In this study, soy, meat (mixture of beef and pork), and fish proteins (experiment 1) and soy, milk (casein), and egg proteins (experiment 2) were fed to rats with cellulose (CEL) and raffinose (RAF); the microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acid concentration in the cecum were determined. Egg protein feeding decreased the concentration of acetic acid and the richness and diversity of the cecum microbiota. RAF feeding increased the concentrations of acetic and propionic acids and decreased the richness and diversity of the cecum microbiota. When fed with CEL, the abundance of Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae, Akkermansiaceae and Tannerellaceae, and Erysipelotrichaceae enhanced with soy protein, meat and fish proteins, and egg protein, respectively. The effects of dietary proteins diminished with RAF feeding and the abundance of Bifidobacteriaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Lachnospiraceae increased and that of Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae decreased regardless of the protein source. These results indicate that, although the effect of prebiotics is more robust and distinctive, dietary protein sources may influence the composition and metabolic activities of the gut microbiota. The stimulatory effects of soy, meat, and egg proteins on Christensenellaceae, Akkermansiaceae, and Erysipelotrichaceae deserve further examination to better elucidate the dietary manipulation of the gut microbiota.
To report a rare case of aseptic abscess presenting as a subconjunctival abscess in an HLA-B51-positive patient with ulcerative colitis.

Adapting interventions to fit the implementation context is important to achieve the desired results. Harvest for Health is a home-based vegetable gardening intervention that pairs cancer survivors with certified Master Gardeners from the Cooperative Extension Service with the ultimate goal of increasing vegetable consumption and physical activity, and improving physical functioning and health-related quality-of-life. Harvest for Health has potential for widespread dissemination since Master Gardener Programs exist throughout the United States. However, state- and population-specific adaptations may be needed to improve intervention adoption by other Master Gardener Programs. Our primary objective was to adapt this evidence-informed intervention that was initially incepted in Alabama, for the drastically different climate and growing conditions of New Mexico using a recommended adaptation framework. Our secondary objective was to develop a study protocol to support a pilot test of the adapted intervention, Southwest Harvest for Health. The adaptation phase is a critical first step towards widespread dissemination, implementation, and scale-out of an evidence-based intervention. This paper describes the adaptation process and outcomes, and the resulting protocol for the ongoing pilot study that is currently following 30 cancer survivors and their paired Extension Master Gardener mentors.Despite the myriad benefits associated with regular physical activity (PA), few American adults accrue sufficient weekly PA. Although "lack of time" is often cited as a correlate of physical inactivity, a growing body of evidence suggests that, perhaps more importantly, people allocate their leisure-time to activities they find more enjoyable than PA. These findings underscore the need to devise physical activities that will be chosen over other enjoyable, but less healthy, behavioral alternatives. As a first step in this direction, we designed a group social PA play program for adults, known as PlayFit. The overarching philosophy of PlayFit is that fun and enjoyment are among the most important influences on PA adherence. In PlayFit, traditional sport games are modified to fulfill basic psychological needs, in a non-competitive, and non-contact environment. We will randomize 280 sedentary adults 18-50 years of age to 12-months of PlayFit or traditional group exercise, matching the groups on intensity, frequency, and duration. The primary outcomes include cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak), group adherence, and group enjoyment. We hypothesize that, at 6 months, cardiorespiratory fitness will have increased to the same extent in both groups, but at 12 months, only those randomized to PlayFit will have maintained their fitness through better adherence than Group Exercise - and this outcome will be mediated by enjoyment of the assigned group. Findings from this study could provide evidence that a focus on providing fun and enjoyable PA experiences for adults may be a viable route toward improving PA adherence. A simple, inexpensive PA intervention, such as PlayFit, may represent one such approach to do so.
HIV, heavy drinking, and smoking are all pro-inflammatory and increase risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Interventions that reduce alcohol use, smoking, or both in HIV-positive people could lower inflammation, CHD and death risk. Varenicline and cytisine are proven therapies for smoking cessation and may also reduce alcohol consumption. The comparative efficacy of varenicline and cytisine to reduce alcohol consumption has not been tested, nor has their comparative effectiveness been reported for smoking.

This paper describes the protocol of the Studying Partial agonists for Ethanol and Tobacco Elimination in Russians with HIV (St PETER HIV), a four-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial comparing effects of varenicline, cytisine, and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

The study is recruiting four hundred HIV-positive heavy drinking smokers interested in cutting down on alcohol and/or tobacco in St. Petersburg, Russia. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either active varenicline+NRT placebo, varenicline placebo+active NRT, active cytisine+NRT placebo, cytisine placebo+active NRT. All participants receive evidence-based counseling for alcohol and tobacco use, one active medication, and one placebo. Outcomes are 1) % heavy drinking days in the past month (primary study outcome at three months) and alcohol craving; 2) cigarettes per day (primary smoking outcome at 3 months) and 7-day point prevalence abstinence and; 3) inflammation, CHD risk, and mortality risk.

In this article, a Neural Network (NN)-based system capable of classifying pathologies of the lower train by the way of walking in a non-controlled scenario, with the ability to add new users without retraining the system is presented. All the signals are filtered and processed in order to extract the Gait Cycles (GCs), and those cycles are used as input for the NN. To optimize the network a random search optimization process has been performed. To test the system a database with 51 users and 3 visits per user has been collected. After some improvements, the algorithm can correctly classify the 92% of the cases with 60% of training data. This algorithm is a first approach of creating a system to make a first stage pathology detection without the requirement to move to a specific place.Accessibility to potentiostats is crucial for research development in electrochemistry, but their cost is the principal drawback for their massive use. With the aim to provide an affordable alternative for resource-constrained communities, we present a low-cost, portable electrochemical workstation that integrates an open-source potentiostat based on Arduino and a smartphone application. This graphical user interface allows easy control of electrochemical parameters and real-time visualization of the results. This potentiostat can perform the most used electrochemical techniques of cyclic and linear voltammetry and chronoamperometry, with an operating range of ±225 μA and ±1.50 V, and results that are comparable with those obtained with commercial potentiostats. Three applications reported here demonstrate the capacity and the good performance of this low-cost potentiostat as a teaching tool identification of redox pairs, electrochemical characterization of pencil graphite electrodes, and detection of heavy metals using an electrodeposited film of bismuth on the pencil graphite electrode. Furthermore, detailed schemes of the device and its software are entirely available, expecting to provide an open-source potentiostat easy to replicate to further support education in electrochemical fundamentals and instrumentation.
The care of children with cancer creates emotional, financial, and social impacts for their families. Information on the impact of childhood cancer (CC) on the family is scarce in Bangladesh. Thus, the study was set out to assess the impact of CC on the families in the local context.

This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2018 in three purposively selected tertiary hospitals. All the children diagnosed and treated at those hospitals during the study period were eligible for this study. Children undergoing bone marrow transplantation, or those who were seriously ill, or those transferred to another hospital, or those who died were excluded or whose parents were not willing to participate. A total of 242 children were enrolled in the study and their parents were included in the interview. Measures included socio-demographic attributes, financial burden, personal strain, social impact, mastery, and treatment cost. Informed written consent was obtained from the parents and a face-to-face interview was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire based on (i) About you and your-family and (ii) the Impact-On-Family (IOF) scale.
