Synaptic connections are essential to build a functional brain. How synapses are formed during development is a fundamental question in neuroscience. Recent studies provided evidence that the gut plays an important role in neuronal development through processing signals derived from gut microbes or nutrients. Although the roles of the gut in communicating signals from its internal environment to the brain are well known, it remains unclear whether the gut plays a genetically encoded role in neuronal development. Using C. elegans as a model, we uncover that a Wnt-endocrine signaling pathway in the gut regulates synaptic development in the brain. A canonical Wnt signaling pathway promotes synapse formation through regulating the expression of the neuropeptides encoding gene nlp-40 in the gut, which functions through the neuronally expressed GPCR/AEX-2 receptor during development. Wnt-NLP-40-AEX-2 signaling likely acts to modulate neuronal activity. Our study reveals a genetic role of the gut in synaptic development and identifies a novel contribution of the gut-brain axis.This study reports on a health promotion intervention (HPI), where graphic facilitation (GF) was used as an innovative method to enable participation in a co-design process in a multi-ethnic and disadvantaged neighbourhood in Denmark. The aim was to enable middle-aged and older residents to participate in the research process of planning and evaluating the HPI, as well as in the activities it constituted. GF was used to document statements and inputs from residents through visual meeting minutes and resident experiences with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown were drawn by a graphic facilitator. We use the ladder of participation as a framework to unfold the participation enabled by GF. During the HPI, data were produced through ethnographic field studies in and outside the neighbourhood and in design workshops with residents. The study finds that GF helped in reaching a target group difficult to engage in research and that the engagement of a graphic facilitator shifted the power-balance between the researchers and the residents, redistributing expertise. Carrying out GF in a HPI is a collaborative endeavour and in addition to research competences, it requires the artistic and relational skills of a graphic facilitator. The co-created process of the visual minutes and COVID-19 experiences created a sense of ownership and encouraged the residents to reflect on their interaction with the researchers. The redistribution of expertise was conditioned by the power dynamics present and GF helped unfold these dynamics. This is especially important in an HPI engaging socio-economically vulnerable populations.In health promotion research, enthusiasm for patient and public involvement (PPI) is growing. However, a lack of conceptual clarity leads to ambiguities in participatory processes and purposes, and hampers efforts to achieve and evaluate PPI in research. This study provides an overview of its underlying reasons-or rationales-so as to better understand, guide and interpret PPI in research practice. We conducted a critical review to identify typologies of rationales for PPI. We re-categorized the different types of rationales from these typologies based on their content. We illustrated the resulting categories of rationales with examples from a case study on PPI in research on Lyme disease. Five categories of rationales for PPI were identified. The democratic rationale reflects the normative right of citizens to have a voice in research. The consumerist rationale refers to the economic right of stakeholders with interests to have a say. Rooted in social justice, the transformative rationale seeks to empower marginalized groups. The substantive rationale starts from epistemic considerations and aims to improve the quality of knowledge that research generates. The instrumental rationale is of pragmatic origin and refers to improved efficiency and effectiveness of the research. Our overview of categories of rationales can be used as a frame of reference for PPI in health promotion research. Exploring, stating explicitly and reflecting on the underlying reasons for PPI may help to define realistic purposes, select matching approaches and design appropriate evaluation studies. This might also contribute to the conceptualization of PPI.Participatory research in multiple forms is rapidly gaining ground and stands to provide valuable benefits in the area of health research. Citizen science, an increasingly popular form of participatory research, aims to involve laypersons in knowledge production and, as such, can offer new insights that may not be readily accessible by the traditional scientific research enterprise. Heralded as an advance in the democratization of science, citizen science stands as a potential player in evidence generation. Yet, while citizen science offers advantages through its emphasis on lay participation in uncovering information likely to be pertinent to improving health outcomes, without deliberate attention to pathways to inequity and oversight, some aspects can operate to perpetuate or exacerbate health inequities. Drawing on health disparities literature to assist in identifying possible pathways, this work aims to provide support for greater attention to 'process', which would include active engagement with intersecting inequities as a way of interrupting pathways to health inequity. If citizen science is to be true to its moniker, it cannot be 'equity-neutral' in a society where structural or systemic inequities are present. It must be equity-promoting. In the health context, the concerns of justice evolve into concerns of differential health impacts. To accomplish this, equity and justice, as well as representation and fair process, become critically important. Accordingly, this paper foregrounds proactive commitment to equity by confronting the reality of social inequalities present in a given society and adapting the project accordingly to minimize downstream health inequities.Parents that kill and consume their offspring often appear to be acting against their own reproductive interests. Yet parent-offspring cannibalism is common and taxonomically widespread across the animal kingdom. In this review, I provide an overview of our current understanding of parent-offspring cannibalism, which has seen a proliferation in adaptive hypotheses over the past 20 years for why parents consume their own young. I review over four decades of research into this perplexing behaviour, drawing from work conducted on fishes, reptiles, insects, birds, and mammals among other taxa. Many factors have been hypothesised to explain parent-offspring cannibalism in nature, including poor parental energy reserves, small or large brood sizes, low or uncertain parentage, and high brood densities, and additional factors are still being uncovered. Parent-offspring cannibalism does not appear to have a single predominant explanation; rather, the factor, or set of factors, that govern its expression is largely taxate conflict between the sexes, and I briefly discuss some consequences of this conflict on patterns of mate choice. By promoting, monitoring and controlling the plant microbiome, and understanding the role of certain biocontrol agents within the plant throughout the lifecycle of the plant, we may substantially improve nutritional and environmental standards and reduce the negative impact of some agrochemicals.
