This study examined the possible role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in symptoms of depression and other aspects of mood in 109 PWH and 43 seronegative participants aged 50 and older. Participants completed the Profile of Mood States (POMS) which measured six dimensions of mood and was normatively adjusted for sex. A model controlling for medical comorbidities and substance use diagnoses among PWH showed a significant interaction between BDNF and POMS subscales. Planned post hoc analyses revealed that lower BDNF was only associated with higher scores on Depression-Dejection and Confusion-Bewilderment POMS subscales among PWH and at small-to-medium effect sizes. Lower levels of BDNF were associated with AIDS diagnoses and CD4 count, but not with viremia or duration of infection. BDNF levels did not differ between the PWH and HIV - samples, and there were no significant correlations between BDNF and any POMS variable in the HIV - group. Findings implicate BDNF in the neuropathophysiology of specific depressive symptoms in the context of HIV disease. Future studies may examine whether BDNF levels change over time, are sensitive to other aspects of mood disorders in HIV, and are associated with markers of HIV-associated neural injury.
Overweight and obesity are now the most common high-risk conditions in pregnancy in the United States and increase risk of adverse outcomes during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum. Importantly, excess gestational weight gain is highly predictive of maternal postpartum weight retention and risk of overweight and obesity in mothers and their children later in life. This makes pregnancy a unique window of opportunity in the fight against obesity across the lifespan. This narrative review critically evaluates research on the efficacy of interventions targeting excess gestational weight gain, highlighting the potential of targeting psychological mechanisms to facilitate positive weight-related behavior change specifically in pregnancy. The PUBMED and PsycInfo databases were searched for relevant articles, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and randomized controlled trials with the primary or secondary aim of reducing gestational weight gain.

Higher socioeconomic status (SES) and non-Hispanic White (NHW) race/ethnicity are associated with higher treatment rates and longer overall survival (OS) among US patients with stage I-II pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. The proportion of OS disparities mediated through treatment disparities (PM) and the proportion predicted to be eliminated (PE) if treatment disparities were eliminated are unknown.

We analyzed 2007-2015 data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) census tract-level database and the National Cancer Database (NCDB) using causal mediation analysis methods to understand the extent to which treatment disparities mediate OS disparities. In the first set of decompositions, race/ethnicity was controlled for as a covariate proximal to SES, and lower SES strata were compared with the highest SES stratum. read more In the second set, an intersectional perspective was taken and each SES-race/ethnicity combination was compared with highest SES-NHW patients, who had the highest treatment rates and longest OS.

The SEER and NCDB cohorts contained 16,921 patients and 44,638 patients, respectively. When race/ethnicity was controlled for, PMs ranged from 43 to 48% and PEs ranged from 46 to 50% for various lower SES strata. When separately comparing each SES-race/ethnicity combination with the highest SES-NHW patients, results were similar for lower SES-NHW patients but differed markedly for non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic patients, for whom PMs ranged from 60 to 80% and PEs ranged from 55 to 75% for most lower SES strata.

These results suggest that efforts to reduce treatment disparities are worthwhile, particularly for NHB and Hispanic patients, and simultaneously point to the importance of non-treatment-related causal pathways.

Relevant studies published in 8 databases before March 2020 were retrieved and screened according to established inclusion criteria. The odds ratio (OR) with the 95% confidence interval (CI) was pooled to estimate the effect. Subgroup analyses were performed in terms of publication year, study design, location, sample size, definition of food hypersensitivity, definition of ASD, and study quality score. Furthermore, we stratified studies by participant sex and age to perform a more detailed analysis. This meta-analysis included 12 published articles with 434,809 subjects. A significant association was observed between food hypersensitivity and the risk of ASD (OR = 2.792, 95% CI 2.081-3.746). The risk of ASD among girls and subjects younger than 12 with food hypersensitivity may be greater than that among boys and those older than 12. The results of sensitivity analysis and publication bias analysis show that the association is relatively stable.Conclusion Our results showed a positive association between food hypersensitivity and autism spectrum disorder, and girls and subjects younger than 12 may be more sensitive to this association. The role of food hypersensitivity in the onset of ASD deserves more attention. Pyrazinamide (PZA) has a controversial safety profile in older patients. We aimed to assess the frequency and risk factors for adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in patients over 75 years of age treated for tuberculosis with or without PZA.

We conducted a retrospective monocentric study including patients aged over 75years treated for active tuberculosis between 2008 and 2018. The frequency, type, seriousness, and causality assessment of ADRs to anti-tuberculosis treatment were compared between patients receiving PZA or not. Risk factors for ADRs were investigated using univariable and multivariable analyses by logistic regression.

Among the 110 patients included, 54 (49.1%) received PZA (group 1) and 56 (50.9%) did not (group 2). ADRs to anti-tuberculosis drugs occurred in 31 patients (57.4%) in groups 1 and 15 (26.8%) in group 2 (p=0.003). PZA-related ADRs occurred in 40.7% of exposed patients. Frequency of renal ADRs was higher in group 1 (9.3% vs 0%; p=0.026). Rates of hepatic (18.5% vs 12.5%; p=0.38), digestive (22.2% vs 8.9%; p=0.054), and allergic (14.8% vs 5.4%; p=0.12) ADRs were numerically higher in group 1 although the differences were not statistically significant. Serious ADRs occurred more frequently in group 1 (24.1% vs 8.9%; p=0.03). The use of PZA was the only independent risk factor for ADRs to anti-tuberculosis drugs (odds ratio 3.75, 95% CI 1.5-9.6; p=0.0056). No risk factors for PZA-related ADRs were identified.

The presence of metal implants may reduce angiographic image quality due to automated beam adjustments. Digital variance angiography (DVA) is reported to be superior to digital subtraction angiography (DSA) with increased contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and better image quality. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether DVA could counterbalance the image quality impairment of lower-limb angiographies with metal implants.

From November 2019 to January 2020, 85 raw lower-limb iodine contrast angiograms of 12 patients with metal implants were processed retrospectively with DVA analyses. For objective comparison, CNR of DSA and DVA images was calculated and the ratio CNR

was determined. Visual image quality was evaluated in a paired comparison and by a five-grade Likert scale by three experienced radiologists.
