A corrected diagnosis of the genus is provided and implications for exploring the functions of rimoportulae are discussed.Bioturbation by omni-benthivorous fish often causes sediment resuspension and internal nutrient loading, which boosts phytoplankton growth and may lead to a shift of clear water lakes to a turbid state. Removal of large-sized omni-benthivorous individuals is a lake restoration measure that may revert lakes from a turbid to a clear water state, yet the rapid reproduction of small omni-benthivorous fish in tropical and subtropical shallow lakes may impede such lake recovery. In lake restoration, also a combination of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) and planting submerged macrophytes has been used that may synergistically improve lake water quality. How the combined effect works in the presence of small omni-benthivorous fish has not been studied, which is needed given the high abundances of small omni-benthivorous fish in (sub)tropical lakes. We conducted a two-by-two factorial mesocosm experiment with and without the submerged macrophytes Vallisneria natans and with and without LMB, all in the presence of small crucian carp. At the end of the experiment, turbidity in the V. natans, LMB and combined LMB + V. natans treatments had decreased by 0.8%, 30.3% and 30.9%, respectively, compared with the controls. In addition, the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) release from the sediment in the combined LMB + V. natans treatments had decreased substantially, by 97.4% and 94.3%, respectively, compared with the control. These N and P fluxes were also significantly lower in the combined LMB + V. natans treatments than in the sole LMB treatment (88.1% and 82.3%) or the V. natans treatment (93.2% and 90.3%). Cyanobacteria in the overlying water in the combined LMB + V. natans treatments significantly decreased by 84.1%, 63.5% and 37.0%, respectively, compared with the control and the sole LMB and V. natans treatments. CTx-648 mw Our results show that LMB and submerged macrophytes complement each other in effectively improving the water quality, even in the presence of small omni-benthivorous fish.The key designing of new breeds of the adsorbents aimed to improve the physical, chemical and textural morphology along with surface functionalization, selectivity toward the contaminants, and regenerations efficiency. In this aspect, two adsorbents named wet oxidative and ultrasonicated zirconium impregnated composite, have been synthesized through two routes, i.e., wet oxidation and ultrasonication. In wet oxidation method, carbon-based materials are oxidized using an oxidant followed by impregnation, while in ultrasonication assisted route, the impregnation is carried out using acoustic phenomenon. The characterization study revealed that the wet oxidation process is more competent in impregnating zirconium and developing diverse porosity and functionalities. The maximum adsorption capacity of wet oxidative adsorbent was 812 mg/g for Reactive Blue 19 and 203.18 mg/g for Methylene Blue, that accentuated the efficiency of the adsorbent over raw activated carbon. The electrostatic interaction, hydrogen-bonding and ligand exchange phenomenon are the involved adsorption mechanism for dyes. The regeneration study finally asserts that the wet oxidative adsorbent shows an insignificant decrease in its capacity up to the 5th-cycle (i.e., 87.67% removal at 5th cycle) as compared to raw AC (46.71% removal at 5th cycle). Further, a continuous fixed-bed column study revealed a significant correlation between experimental breakthrough data and kinetic data. Thus, the developed adsorbent has a sedulous adsorption capacity to remove the most stubborn toxic dyes and can be used in industrial-scale applications.Waste paper fly ash (WPFA) and bottom ash (WPBA), derived from fluidised bed combustion of a paper recycling plant, exhibit cementitious properties owing to its mineralogical composition, and hence, could be proposed as a hydraulic binder. However, it may also contain some traces of heavy metals. Considering it is necessary to understand the effect of reusing any kind of waste on the environment, this study proposes of reusing WPFA/WPBA as a hydraulic road binder by evaluating its mineralogical composition and leaching activity. Chemical, physical, and mineralogical properties of raw WPFA/WPBA and the microstructural evolution of binders were carried out. Results showed that both ashes undergo hydration reactions while showing some cementitious properties by forming C-S-H gel, Friedel's salt, and calcite. According to the European standard EN 13282-1, both WPFA and WPBA can be categorised as N1 considering they reach 5.3 and 3.6 MPa, respectively, at 56 days. Furthermore, the mechanical performance of various soils was improved by using WPFA and WPBA as a binder. From the environmental point of view, the amount of barium in WPFA and WPBA, which is the main problem, was significantly decreased by using these ashes as a binder.Industrial parks provide opportunities for Process Integration among different enterprises. Inter-Plant Water Network Integration is an effective strategy for water conservation. However, increased interplant linkages can make the entire system vulnerable to cascading failures in case of loss of water flow in some plants. The potential indirect impact of water shortages on such integrated systems may not be evident without the use of appropriate models. This work defines inoperability as the fractional loss of water flow relative to normal operations. A comparison between the applicability of demand-driven versus supply-driven Inoperability Input-output Model (IIM) is conducted. Then, a Vulnerability Assessment Framework which integrates vulnerability indicators into the Dynamic Input-Output Model (DIIM) is developed to analyse failure propagation in water networks in an industrial park. The DIIM is then applied to simulate the cascading effects of disturbances. From a time perspective, the vulnerabilities of the industrial parks With Integrated Optimal Water Network (WWN) and Without Integrated Optimal Water Network (WOWN) are assessed considering robustness, adaptability, and recoverability as the indicators. The results indicate that supply-driven IIM is more suitable for cascading failure analysis of water networks. The average inoperability at 16% from supply-driven IIM is higher than that from demand-driven IIM. In the freshwater disturbance scenario, the dependence of the plant on freshwater is proportional to the rate of inoperability change, the time to reach a new equilibrium. In this study, the robustness of WWN is about fivefold that of WOWN, but the recovery rate is only one-sixth of the latter. This work can help identify system vulnerabilities and provide a scientific insight for the development of park-wide water management strategies.
