36-0.97) for incident hypertension, and 0.69 (95% CI 0.45-1.06) for BP progression). Among women, adiponectin was not associated with BP outcomes (RR [95% CI] for Q4 vs Q1 1.03 [0.86-1.23], and 1.01[0.83-1.23] for BP progression and incident hypertension respectively). Our findings were consistent across both the ACC/AHA and JNC-7 BP categories.

In a large, community-based sample of African Americans, higher adiponectin concentrations were associated with lower risks of BP progression and incident hypertension in men, but no significant association was observed in women.

In the present study we sought to investigate the frequency and clinical significance of mutations of genes implicated in myeloid malignancies using next generation sequencing, in CIN patients (n=185) with a long follow-up. We found that 21/185 patients (11.35%) carried totally 25 somatic mutations in 6 genes with median variant allele frequency (VAF) 12.75%. The most frequently mutated genes were DNMT3A and TET2 involving more than 80% of patients followed by IDH1/2, SRSF2 and ZRSR2. The frequency of transformation to a myeloid malignancy was low in the total group of patients (5/185 patients; 2.70%). However, from the transformed patients four belonged to the clonal (4/21; 19.05%) and one to the non-clonal (1/164; 0.61%) group, indicating that the presence of mutation(s) confers a relative risk for transformation 31.24 (P = 0.0017). The VAF of the mutant clones in the transformed patients was higher than 10% in all cases and the genes most frequently associated with malignant transformation were the SRSF2 and IDH1. No significant differences were identified between clonal and non-clonal groups in the severity of neutropenia. Patients with clonal disease were older compared to non-clonal patients. These data contribute to the better understanding of the heterogeneous entities underlying ICUS and highlight the importance of the mutation analysis for the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with unexplained neutropenias.Across 20 vaccine breakthrough cases detected at our institution, all 20 (100%) infections were due to variants of concern (VOC) and had a median Ct of 20.2 (IQR=17.1-23.3). When compared to 5174 contemporaneous samples sequenced in our laboratory, VOC were significantly enriched among breakthrough infections (p less then .05).The replacement of precious metals by more abundant and therefore much less expensive metals remains a very important challenge in catalysis. A Fe/TiO2 catalyst prepared by deposition-precipitation with urea showed very high selectivity to alkenes (>99%), even at high conversion (>90%), in selective hydrogenation of butadiene in an excess of propene. Its activity is very stable at 175 °C whereas the catalyst deactivates at 50 °C, although it is also initially very active. The presence of metallic iron seems to be necessary to ensure these excellent performances. The reaction-diffusion waves of proteins are known to be involved in fundamental cellular functions, such as cell migration, cell division, and vesicular transportation. In some of these phenomena, pattern formation on the membranes is induced by the coupling between membrane deformation and the reaction-diffusion system through curvature-inducing proteins that bend the biological membranes. Epigenetics inhibitor Although the membrane shape and the dynamics of the curvature-inducing proteins affect each other in these systems, the effect of such mechanochemical feedback loops on the waves has not been studied in detail. In this study, reaction-diffusion waves coupled with membrane deformation are investigated using simulations combining a dynamically triangulated membrane model with the Brusselator model extended to include the effect of membrane curvature. It is found that the propagating wave patterns change into nonpropageting patterns and spiral wave patterns due to the mechanochemical effects. Moreover, the wave speed is positively or negatively correlated with the local membrane curvature depending on the spontaneous curvature and bending rigidity. In addition, self-oscillation of the vesicle shape occurs, associated with the reaction-diffusion waves of curvature-inducing proteins. This agrees with the experimental observation of GUVs with a reconstituted Min system, which plays a key role in the cell division of Escherichia coli. The findings of this study demonstrate the importance of mechanochemical coupling in biological phenomena.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1039/D1SC00127B.].This paper investigates how banking competition and capital level impact on the risk-taking behavior of banking institutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The topic is perceived to be of significant importance during the COVID-19 pandemic. We use data for more than 225 banks in 18 countries in the MENA region to test whether increased competition causes banks to hold higher capital ratios. Employing panel data techniques, and distinguishing between Islamic and conventional banks, we show that banks tend to hold higher capital ratios when operating in a more competitive environment. We also provide evidence that banks in the MENA region increase their capitalization levels in response to a higher risk and vice versa. Further, banking concentration (measured by the HH-index) and credit risk have a significant and positive impact on capital ratios of IBs, whereas competition does play a restrictive role in determining the level of their capital. The results hold when controlling for ownership structure, regulatory and institutional environment, bank-specific and macroeconomic characteristics. Our findings inform regulatory authorities concerned with improving the financial stability of banking sector in the MENA region to strengthen their policies in order to force banks to better align with capital requirements and risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Proliferation of misinformation in digital news environments can harm society in a number of ways, but its dangers are most acute when citizens believe that false news is factually accurate. A recent wave of empirical research focuses on factors that explain why people fall for the so-called fake news. In this scoping review, we summarize the results of experimental studies that test different predictors of individuals' belief in misinformation.

