To conduct a detailed analysis on the burden of vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy (DR) by year, age and gender in China from 1990 to 2017.
This is a between-country, retrospective, comparative burden-of-disease study. Prevalence and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) data caused by DR in China and relative territories were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2017 to observe the changing trends of vision loss.
Prevalence and YLDs of DR in China increased significantly from 1990 to 2017. The age-standardized prevalence and YLDs rate witnessed a slowly declining trend recently. Higher prevalence and YLDs were observed in female subjects in the past three decades. Middle-aged and elderly people suffered from a higher burden of DR-induced vision loss. The total age-standardized prevalence rate of China in 1990 (17.68) and 2017 (21.88) was lower than that of other seven neighbouring countries. In 2017, moderate vision loss (MVL) (17.19) accounted for the largest proportion in China. The all-age YLDs of DR showed the second-highest increase (150.26%) while the age-standardized YLDs rate showed the third-highest increase (14.91%) among fifteen common causes of vision impairment (VI) from 1990 to 2017. China ranked 3rd among G20 countries in terms of all-age YLDs while ranked 18th in age-standardized YLDs rate in 2017.

Bloodstream infections caused by Candida species, known as candidemia are on the rise because of increasing complexity of surgical procedures, patient's underlying co-morbidities and shift in patient's demographics. This study was conducted to evaluate the epidemiology, risk factors, co-morbidities, antifungal treatment and outcomes of candidemia in Candida albicans (C. Protein Tyrosine Kinase inhibitor albicans) and Candida non-albicans (C. non-albicans) in East Sussex Healthcare Trust (ESHT), England.
This retrospective and prospective study was performed during January 2006 to June 2017.
A total of 102 episodes of candidemia on 100 patients (55 males) were identified. C. non-albicans were predominant (55%). All isolates were sensitive to amphotericin B, caspofungin and voriconazole while one C. albicans and five C. non-albicans isolates were resistant to fluconazole. The risk factors in C. albicans and C. non-albicans groups were comparable which included intensive care unit (ICU) stay (15% vs 10%), the presence of intravascular lineiated with significant mortality, however, the use of fluconazole has shown the increased survival rate. This study suggests the surveillance of candidemia, and antifungal susceptibility pattern in current practice and the treatment.

Recent achievements in recovery of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAG) provide clues for improving cultivation via metabolic reconstructions and other genomic characteristics. Here we report the isolation in pure culture of a thermophilic spirochete with the use of MAGs binned from metagenomes of the deep (>2 km) aquifers broached by two artesian boreholes in Western Siberia. The organism constitutes a minor share in the aquifer microbial community and could not be cultivated by traditional techniques. The obtained two pure culture isolates along with three bacteria identified by MAGs represent a novel family-level lineage in the order Brevinematales. Based on genomic and phenotypic characteristics the novel spirochete is proposed to be classified as Longinema margulisiae gen. nov., sp. nov. within a novel family, Longinemaceae fam. nov. Both cultivated strains, NST and N5R, are anaerobic hemoorganoheterotrophes growing by fermentation of starch and a few sugars. They can form recalcitrant round bodies under unfavourable growth conditions, which survive up to 15 min at 95°C and can revert to the original helical cells. We suggest that the round bodies may facilitate global distribution of this lineage, detected from molecular signaturesand colonization of subsurface environments.
Problem bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) is a heterogeneous disorder with variation in management worldwide. Phenotyping aims to personalize therapy and optimize outcomes. The most well-described phenotype is Hunner lesion disease (HLD). The prevalence of HLD and outcome of phenotype-directed management in the UK is not well-studied. We describe the management of a contemporary cohort of patients with BPS/IC in the UK.
Retrospective analysis of all patients with BPS/IC from January 2015-November 2018. Outcomes of patients who underwent laser ablation to Hunner lesions were collected using the Global Response Assessment tool.
