Brief History of Sweden
Welcome to Sweden! A country, whose history, begins about 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. As the ice began melting, settlers arrived from the east and south. In about 500 A.D., the warlike Svea tribe settled north of Stockholm and gave Sweden its name. From the 8th to 11th centuries, Vikings arrived using Sweden as their homeground. Evidence of their visit can be found in the ancient carvings on Rok located in Ostergotland. Sweden did not recognize its first king until 1008 when Olof Skotkonung became the first christian king, making christianity much more common throughout Sweden. Modern Sweden began to take shape from 1397 to 1523, when Sweden, Norway, and Denmark formed the Kalmar Union. The union quarreled, leading to the stockholm bloodbath. This bloodbath was Sweden’s worst event when Christian II and the Kalmar Union called nobles for a banquet and 82 nobles were beheaded. Gustav Vasa managed to escape the massacre and raised an army which drove Christian the II out of Sweden. This ended Sweden’s part in the Kalmar Union. On June 6, 1523 Gustav was elected president shaping Sweden for years to come. Sweden tried to remain neutral during both World Wars I and II, however many Swedes volunteered to help the Finnish army. By the year 1994, Sweden’s minor government stepped down and became the Sweden known today.
Evidence of Sweden’s history can be found throughout the country. Vikings who roamed Sweden left many carvings. Two famous ones can be found at Ales stones in Kaseberga and Storkyrkan in Tandsung. Plan a stop in Visby Gotland to continue a march through Swedish history. The most famous being the Visby Cathedral built in quite the late 12th century. Back on the continental part of Sweden visit Kalmar city, for a glance at an ancient castle. The Kalmar Slott, one of the most important castles in Swedish History, was used by leaders of the Kalmar union. In the capital city, Stockholm, two giant museums are available for learning more about Swedish history. The Vasa Museum and the Museum of Swedish history are must sees and depict the past in great detail. The Swedish flag represents the long history of Sweden as well, dating all the way back to the mid 1600’s. The design of the Swedish flag is similar to the Danish flag because they used to be one country. The blue and yellow are from their coat of arms, with the yellow showing generosity and the blue for loyalty, truth and justice. Sweden, a fabulous country formed by a history still visible today.

Sweden is a beautiful country and contains within it several must see locations and history dating thousands of years in the past. (Dominick, this really needs to be specific. The best time to see Sweden is in the Summer months (June to August). Sweden has many sunny days in the Summer but it is never too hot. The highs are in the XXX, and the lows at night are XXXX. ) During the beautiful midnight sun in summer Sweden is best for visitingpeople have light all day and nice temperatures to explore. People who visit Sweden usually have trouble staying warm however as it is extremely cold all times of the year. Start the trip in the capital city, Stockholm. Spend the first evening exploring Old Town and learning the city. Brush up on Swedish History by spending a day at the Vasa Museum (3 to 4 hrs) and Swedish History Museums. This gives a good overview and allows some sightseeing. Some great hotels offer a nice stay making it easy to find a place to stay. Next, catch the ferry in XXXX to visit the medieval walled city of Visby for a XXX-night stopover. Spend the afternoon exploring its medieval streets. The buildings all through Visby contain very old structures and even the first church in Sweden. The Visby Cathedral is also open to visit for many eyes seeking adventure. In the city of Kalmar Sweden’s rule under the Kalmar Union can be experienced in such a way like no place else. People even have the opportunity to visit the very castle the Kalmar Union ruled from, the Kalmar Slott. To get to Kalmar either a train or a quick plane would be best. . The only bad thing is that Visby is notoriously cold. If only people had the opportunity to see more of Sweden.
