Bariatric surgery is associated with significant weight loss and improvement in comorbid conditions but in rare cases can expose to complications requiring intensive nutritional care (INC). INC in this context is poorly described and no data are available concerning long-term impact.
We retrospectively reviewed charts of bariatric patients who were hospitalized in our institution between 2013 and 2018. Liproxstatin-1 molecular weight We identified patients with a postoperative complication requiring INC and we described their nutritional management (INC group). These patients were compared with controls matched to age, gender, preoperative BMI, and type of surgery selected from our database (control group). The primary endpoint was the percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) at 2.5 years. Secondary endpoints were improvement of co-morbidities, vitamin deficiencies, and depression/anxiety scores.
The INC group consisted of 18 patients among which 77.8% had sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Half of these patients underwent revisional surgery. The most common complication was fistula formation (66.7%). Patients in the INC group, compared to the control group, showed a significantly higher %TWL at 2.5 years (33.6% vs 26.1%, P = 0.03). There was no significant difference in either reduction of preoperative comorbidities or depression/anxiety scores between the two groups. The number of patients with more than three nutritional deficiencies was similar in both groups. Thiamine deficiency was only observed in the INC group.

Complications requiring INC after bariatric surgery occur mainly after revisional surgery and may increase long-term %TWL but have no impact on nutritional deficiencies or symptoms of anxiety/depression.This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and determinants of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among university students in Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 614 students from five universities in central Bangladesh. Data were collected on demographic information, immunization history, medical and blood transfusion history through the face-to-face interview. Blood samples were collected and screened for anti-HBsAg using ELISA, HBsAg Rapid Test-cassette, and immune chromatographic test. The overall seroprevalence of HBV infection was 5.0%, and vaccination coverage was 19.2% among the participants. Students having a history of surgery (OR 11.004, 95% CI 3.211-37.707), blood transfusion (OR 5.651, 95% CI 0.965-33.068), being married (OR 4.776, 95% CI 1.508-15.127), and not being vaccinated (OR 9.825, 95% CI 1.130-85.367) were at higher risk of being infected by HBV. This study showed the endemicity of HBV infection among the Bangladeshi population. Marriage, surgical or blood transfusion history, not being vaccinated were the determinants of HBV infection within the study population. Public health initiatives for preventing HBV infection at the university levels should be envisaged.Congenital anomalies are the main causes of infant death and disability. Previous studies have suggested that maternal exposure to particulate matter is related to congenital malformation. However, the conclusions of this study remain controversial. Hence, meta-analyses were performed to assess the relationship between maternal exposure to particulate matter and the risk of congenital anomalies. The Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases were systemically searched from inception until August 2020 to find articles related to birth defects and particulate matter. The pooled risk estimated for the combination of pollution outcomes was calculated for each study by performing fixed effects or random effects models. The existence of heterogeneity and publication bias in relevant studies was also examined. Thirty studies were included in the analysis. A statistically increased summary risk valuation was found. link2 PM10 exposure was associated with an increased risk of congenital heart disease, neural tube defects, and cleft lip with or without cleft palate (OR per 10 μg/m3 = 1.05, 95% CI, 1.03-1.07; OR per 10 μg/m3 = 1.04, 95% CI, 1.01-1.06; OR per 10 μg/m3 = 1.03, 95% CI, 1.01-1.06). In this study, ion exchange technology was investigated with the objective of reducing the fluoride content of the effluent from a coke wastewater treatment plant (26.7 mg F-/L). Two Al-doped exchange resins with chelating aminomethyl-phosphonic acid and iminodiacetic groups were assessed Al-doped TP260 and TP207 resins, respectively. The effect of resin dosage, varying from 5 to 25 g/L, was evaluated. F- removal was within the range 57.8-89.3% and 72.0-92.1% for Al-doped TP260 and TP207, respectively. A kinetic study based on a generalized integrated Langmuir kinetic equation fitted the experimental data (R2 > 0.98). link3 The parameters of the said kinetics met the optimal conditions for the ion exchange process, which seemed to be more favorable with Al-doped TP260 resin than with Al-doped TP207 resin, using the same resin dosage. A pot experiment with one Cd application (6 mg·kg-1) and five Se application levels (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 mg·kg-1) was conducted. The results showed that Se