One hundred and sixty-three patients (mean age of 43 years [20-85]) were included. 78% were female and patients had experienced symptoms for an average 6 years (1-30) prior to specialist assessment. Eighty-three percent of patients had pelvic imaging (44% ultrasound, 42% magnetic resonance imaging and 14% computed tomography), and a relevant abnormality was foundhort-term efficacy in improving pain, but re-intervention is often required.Vibrational polaritonic chemistry is emerging as an exciting new sub-field of chemistry, one in which strong interactions with optical cavity vacuum fields are another degree of freedom alongside temperature, solvent, catalyst, and so on to modify thermochemical reactivity. The field stands at a fascinating juncture with experimental works on a variety of organic reactions continuing to blossom, just as many theoretical works appear which diverge significantly in their predictions compared to experiments. The outlook for the field is no doubt an exciting one as it seeks to unify the observed novel optical cavity-induced chemical phenomena with satisfying accompanying physical theory. In this minireview we highlight experimental works on vibrational polaritonic chemistry that have appeared most recently, focusing on the chemistry of the rate-limiting steps to provide mechanistic insight. We hope this review will encourage synthetic chemists to enter the field and we discuss the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead as polaritonic chemistry grows into the future.Complement component C1q, a soluble defense collagen, is the recognition protein of the classical complement pathway. C1q is able to recognize and interact with multiple targets and, via the subsequent activation of its cognate serine proteases C1r and C1s, initiates the complement cascade. C1q is made up of six ABC heterotrimers each containing two different functional regions, an N-terminal collagen-like region (CLR) and a C-terminal globular region (GR). These heterotrimers assemble via their N-terminal regions, resulting in the characteristic 'bouquet-like' shape of C1q with an N-terminal bundle of collagen fibers with six diverging stems each exhibiting a C-terminal globular head. The GRs are responsible for the versatile recognition of multiple C1q targets, whereas the CLRs trigger immune response through interacting with several cellular or soluble partners. We report here the generation of the first recombinant form of human C1q without its recognition globular heads. The noncollagenous domain 2 (nc2) of type IX collagen has been substituted for the C1q GR in order to control the correct registering of the collagen triple helices of C1q chains A, B, and C. The resulting CLR_nc2 recombinant protein produced in stably transfected EXPI293 mammalian cells was correctly assembled and folded, as demonstrated by mass spectrometry, mass photometry, and electron microscopy experiments. Its interaction properties were investigated using surface plasmon resonance analysis with known CLR ligands the tetramer of C1r and C1s dimers and MBL-associated protein MAp44. Comparison with the interaction properties of native serum-derived C1q and CLR revealed that recombinant CLR_nc2 retains C1q CLR functional properties.The development of new principles and techniques with high neuronal compatibility for quantitatively monitoring the dynamics of neurochemicals is essential for deciphering brain chemistry and function but remains a great challenge. We herein report a neuron-compatible method for in vivo neurochemical sensing by powering a single carbon fiber through spontaneous bipolar electrochemistry as a new sensing platform. By using ascorbic acid as a model target to prove the concept, we found that the single-carbon-fiber-powered microsensor exhibited a good response, high stability and, more importantly, excellent neuronal compatibility. The microsensor was also highly compatible with electrophysiological recording, thus enabling the synchronous recording of both chemical and electrical signals. The sensing principle could be developed for in vivo monitoring of various neurochemicals in the future by rationally designing and tuning the electrochemical reactions at the two poles of the carbon fiber.Concerns about the prospect of a global pandemic have been triggered many times during the last two decades. Here, we show how considering the pandemic through the lenses of the evolutionary ecology of pathogens can help better understand the root causes and devise solutions to prevent the emergence of future pandemics. We call for better integration of these approaches into transdisciplinary research and invite scientists working on the evolutionary ecology of pathogens to contribute to a more "solution-oriented" agenda with practical applications, emulating similar movements in the field of economics in recent decades.Inferring the body mass of fossil taxa, such as non-avian dinosaurs, provides a powerful tool for interpreting physiological and ecological properties, as well as the ability to study these traits through deep time and within a macroevolutionary context. As a result, over the past 100 years a number of studies advanced methods for estimating mass in dinosaurs and other extinct taxa. These methods can be categorized into two major approaches volumetric-density (VD) and extant-scaling (ES). The former receives the most attention in non-avian dinosaurs and advanced appreciably over the last century from initial physical scale models to three-dimensional (3D) virtual techniques that utilize scanned data obtained from entire skeletons. The ES approach is most commonly applied to extinct members of crown clades but some equations are proposed and utilized in non-avian dinosaurs. Because both approaches share a common goal, they are often viewed in opposition to one another. However, current palaeobiological research problems are often approach specific and, therefore, the decision to utilize a VD or ES approach is largely question dependent.
