Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
If you have twins or children very close in age, a tandem double buggy is a great choice. They are narrower than side-by-side buggies and are ideal for small spaces such as doors, public transport, and rocky terrain.
Some can be converted into travel systems that take two carrycots or car seats for children. However, they can be heavier and longer than single pushchairs, and might feel less stable when as they bump up the kerbs.
Convertible
If you're looking for a convertible single-to-double stroller or want to add a second seat to an existing one, there's several options available. The Vista V2 from UPPAbaby is large, gorgeous stroller that can easily be converted from a single to double by adding the rumble seating (available separately). It is more expensive and less maneuverable because the second seat is positioned in front of the first seat. The Nuna Demi Grow is a similar option with great seating versatility but lacks under-seat storage when used in doubles mode.
Other alternatives include twin buggies with all-terrain wheels as well as joggers that have fixed wheels that can be used to carry two children. They are generally more expensive, however they're designed for long trips over rough terrain, and may have a higher resale value.
Reclining the seat independently
If you want a double stroller that can accommodate children of different age groups, you'll need one with independent seat recliner for both seats. This allows your child of a higher age to rest in the back while the baby sleeps in the bassinet, and reverse.
Think about the size of your pushchair, as this will determine how easy it is for you to navigate through doors and public transport. If you have narrow doors, it may be worthwhile to consider a side-by-side pushchair like the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the benefit of having a footprint similar to a single buggy, however it can take 2 seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies tend to be larger than side-by-side models, which makes them more difficult to maneuver up and down kerbs. However they can also accommodate a wider range of combinations of car seats, carrycots and seats and are a great option for twins and siblings of various age groups. They are also more expensive than single-to double buggies, but are a worthwhile purchase if you plan to keep it for a long time and have a good amount of resale value if you decide to sell it when your children are out of it.
This feature will allow you to place your child in an ideal position for naps or observation. This is crucial if your child is in the back seat and would like to nap while the older child prefers to sit up and observe the surroundings.
A few brands have an exclusive seat design that allows the back seat to completely recline into a nearly flat position which is perfect for newborns. For example the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating that can recline both the toddler seat included as well as the optional RumbleSeat into multiple positions so your kids can have a choice of where they will sit, and also comes with an excellent UPF 50+ canopy that has windows that peek out.
More spacious than twin buggies
They are perfect for siblings of different age groups, and you can move about without having to worry about your children touching. They are usually a little more spacious with one seat in front of the other. The seats can be reclined fully for newborns or in an upright position for toddlers.
A popular option is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which features the slimmest side-by-side design available and features an identical footprint to one buggy. It also has an adjustable handle, which makes it easier for parents of various heights to push, and a handbrake, which can be useful when you have to climb difficult hills. It is suitable from birth and is compatible with a range of car seats and carrycots. This means it makes an excellent travel system.
Another option is the iCandy Wave, which has the convenience of a single click to fold and can be used in duo or mono mode. Its clever frame can be expanded to accommodate a second chair and can be used to accommodate up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it a great choice for older siblings that would like to sit together. It's a bit longer than other models, yet it's light to steer and has soft suspension that can handle the kerbs.
There are also a variety of 3-wheeler inline tandems that are available Check out Phil and Teds' inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies, for example they provide stability and swift steering. These can often be folded into a single buggy in case you have a small space at home or you need to transport it from the car to the bus stop.
Be aware that a double wide buggy is heavier and bulkier than one that is compact. Make sure you know what you want prior to making a purchase. It is likely to be used on trains, buses, and subways frequently so it should be easy to operate and use. You may also have to juggle it on and off the car seat when taking your children to nursery or school so you'll need to ensure it's easy to maneuver in small spaces.
From birth, you are an ideal candidate
If you're expecting twins or have a second child after your first, you're likely to require an appropriate pushchair for the entire family. Double buggies tend to be a bit heavier, bulkier and more expensive than single strollers, however they are also easier to maneuver in narrower entrances or around obstacles like curbs. Many are also compatible with piggyback ride-along boards (either from the manufacturer or through an accessory purchase) so you can transport three children at once.
Tandem pushchairs put one child in the front of the other, and they're often a better choice if you have two kids who are similar in age to function well together. They're not foolproof. Siblings seated side-by-side may punch or kick one another and children with different heights may fight over who is sitting higher. This issue can be addressed by a tandem high-low design that elevates the seat to the rear. Your child's older one will not be seated on the bottom of the car and won't have much of a look out.
The iCandy Wave is a good option for parents who are looking for a convertible double buggy with a carrycot that can fit both a newborn and an older child. It has an innovative frame that expands in width when you add a second child seat. It can also fold flat for storage that is compact. The seats are cushioned and comfortable, the straps easy to fasten and the buckles some of the best we've seen on any of our tests. Both seats can recline independently and the canopies are large and generous with UPF 50+ protection and windows that can be seen from a distance.
The only drawback of the iCandy is that it's expensive, but a quality tandem will last for years and retain its resale value, which means you'll probably get back some of the cost in the end. It doesn't come with the same selection of seating options as some of our other top choices however the iCandy is a great choice for families that don't want to spend a fortune.