application increased the grain yield of winter wheat, especially at 5 mg·kg-1 under Cd stress. As Se was supplied at 5 (Se5) and 10 (Se10) mg·kg-1, the Cd concentrations in roots and shoots, including stems, spikes, glumes, and grains, decreased at different growth stages, and the decreases in grain were 46.1% and 70.9% respectively. Se5 and Se10 also significantly decreased the translocation factors of Cd from roots to shoots, roots to stems, stems to spikes, and glumes to grains, promoted the accumulation of Cd in roots, and inhibited the accumulation of Cd in shoots and final grains at different growth stages, and the accumulation of Cd in grains decreased by 16.9% and 68.1%, respectively. High levels of Se application (Se5 and Se10) decreased the concentrations and proportions of exchangeable Cd (EXC-Cd) and iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) oxide-bound Cd (R2O3-Cd) but increased the concentration and proportion of residual Cd (RES-Cd) in both soils with wheat and fallow soil at different growth stages. Therefore, under Cd stress, high levels of Se application reduced the shoot Cd concentration by inhibiting the uptake and transport of Cd from roots to shoots, and decreased the bioavailability of Cd in both soil with wheat and fallow by enhancing the transformation and distribution of RES-Cd from EXC-Cd and R2O3-Cd.This research article discusses properties such as density, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity of solar glycol with amine-functionalized graphene and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The hybrid nanofluid is prepared by dispersing the amine-functionalized graphene (AFG) and MWCNTs (5050 in % by weight ratio) in pure solar glycol. The AFG and MWCNTs are dispersed in different volume concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.15% through the classical two-step homogenizing technique. Good colloidal stability nanofluid are prepared with Gum Arabic (non-covalent) as the surfactant. The stability of nanofluids is ensured through scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectrometer, and zeta potential analyzer. The nanofluid thermal conductivity is measured with varying the nanomaterial loading from 0.05 to 0.15 vol% using a KD2 pro thermal analyzer. The thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of nanofluid augmentations are considerably with an increasing volume concentration of AFG and MWCNT loading. The thermal conductivity of the AFG-MWCNT-based hybrid nanofluid is augmented by 8.59% for the maximum concentration of 0.15 vol% at 50 °C. The electrical conductivity of the solar glycol-based nanofluids is enhanced linearly with increased operating temperatures. The maximum electrical conductivity enhancement attained is ~28.85% at a nanoparticle loading of 0.15 vol% and 70 °C.Microcystin, a cyanotoxin produced by Microcystis aeruginosa growing in eutrophic waters, can promote liver tumors in people ingesting contaminated water. To date, water treatment systems have not been effective in removing or degrading these cyanotoxins. In this work, we investigated the inhibitory activity of surfactants on the growth of M. aeruginosa and their application to extract the intracellular produced cyanotoxins. The experiments involving growth inhibition and extraction of cyanotoxins were carried out using the non-biodegradable surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in addition to other biodegradable surfactants. These were Tween 80 and surfactants derived from amino acids and peptides, respectively, from arginine, SDA, and hydrolyzed peptone, SDP. We demonstrated that the tested surfactants could be used to inhibit the growth of M. aeruginosa. At this point, CTAB and SDA proved to be the most competent surfactants in reducing cyanobacterial growth. Moreover, microcystins have been successfully removed from the water employing a cloud point extraction protocol based on the use of these surfactants and ammonium sulfate.Wastewater application for irrigation is a traditional and economic tool in developing nations. Yet prolonged use of wastewater for agricultural activities contributes to the accumulation of metals in both soil and vegetables. This study investigated the accumulation and contamination of vegetables with heavy metals ensuing from the application of wastewater from the Agra Canal and the associated risks posed to human health. Three sites across the Agra canal were selected for sampling (CW-1, CW-2, and CW-3), where untreated wastewater is being used to irrigate vegetables (spinach, coriander, radish, and garlic crops), for which tube-well water (TW) from a village served as the control site. Water, soil, and vegetable samples were collected from all sites. The presence in them of various metals, such as As, Pb, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Ni, was detected at all four sites. The greatest content of Mn was found in CW-1's water (7.91 mg/L), soil (633.77 mg/kg), and in spinach 368.12 (mg/kg) grown there. Significantly higher metal concentrations were observed in vegetables irrigated with wastewater than in tube-well-irrigated vegetables, with the metals ranked in accumulation as follows Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cr > Pb > As.
