5 showed less influence. find more All influencing factors showed an improvement through the two-factor interaction. The associations of RH∩PM10 (q = 0.77), RH∩NDVI (q = 0.72), and NDVI∩SR (q = 0.73) exhibited a strong impact on surface ozone distribution, suggesting that places with sparse vegetation cover, dry climate and strong SR would usually cause high atmospheric ozone burden. This could also explain why concentrations of surface ozone continue to increase in some remote areas worldwide with ecological deterioration and desertification.Pyrethroid insecticides have been the subject of numerous epidemiology studies in the past two decades. We examined the pyrethroids epidemiology literature published between 2016 and 2021. Our objective with this exercise was to inform interested readers regarding information on methodological elements that strengthen a study's use for translation (i.e., use in risk assessment) and to describe aspects of future research methods that could improve utility for decision-making. We focused on the following elements (i) study design that provided evidence that pyrethroid exposure preceded the outcome, (ii) evidence that the method used for exposure characterization was reliable and sufficiently accurate for the intended purpose, and (iii) use of a robust approach for outcome ascertainment. For each of the 74 studies identified via the literature search, we categorized the methodological elements as Acceptable or Supplemental. A study with three Acceptable elements was considered Relevant for risk assessment purposes. Based on our evaluative approach, 18 (24%) of the 74 publications were considered to be Relevant. These publications were categorized as Acceptable for all three elements assessed confirmed exposure (N = 24), confirmed outcome (N = 64), exposure preceded the outcome (N = 44). Three of these studies were birth cohorts. There were 15 Relevant publications of adults which included 10 Agricultural Health Study cohort publications of self-reported permethrin. Overall, the majority of the reviewed studies used methods that did not permit a determination that pyrethroid exposure preceded the outcome, and/or did not utilize robust methods for exposure assessment and outcome ascertainment. There is an opportunity for investigators and research sponsors to build on the studies reviewed here and to incorporate more translational approaches to studying exposure/outcome associations related to pesticides and other chemicals.Trichloromethane (TCM) is a pollutant frequently detected in contaminated aquifers, and only four bacterial strains are known to respire it. Here, we obtained a novel Dehalobacter strain capable of transforming TCM to dichloromethane, which was denominated Dehalobacter sp. strain 8M. Besides TCM, strain 8M also completely transformed 1,1,2-trichloroethane to vinyl chloride and 1,2-dichloroethane. Quantitative PCR analysis for the 16S rRNA genes confirmed growth of Dehalobacter with TCM and 1,1,2-trichloroethane as electron acceptors. Carbon and chlorine isotope fractionation during TCM transformation was studied in cultured cells and in enzymatic assays with cell suspensions and crude protein extracts. TCM transformation in the three studied systems resulted in small but significant carbon (εC = -2.7 ± 0.1‰ for respiring cells, -3.1 ± 0.1‰ for cell suspensions, and - 4.1 ± 0.5‰ for crude protein extracts) and chlorine (εCl = -0.9 ± 0.1‰, -1.1 ± 0.1‰, and - 1.2 ± 0.2‰, respectively) isotope fractionation. A characteristic and consistent dual CCl isotope fractionation pattern was observed for the three systems (combined ΛC/Cl = 2.8 ± 0.3). This ΛC/Cl differed significantly from previously reported values for anaerobic dechlorination of TCM by the corrinoid cofactor vitamin B12 and other Dehalobacter strains. These findings widen our knowledge on the existence of different enzyme binding mechanisms underlying TCM-dechlorination within the genus Dehalobacter and demonstrates that dual isotope analysis could be a feasible tool to differentiate TCM degraders at field studies.Climate-induced flooding makes soil more vulnerable to heavy metal contamination, posing challenges for soil remediation. Salix has the potential to cope with flooding stress and environmental contamination, but its effectiveness in flooded soils with multiple heavy metals has not yet been well assessed. Thus, the present work tested fifteen Salix clones grown in multimetal (Cd, Zn and Pb) contaminated soils under non-flooded versus flooded conditions. The results indicated that all tested Salix clones withstood long-term (90 d) flooding. Compared to the non-flooded condition, the flooded condition reduced the Cd (11.7-90.1%) contents in all organs but dramatically increased the Zn and Pb contents in the roots. The bioconcentration factor values of heavy metals in the aboveground organs were in the order of Cd > Zn > Pb. The tested Salix clones were characterized by high phytoextraction capacity for Cd and Zn under non-flooded condition and phytostabilization trait for Pb under flooded condition. To assess the overall performance of phytoremediation potentials, we attempted to use an analytic hierarchy process-entropy weight (AHP-EW) model, which considered the growth performance, photosynthetic parameters, accumulation, and mobility of toxic metals. Three Salix clones (J1010, P54 and P667) exhibited significant potential for multimetal remediation capacities. The current study provided valuable insights into the phytomanagement of woody plants, and the AHP-EW model is helpful for screening suitable trees for the phytoremediation of heavily multimetal contaminated wetlands. The application of pyrolyzed sewage sludge for land remediation is increasingly being considered as a technical solution to reuse nutrients in the sludge