Detection of disseminated cancer cells (DCC) in bone marrow (BM) of patients with early-stage NSCLC has been associated with poor outcome. However, the phenotype, and hence relevant therapy targets, of DCCs in BM are unknown. We therefore compared a classical pan-Cytokeratin (CK) antibody for DCC detection with an anti-EpCAM antibody that may also detect more stem-like cells and tested whether assay positivity impacts on the survival of NSCLC patients.
We prospectively collected BM aspirates from 104 non-metastasized NSCLC patients that underwent potentially curative tumor resection from 2011 to 2016 at the Department of Thoracic Surgery of the University Hospital and Hospital Barmherzige Brüder in Regensburg. DCCs were detected by staining with the pan anti-CK antibody A45-B/B3 and the anti-EpCAM antibody HEA-125. We analyzed the association between detection of DCCs and clinicopathological characteristic and patient outcome.
CK + and EpCAM + DCCs were detected in 45.2% and 52.9% of patients, respectiv their in-depth molecular analysis for detection of novel therapy targets.Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging pathogen in industrialized countries. HEV infections in humans are mainly related to the HEV-3 genotype, predominant in Europe and widespread in wild boars' food products. However, there are little relevant data around HEV prevalence in wild boars, although they are considered the main HEV reservoir and used for typical food products such as liver sausages. Our study aimed to assess HEV occurrence and genetic variability in Calabrian wild boars hunted in the central and ionic area of Catanzaro's province. A total of 86 wild boar liver samples were analyzed showing an overall HEV RNA prevalence of 26.7% (23/86). All positive samples were characterized molecularly as genotype 3 and predicted as HEV-3c subtype despite the shortness of fragment employed for the molecular analysis. This data is in line with previous studies conducted in Europe highlighting the public health concern of these results. Biomolecular methods performed in our study detected only the HEV RNA positivity of analyzed samples without information about the virus viability. Consequently, it is not possible to fully estimate the risk related to the consumption of wild boar's liver sausages or wild boar meat products. Our results highlight the need for further studies in order to investigate the virus viability and to link wild boar's meat consumption with HEV human seroprevalence in Italian regions (Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania and Calabria) where typical wild boar's products are consumed. In this way, the Competent Authorities could perform a complete risk assessment, implement risk management and establish proper measures to ensure the public health and prevent relative human disease.In this three-year study we examined the effect on work ability in a cohort of workers before and after the implementation of a workplace intervention based on the APHIRM (A Participative Hazard Identification and Risk Management) toolkit. Primary analysis was conducted to detect changes in mean work ability scores between baseline and three-year follow-up for all workers who completed the surveys (matched and unmatched), and all workers who were ≥50 years of age (matched and unmatched). There were no significant differences between the two time periods. A secondary analysis was undertaken to examine associations between risk factors and work ability scores. This identified that six of the 18 psychosocial risk factors, and three of the eight physical risk factors associated with reduced work ability at baseline were no longer significant. These results indicate that the APHIRM toolkit may be effective in identifying hazards which, if addressed, could contribute to the maintenance of work ability over time.Exposure assessment is critical for understanding musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk. Previous reviews summarized the tools available for single-task exposure assessment, however no reviews summarize tools available to assess the accumulation or aggregation of exposure associated with the performance of multiple tasks (i.e., multi-task assessment). We address this gap by using a scoping review methodology to 1) summarize the theories explaining how multi-task exposures may lead to MSDs, and 2) summarize the models and tools available to assess multi-task exposures, stratified based on prevailing theories. Using a systematic search strategy, 3230 articles were identified, of which 34 were retained for data extraction. Of the retained articles, 13 described MSD causation theories, 12 described mathematical models (not yet accessible as tools), six described readily accessible tools, and three described both theories and a model or tool. We summarized the state-of-the-art in multi-task exposure assessment and highlight the need for more tools that assess muscle fatigue and inform on recovery.
