To better understand the relationship between faith and LGBTQ+ identity, we conducted a qualitative analysis of 86 respondents to a general question posed through the Dear Abby column. Responses were anonymized and analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Analysis revealed six themes, reflecting a diversity of lived experience from community rejection to acceptance, and self-rejection to feelings of acceptance by God. Despite frequent media portrayals of conflict between faith and LGBTQ+ identity, the reality is more complex, and faith and LGBTQ+ identity development can be complementary.

A penetrating keratoplasty technique, termed graft-over-host technique, was used allowing the surgeon to expeditiously close the eye in the event of CH. After partial-thickness trephination, true preplaced sutures through the corneal host tissue were passed. After complete trephination, the corneal donor graft was placed under the host and sutured in a controlled fashion. The preplaced sutures had been drawn immediately, giving a broad secure cover, allowing controlled permanent suturing of the graft while selectively removing the preplaced sutures. When CH occurs, the preplaced sutures allow the surgeon to quickly close the eye securely.A simple approach for transplanting Bowman layer and anterior stroma Bowman-stromal inlay (BSI) in keratoconic patients as an intervention to cease progression of ectasia and increase the overall thickness is described. A femtosecond laser was used to create BSI from human eye bank donor corneas and form an intrastromal pocket in the host cornea. The inlay was placed in the intrastromal space using an intraocular lens injector. This technique was performed successfully in 10 eyes of patients with progressive corneal ectasia. Postoperatively, the increased host pachymetry was as per BSI thickness. The tomography parameters remained stable, suggesting stabilization of keratoconus over a mean 15.9 months of follow-up. The BSI may offer a technically easy and safe technique of stromal augmentation to arrest keratoconus progression. It also opens up the possibility of surface ablation in the future for visual rehabilitation.Four patients with pseudophakic corneal edema were subjected to pre-Descemet endothelial keratoplasty (PDEK) under the direct guidance of microscope-integrated optical coherence tomography (i-OCT). i-OCT facilitated successful type 1 big bubble formation during donor preparation, debridement of the hypertrophic epithelium, planning and placement of surgical wounds, descemetorrhexis with removal of remnant Descemet membrane tags, and identification of correct donor orientation and interface details. It was also possible to discern the stability of intraocular lens, flat iris configuration, adequate stromal hydration, and wound apposition on i-OCT. Preoperative visual acuity was counting fingers (50%), 0.78 logMAR (25%), and 1.48 logMAR (25%), whereas postoperative visual acuity was 0.6 logMAR (50%) and 0.3 logMAR (50%). At 6-months of follow-up, all grafts were clear and well attached, the mean central corneal thickness, graft size, graft thickness, and endothelial cell loss were 557.25 ± 13.45 μm, 7.75 ± 0.20 mm, 25.5 ± 2.64 μm, and 21.6 ± 0.02%, respectively. To conclude, i-OCT helped during various surgical steps of PDEK.A 21-year-old man was referred for refractive surgery evaluation. Spectacle dependence and poor visual quality in his left eye is his chief complaint. He cannot tolerate contact lenses (CLs). The corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was 20/20 in the right eye (-1.50 -2.00 × 180) and 20/30 in the left eye (-1.25 -1.50 × 170). The patient denied any history of ocular trauma, systemic disease, or medications. Corneal topography with different technologies revealed an inferior steepening in the left eye (Figure 1), whereas keratoconus indices from different strategies are within normal limits in both eyes (Supplemental Figures 1-4, http//links.lww.com/JRS/A496). Pachymetry maps from different devices present absolute values of thinnest point within normal ranges. Epithelial mapping revealed a localized thickening in the left eye (Supplemental Figures 5 and 6, http//links.lww.com/JRS/A496). Slitlamp showed a total clear cornea with no signs of abnormality. The patient presents no signs of blepharitis or dry-eye syndrome either. Intraocular pressure is 14 mm Hg in both eyes. The retina was normal, bilaterally. Considering the findings, what would be your main diagnostic hypothesis and, if any, which refractive surgery option would you consider for this patient?
To assess the effectiveness of current antiseptic agents on multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates in an in vitro setting.

Department of Microbiology, The National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.

Organisms were selected based on current review of endophthalmitis literature methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, carbapenem-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactamase Klebsiella pneumoniae, and vancomycin-resistant (VRE) Enterococcus faecalis.

Samples were exposed to povidone-iodine (PVI) 5% and chlorhexidine (CHX) 0.05% for 0.5 minutes, 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes. After inactivation, organisms were incubated under standard conditions and growth assessed after 16 hours.