and mitigate the burden of sludge treatment. In this study, the enhancement effect of Ca-based additives, via phosphorus pyrolysis transformation promotion, was systematically investigated for the growth of ryegrass and soil microbial diversity. In the pot experiment, pyrochar-modified methods mainly changed the content of available phosphorus and organic matter in the soil and then affected ryegrass growth. Soils treated with pyrochar prepared with CaO and Ca(OH)2 addition were dominated by phosphorus precipitation-capable Ramlibacter, while metal uptake-accelerating Massilia showed a high prevalence in the group treated with pristine sludge pyrochar. The results showed that the species composition of CaO and Ca(OH)2 treated groups were similar, while the groups treated with Ca3(PO4)2 and pristine sludge pyrochar exhibited similar compositional structures of microbial species. Furthermore, less than 3% of Pb accumulated in the shoots of the Ca-based additive-treated groups, but more than 35% of Pb was distributed in shoots treated with pristine sludge pyrochar. Therefore, the application of P-enhanced pyrochar adjusted by Ca-based additives to soil was beneficial to the growth of ryegrass and preventing metal transfer from soil to ryegrass. Based on both macroscopic and microscopic information, we summarized the promotion effect of P-enhanced pyrochar on ryegrass growth and soil physicochemical properties with the aim of designing a smart pyrochar for waste-to-resource applications. The pervasive existence of microplastics (MPs) and toxic metals is raising environmental and health concerns. Plastics are essentially a complex mixture of chemicals, but exposure to the aquatic environment increases their complexity through contaminant desorption/sorption. The aim of this study was to establish baseline data on the elemental occurrence and distribution of potentially toxic and geochemical metals/metalloids in microplastics 1-5 mm and mesoplastics (> 5 mm - 1 cm) along designated coastlines of the Gulf of Guinea (Nigeria) in addition to enabling more comprehensive ecotoxicological risk assessment. The concentrations of twenty-six metals aluminium (Al), antimony (Sb), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), boron (B), cadmium (Cd), calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), potassium (K), selenium (Se), sodium (Na), silicon (Si), silver (Ag), strontium (Sr), thallium (Tl), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), and zinc (for Cd, pollution indices such as the potential contamination index (PCI), hazard quotient (HQ), and modified hazard quotient (mHQ) indicated low severity contamination of beach and lagoon MPs by heavy metals. However, considering long-term accumulation of sorbed metals, their potential toxicity to marine biota may be considerable.Source apportionment of PM2.5 was performed using positive matrix factorization (PMF) based on chemical speciation data from 24-h filters collected throughout 2015 at six sampling sites of varying urban influences in Hong Kong. The input data include major inorganic ions, organic and elemental carbon, elements, and organic tracers. Nine factors were resolved, including (1) secondary sulfate formation process, (2) secondary nitrate formation process, (3) industrial emissions, (4) biomass burning, (5) primary biogenic emissions, (6) vehicle emissions, (7) residual oil combustion, (8) dust, and (9) aged sea salt. The PMF-resolved factor contributions in conjunction with air mass back trajectories showed that the two major sources for PM2.5 mass, secondary sulfate (annual 41%) and secondary nitrate (annual 9.9%), were dominantly associated with regional and super-regional pollutant transport. Vehicular emissions are the most important local source, and its contributions exhibit a clear spatial variation pattern, with the highest (6.9 μg/m3, 24% of PM2.5) at a downtown roadside location and the lowest (0.4 μg/m3, 2.0% PM2.5) at two background sites away from city centers. The ability of producing a more reliable source separation and identifying new sources (e.g. primary biogenic source in this study) was a direct advantageous result of including organic tracers in the PMF analysis. PMF analysis conducted on the same dataset in this study but without including the organic tracers failed to separate the biomass burning emissions and industrial/coal combustion emissions. PMF analysis without the organic tracers would also over-apportion the contribution of vehicular emissions to PM2.5, which would bias the evaluation of the effectiveness of vehicle-related control measures. This work demonstrates the importance of organic markers in achieving more comprehensive and less biased source apportionment results.Organic matter (OM) is an important component of riverine environments and a major factor in the migration and transformation of hydrophobic organic substances, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), to sediments. We studied the distributions, sources, and correlations between PAHs and OM in sediments from the Duliujian and the Beiyun rivers in North China. Sixteen PAHs were detected in the surface sediments at total concentrations ranging from 356 to 4652 ng·g-1 dry weight, which caused a moderate to high level of pollution. The PAH distributions were significantly and positively correlated with OM (p less then 0.01) and higher concentrations were detected downstream of areas affected by human activity. Petroleum, coal, and wood combustion were the main sources of PAHs in riverine sediments, and the sources of OM in sediment included terrestrial and aquatic higher plants, soil, and sewage discharge. The OM accumulated and aged along the river, with increases in the degree of aromaticity and condensation, which led to stronger adsorption of PAHs.
