As temperatures rose, most cells became immobilized on the surface, but a fraction of cells remained highly motile at distances of >100 μm above the surface. Suspended non-motile cells showed Brownian motion that scaled consistently with temperature and viscosity. A novel open-source automated tracking package was used to obtain 2D tracks of motile cells and quantify motility parameters, showing that swimming speed increased with temperature until ∼40°C, then plateaued. These findings are consistent with the observed heterogeneity of B. subtilis populations, and represent the highest reported temperature for swimming in this species. The total abundance of LAB genera on alfalfa pre-ensiling was 0.38% in bacterial community. For example, when the plant is exposed to soil, microbial communities may be an important factor in root community assembly. We conducted two experiments asking whether the composition of the root microbiota in mature plants could be determined by either the timing of root exposure to microbial communities or priority effects by early colonizing microbes. Timing of microbial exposure was manipulated through an inoculation experiment, where plants of different ages were exposed to a common soil inoculum. Priority effects were manipulated by challenging roots with established microbiota with an exogenous microbial community. Results show that even plants with existing microbial root communities were able to acquire new microbial associates, but that timing of soil exposure affected root microbiota composition for both bacterial and fungal communities in mature plants. Plants already colonized were only receptive to colonizers at 1 week post-germination. Our study shows that the timing of soil exposure in the early life stages of a plant is important for the development of the root microbiota in mature plants.Wolbachia is a maternally inherited bacterium that is widely distributed among arthropods, in which it manipulates the reproduction of its hosts. Phage WO is the only bacteriophage known to infect Wolbachia, and may provide benefit to its host or arthropods. We screened for the presence of phage WO in Wolbachia-infected butterfly species for the first time, to investigate their diversity and evolutionary dynamics. All Wolbachia-infected butterfly species, including members of the families Hesperiidae, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, and Pieridae, were found to harbor phage WO. Interestingly, 84% of 19 butterfly species, which were infected with a single Wolbachia strain harbored high levels of multiple phage types (ranging from 3 to 17 types), another three species harbored one or two phage types. For Wolbachia strains (ST-41, ST-19, ST-125 and ST-374) shared among various butterfly species, their host insects all harbored multiple phage types, while two Wolbachia strains (ST-297 and ST-wPcau) were fouy associated with butterflies.Reducing chemical fertilizers in combination with bio-organic fertilizers can limit the use of chemical fertilizers while maintaining soil fertility. However, the effects of combined fertilization on soil chemical properties, microbial community structure, and crop yield and quality are unknown. Using high-throughput sequencing, we conducted field experiments using lettuce plants subjected to five fertilization treatments chemical fertilizer with conventional fertilization rate (CK), chemical fertilizer reduction by 30% + 6,000 kg ha-1 bio-organic fertilizer (T1), chemical fertilizer reduction by 30% + 9,000 kg ha-1 bio-organic fertilizer (T2), chemical fertilizer reduction by 40% + 6,000 kg ha-1 bio-organic fertilizer (T3), and chemical fertilizer reduction by 40% + 9,000 kg ha-1 bio-organic fertilizer (T4). Compared with CK, the T1-T4 had significantly higher soil pH and soil organic matter (SOM) and showed increased richness and diversity of the bacterial community, and decreased richness and diversity of the fungal community. Principal coordinate analysis evidenced that the bacterial and fungal communities of CK and T1-T4 were distinctly separated. The Kruskal-Wallis H-test demonstrated that the fungal community was more sensitive than the bacterial community to chemical fertilizer reduction combined with bio-organic fertilizer. Among the soil chemical parameters measured, only TN (total nitrogen) was significantly correlated with bacterial and fungal community composition. The T1 and T2 increased lettuce yield. Moreover, T1-T4 characterized reduced nitrate content and increased levels of soluble sugars and vitamin C in lettuce. Overall, the combined application of reduced chemical fertilizer and bio-organic fertilizer effectively improved soil fertility, microbial community structure, and lettuce yield and quality. These findings have valuable implications for vegetable safety and long-term environmental sustainability.The interactions among host-associated microbes and parasites can have clear consequences for disease susceptibility and progression within host individuals. Yet, empirical evidence for how these interactions impact parasite transmission between host individuals remains scarce. We address this scarcity by using a field mesocosm experiment to investigate the interaction between a systemic fungal endophyte, Epichloë coenophiala, and a fungal parasite, Rhizoctonia solani, in leaves of a grass host, tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum). Specifically, we investigated how this interaction impacted transmission of the parasite under field conditions in replicated experimental host populations. Epichloë-inoculated populations tended to have greater disease prevalence over time, though this difference had weak statistical support. More clearly, Epichloë-inoculated populations experienced higher peak parasite prevalences than Epichloë-free populations. Epichloë conferred a benefit in growth; Epichloë-inoculated populations had greater aboveground biomass than Epichloë-free populations. Using biomass as a proxy, host density was correlated with peak parasite prevalence, but Epichloë still increased peak parasite prevalence after controlling for the effect of biomass. We conducted a retrospective cohort study, which identified 116,043 hospitalized patients with
between 2000 and 2012 from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database and compared them with 447,839 matched inpatients who had never been diagnosed with
infection (at a 14 ratio, matched by age, gender, and index year). Their comparative risk of developing SLE was evaluated. The follow-up period was defined as the time from the initial diagnosis of
infection to the date of SLE diagnosis, or December 31, 2013. The incidence rates of SLE were assessed in people with and without
infection. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), with the uninfected group used as the reference.

The adjusted HR of SLE for the
group was 2.97 with 95% CI = 2.18-4.05 compared with the uninfected group. The risk was most significantly higher within 0.5 years after the
infection with an adjusted HR of 6.18 (95% CI = 3.82-9.97,
< 0.01). The adjusted HR for SLE from 0.5 to 2 years and from 2 to 5 years after
infection was 1.59 (95% CI = 0.70-3.59,
= 0.27) and 2.42 (95% CI = 1.22-4.81,
