scanned image of the study model. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA was performed to find the difference in mean among the groups. RESULTS A P value > 0.05 was obtained in ANOVA indicating that there is no statistically significant difference in the measurements obtained by either of the methods. CONCLUSION Conventional stone models and digital models obtained from intraoral scan and desktop scanning of plaster models are clinically reliable as the variations in measurements obtained from these methods were clinically negligible.Aims Sleep disturbances and work-related mental strain are linked to increased sickness absence and disability pension (DP), but we have no information on synergy effects. The aim of this study was to examine the combined (and separate) association of the two predictors with subsequent long-term work disability and mortality. Methods A total of 45,498 participants aged 16-64 years were interviewed in the Swedish Surveys of Living Conditions between 1997 and 2013, and were followed up on long-term sickness absence (LTSA; >90 days/year), DP and mortality via national registers until 2016. Crude and multivariable Cox analyses were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results For LTSA, the HRs for sleep disturbances and work-related mental strain were 1.6 (95% CI 1.5-1.7) and 1.3 (95% CI 1.2-1.4), respectively. For DP, the HRs were 2.0 (95% CI 1.8-2.2) and 1.4 (95% CI 1.2-1.5). Mortality was only predicted by sleep disturbances (HR=1.2, 95% CI 1.1-1.4). No synergy effect was seen. Conclusions Work-related mental strain and, in particular, sleep disturbances were associated with a higher risk of subsequent LTSA and DP, but without synergy effects. Sleep disturbances were also associated with mortality. Exposure to interventions tackling sleep disturbance and prevention of workplace stress may reduce work disability.Rationale Currently, there is no effective intervention available that can reduce brain damage following reperfusion. Clinical studies suggest a positive correlation between the increased influx of neutrophils and severity of brain injury following reperfusion. Integrin α9β1 is highly expressed on activated neutrophils and contributes to stable adhesion, but its role in stroke outcome has not been demonstrated to date. Objective We sought to determine the mechanistic role of myeloid-specific α9β1 in the progression of ischemic stroke in murine models with preexisting comorbidities. Methods and Results We generated novel myeloid-specific α9-deficient (α9-/-) wild-type (α9fl/flLysMCre+/-), hyperlipidemic (αfl/flLysMCre+/-Apoe-/-) and aged (bone marrow chimeric) mice to evaluate stroke outcome. Susceptibility to ischemia/reperfusion injury was evaluated at 1, 7- and 28-days following reperfusion in two models of experimental stroke filament and embolic. We found that peripheral neutrophils displayed elevated α9 logic evidence for the first time that targeting myeloid-specific integrin α9β1 improves short and long-term functional outcome in stroke models with preexisting comorbidities by limiting cerebral thrombosis and inflammation.A comprehensive approach for evaluating the feasibility of landfill rehabilitation should be developed to allow landfill owners to thoroughly examine the feasibility of a landfill soil remediation project in advance. With a view of contributing to the development of a common framework for the evaluation of landfill rehabilitation projects, this paper presents the results of a case study in which the issue of assessing the costs and benefits of rehabilitating the Beiyangqiao simple landfill are addressed. Based on the results of a survey, the cost-benefit assessment criteria and candidate remediation methods were selected. The alternatives included are, in-situ landfill closure; in-situ aerobic stabilization combined with in-situ screening and classification of recovered materials, transport for off-site disposal; and ectopic mining combined with recycling and incineration. Results show that the costs of landfill rehabilitation would range from 11.23 to 32.02 million United States dollars (USD). The key benefits would be land reclamation, heat or electricity generation by incineration, and recycling of waste materials. The total benefits would range in value from 59.62 to 61.47 million USD. The net present value of three scenarios would be positive, and would range from 8.6 to 10.02 million USD. The results suggest that all three scenarios were positive. Nevertheless, "in-situ aerobic stabilization, in-situ screening, transportation and off-site disposal" was most beneficial considering all parameters. IMPLICATIONSThis study applied a cost-benefit analysis model for assessing the economic feasibility of landfill rehabilitation, which is important to promoting landfill rehabilitation, and the market potential was assessed based on an actual project. The findings can be useful for providing landfill owners choices in a landfill rehabilitation project to achieve least quantified costs and overhead. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) has pursued development of alternative fuels to augment or replace petroleum-based jet fuels. Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) renewable jet fuel is certified for use in commercial and USAF aircraft. HEFA feedstocks include camelina seed oil (Camelina sativa, HEFA-C); rendered animal fat (tallow, HEFA-T); and mixed fats and oils (HEFA-F). The aim of this study was to examine potential toxic effects associated with HEFA fuels exposures. All 3 HEFA fuels were less dermally irritating to rabbits than petroleum-derived JP-8 currently in use. Inhalation studies using male and female Fischer-344 rats included acute (1 day, with and without an 11-day recovery), 5-, 10- or 90-day durations. Rats were exposed to 0, 200, 700 or 2000 mg/m3 HEFA-F (6 hr/day, 5 days/week). Acute, 5 - and 10-day responses included minor urinalysis effects. Kidney weight increases might be attributed to male rat specific hyaline droplet formation. Nasal cavity changes included olfactory epithelial degeneration at 2000 mg/m3. Alveolar inflammation was observed at ≥700 mg/m3. For the 90-day study using HEFA-C, no significant neurobehavioral effects were detected. Minimal histopathological effects at 2000 mg/m3 included nasal epithelium goblet cell hyperplasia and olfactory epithelium degeneration. mTOR inhibitor A concurrent micronucleus test was negative for evidence of genotoxicity. All HEFA fuels were negative for mutagenicity (Ames test). Sensory irritation (RD50) values were determined to be 9578 mg/m3 for HEFA-C and greater than 10,000 mg/m3 for HEFA-T and HEFA-F in male Swiss-Webster mice. Overall, HEFA jet fuel was less toxic than JP-8. Occupational exposure levels of 200 mg/m3 for vapor and 5 mg/m3 for aerosol are recommended for HEFA-based jet fuels.OBJECTIVES This study aims to examine the associations among immigrant status, resilience, and perceived oral health for Chinese American older adults in Hawaii. METHOD Data derived from 430 Chinese American adults aged 55 years and older residing in Honolulu, HI. We compared the self-rated oral health and oral health problems between U.S.-born Chinese Americans and foreign-born Chinese Americans by using ordered logistic regression and ordinary least squares regression models. RESULTS Findings suggest that immigrant status and lower levels of resilience are associated with poorer self-rated oral health and more oral health problems for Chinese American older adults in Hawaii. Resilience is more strongly associated with self-rated oral health for U.S.-born Chinese American than for foreign-born Chinese Americans, but this pattern was not evident for oral health problems. DISCUSSION Older Chinese American immigrants in Hawaii are disadvantaged in terms of their oral health. Understanding their susceptibilities may lead to targeted interventions.Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a life and limb-threatening complication of heparin exposure. Here, we review the pathogenesis, incidence, diagnosis, and management of HIT. The first step in thwarting devastating complications from this entity is to maintain a high index of clinical suspicion, followed by an accurate clinical scoring assessment using the 4Ts. Next, appropriate stepwise laboratory testing must be undertaken in order to rule out HIT or establish the diagnosis. In the interim, all heparin must be stopped immediately, and the patient administered alternative anticoagulation. Here we review alternative anticoagulation choice, therapy alternatives in the difficult-to-manage patient with HIT, and the problem of overdiagnosis.Chitooligosaccharides (COS) are derived from chitosan, which can be used as nutraceuticals and functional foods. Because of their various biological activities, COS are widely used in the food, medicine, agriculture, and other fields. COS were prepared by chitosanase from Pseudoalteromonas sp. SY39 and their anti-obesity activity was researched in mice in this study. The effects of hydrolysis time, temperature, the ratio of enzyme to chitosan, and pH on the productivity of COS were discussed. Preparation process of COS was established in a 5-L fermenter. COS were characterized and their anti-obesity activity was studied in animal experiments. The results showed that COS could effectively reduce serum lipid levels and obesity in mice, and have a good anti-obesity activity. The preparation technology and remarkable anti-obesity activity of COS further expand their applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Background In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared the Opioid epidemic a public health emergency. In the US, emergency rooms treat more than 1,000 people each day for drug overdose, and 115 of them die. This study examines compositional and contextual factors associated with drug overdose deaths rates in the US. Methods Local spatial autocorrelation statistics were used to estimate hot spot areas to identify census tracts with high risk of drug overdose death. Logistic regressions investigated the relationship between drug overdose death rates and various compositional and contextual variables across census tracks. Results The adjusted logistic model shows that compositional variables depression (OR = 2.47 [2.37-2.58]), poor mental health (OR = 1.71 [1.63-1.79]), median age 1.41 (1.36-1.47) and the percentage of people with a high school diploma (OR = 1.30 [1.24-1.35]) were positively associated with the rate of drug overdose deaths. On the other hand, contextual variables the percentage having health insurance (OR = 0.