The review is based on a synthetic analysis of 26 scholarly articles. The authors developed and applied a search protocol to two academic databases, Scopus and Web of Science. The sample included experimental studies that test factors influencing users' ability to recognize fake news, their likelihood to trust it or intention to engage with such content. Relying on scoping review methodology, the authors then collated and summarized the available evidence.

The study identifies three broad groups of factors contributing to individuals' belief in fake news. Firstle and diversifying designs of empirical investigations of people's susceptibility to false information online. We recommend examining digital platforms beyond Facebook, using more diverse formats of stimulus material and adding a comparative angle to fake news research.
The timely diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is challenging. Although pathogen-derived circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been detected in humans, the significance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-cfDNA detection in patients with PTB remains unclear.

This study enrolled patients with PTB and persons with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) as the study and control groups, respectively, from 2018 to 2020. We measured interferon-γ levels and calculated blood monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR). We conducted plasma cfDNA extraction, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and droplet digital PCR targeting the IS6110 gene of MTB. We calculated the sensitivity and specificity of using MTB-cfDNA to identify PTB and analyzed the factors associated with PTB diagnosis and MTB-cfDNA positivity.

We enrolled 24 patients with PTB and 57 LTBI controls. The sensitivity of using MTB-cfDNA to identify PTB was 54.2%(13/24) in total and 46.2%(6/13) in smear-negative cases. Two LTBI controls (3.5%) tesand MTB-cfDNA levels declined after treatment. The clinical value of MTB-cfDNA in PTB management necessitates further investigation.Recently, we reported that the chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 4 (CXCR4) and atypical chemokine receptor 3 (ACKR3) heteromerize with α1A/B/D-adrenoceptors (ARs) and arginine vasopressin receptor 1A (AVPR1A) in recombinant systems and in rodent and human vascular smooth muscle cells (hVSMCs). In these studies, we observed that heteromerization between two receptor partners may depend on the presence and the expression levels of other partnering receptors. To test this hypothesis and to gain initial insight into the formation of these receptor heteromers in native cells, we utilized proximity ligation assays in hVSMCs to visualize receptor-receptor proximity and systematically studied how manipulation of the expression levels of individual protomers affect heteromerization patterns among other interacting receptor partners. We confirmed subtype-specific heteromerization between endogenously expressed α1A/B/D-ARs and detected that AVPR1A also heteromerizes with α1A/B/D-ARs. siRNA knockdown of CXCR4 and of ACKR3tion patterns among other receptor partners may alter physiological and pathological responses, in particular in more complex systems, such as studies on the function of isolated organs or in in vivo experiments.
To investigate liver-related and all-cause mortality among amphetamine users with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and compare this with opioid users with HCV infection and the uninfected general population.

In this national register study of mortality in persons notified with HCV infection 1990-2015 and a substance-related diagnosis in Sweden, amphetamine users (n = 6,509) were compared with opioid users (n = 5,739) and a matched comparison group without HCV infection/substance use (n = 152,086).

Amphetamine users were observed for 91,000 years and 30.1% deceased. Crude liver-related mortality was 1.8 times higher in amphetamine users than opioid users (crude mortality rate ratio 1.78, 95% CI 1.45-2.19), but there was no significant difference when adjusting for age and other defined risk factors. An alcohol-related diagnosis was associated with liver-related death and was more common among amphetamine users. Crude and adjusted liver-related mortality was 39.4 and 5.8 times higher, respectively, compag death risk and higher alcohol consumption. Treatment of HCV infection and alcohol use disorders are needed to reduce the high liver-related mortality.
The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is a public health emergency of international concern and poses a challenge to the mental health and sleep quality of front-line medical staff (FMS). The aim of this study was to investigate the sleep quality of FMS during the COVID-19 outbreak in China and analyze the relationship between mental health and sleep quality of FMS.

From February 24, 2020 to March 22, 2020, a cross-sectional study was performed with 543 FMS from a medical center in Western China. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data anonymously. The following tests were used The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) for symptoms of anxiety, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for depressive symptoms, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality assessment.

Of the 543 FMS, 216 (39.8%) were classified as subjects with poor sleep quality. Anxiety (P<0.001), depression (P<0.001), and the prevalence of those divorced or widowed (P<0.05) were more common in FMS with poor sleep quality than in participants with good sleep quality.