MRSA and MRSE responded to 3-minute PVI exposure. CHX eradicated MRSA growth after 5 minutes but failed to completely suppress MRSE. Pseudomonas and Klebsiella required 3-minute CHX exposure and 5-minute PVI exposure for complete clearance. selleck screening library Eradication of enterococci (VRE positive and negative) was not achieved at 10 minutes of CHX or PVI exposure. Comparison of PVI vs CHX showed a benefit for PVI in MRSA (P < .01) and MRSE (P < .001) eradication at 3 minutes.

Current recommendations of 3 minutes of antisepsis prior to intraocular surgery are not sufficient for complete eradication of MDR organisms from the ocular surface. A bespoke approach is suggested to patients at risk for carriage of MDR organisms to minimize the risk of endophthalmitis.

Sport-specific agility and change of direction in water polo The reliability and validity of two newly developed tests. J Strength Cond Res 35(12S) S111-S118, 2021-There is a gap in water-based agility testing that considers both the change-of-direction (COD) and perceptive-reactive components of agility. This study sought to develop easily implementable, sport-specific in-water agility tests for water polo and to verify the reliability and validity of these new tests the in-water Stop and Go (SG) and Jump and Go (JG). Female water polo athletes at the Senior (n = 12, age = 22.1 ± 2.1 years), Junior (n = 19, age = 18.5 ± 1.0 years), and Youth (n = 11, age = 16.5 ± 0.8 years) national levels performed 3 trials of each of the SG, JG, and the existing Functional Test for Agility Performance (FTAP). Senior athletes performed an additional experimental session to assess reliability 7) and was unsuccessful in discriminating between playing levels. Considering the favorable metrological properties of the SG and JG, their fidelity to in-game demands, and their accessible setups, these new tests represent viable options to implement at grassroots and elite levels for the assessment and training of water polo-specific agility.
Fox, JL, Conte, D, Stanton, R, McLean, B, and Scanlan, AT. The application of accelerometer-derived moving averages to quantify peak demands in basketball A comparison of sample duration, playing role, and session type. J Strength Cond Res 35(12S) S58-S63, 2021-The purpose of this was to study compare peak external workload intensities in basketball using accelerometer-derived moving averages between different sample durations (0.5-5 minutes), session types (training vs. game-play), and playing roles (starting vs. bench players). Five starting and 3 bench players were monitored over a 15-week competitive season using accelerometers. For all training sessions and games, peak external workload intensities were determined using accelerometer-derived moving averages for PlayerLoad per minute (PL·min-1) across sample durations of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 minutes. Linear mixed-models and effect sizes (ESs) were used to compare peak PL·min-1 between sample durations, session type, and playing role. Peak PL·min-1 was significantly different between all sample durations (p < 0.05; ES = 0.88-5.45), with higher intensities evident across shorter sample durations. In starting players, peak intensities were significantly higher during games compared with training for all sample durations (p < 0.05; ES = 0.69-0.93). Peak game intensities were higher in starting players using all sample durations (p > 0.05; ES = 0.69-1.43) compared with bench players. Shorter sample durations produced higher peak PL·min-1. Peak intensities were higher during games than training in starting players, indicating training may not adequately prepare players for the most demanding passages of game-play.

Marković, M, Kukić, F, Dopsaj, M, Kasum, G, Toskić, L, and Zarić, I. Validity of a novel specific wrestling fitness test. J Strength Cond Res 35(12S) S51-S57, 2021-The specific wrestling fitness test (SWFT) is a novel test aiming to estimate the level of physical preparedness of wrestlers; therefore, it should posses an acceptable level of validity. The aim of this study was to investigate an internal, external, and construct validity of SWFT. The sample consisted of 15 national level male wrestlers (age = 22.6 ± 2.3 years, body mass [BM] = 83.3 ± 6.5 kg, and BM index [BMI] = 25.36 ± 1.2 kg·m-2). They performed the SWFT, specific judo fitness test (SJFT), and specific wrestling performance test (SWPT), each test on a separate day. For each test, performance was evaluated in absolute measure as total number of throws at the end of the test (TnThrows) and relative measure as TnThrows/BM and TnThrows/BMI. Heart rate at the end of the test (HR0min) and 1 minute into recovery (HR1min) was used as a measure of cardiovascular functionality, whereas specific judo fitness index (SJFIndex) was used as an indicator of cardiovascular functionality relative to given performance.
