Our results revealed the induction of bacterial growth in response to cocultivation. Additionally, intracellular metabolomic analyses associated high K. brevis levels with higher levels of aromatic compounds and lipids. These findings reveal water column microbial and chemical characteristics with potentially important implications for understanding HAB onset and duration.Previous studies indicate that obesity is an important contributor to the proceeding of thyroid cancer (TC) with limited knowledge of the underlying mechanism. Here, we hypothesize that molecules affected by obesity may play roles in the development of TC. To test the hypothesis above, we first conducted a large-scale literature-based data mining to identify genes influenced by obesity and genes related to TC. Then, a mega-analysis was conducted to study the expression changes of the obesity-specific genes in the case of TC, using 16 independent TC array-expression datasets (783 TC cases and 439 healthy controls). After that, pathway analysis was performed to explore the functional profile of the selected target genes and their potential connections with TC. We identified 1,036 genes associated with TC and 534 regulated by obesity, demonstrating a significant overlap (N = 176, p-value = 4.07e-112). Five out of the 358 obesity-specific genes, FABP4, CFD, GHR, TNFRSF11B, and LTF, presented significantly decreased expression in TC patients (LFC less then -1.44; and p-value less then 1e-7). Multiple literature-based pathways were identified where obesity could promote the pathologic development of TC through the regulation of these five genes and INS levels. To evaluate automated measurements of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) using the Level Sets macro (LSM) in ImageJ as compared with the Cirrus optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) inbuilt algorithm and the Kanno-Saitama macro (KSM).

The eyes of healthy volunteers were scanned four times consecutively on the Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 system. The FAZ metrics (area, perimeter, and circularity) were measured manually and automatically by the Cirrus inbuilt algorithm, the KSM, and the LSM. The accuracy and repeatability of all methods and agreement between automated and manual methods were evaluated.

The LSM segmented the FAZ with an average Dice coefficient of 0.9243. Compared with the KSM and the Cirrus inbuilt algorithm, the LSM outperformed them by 0.02 and 0.19, respectively, for Dice coefficients. Both the LSM (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.908; coefficient of variation [CoV] = 9.664%) and manual methods (ICC ≥ 0.921, CoV ≤ 8.727%) showed excellent repeatability for the FAZ area, whereas the other methods presented moderate to good repeatability (ICC ≤ 0.789, CoV ≥ 15.788%). Agreement with manual FAZ area measurement was excellent for both the LSM and KSM but not for the Cirrus inbuilt algorithm (LSM, ICC = 0.930; KSM, ICC = 0.928; Cirrus, ICC = 0.254).

The LSM exhibited greater accuracy and reliability compared to the KSM and inbuilt automated methods and may be an improved and accessible option for automated FAZ segmentation.

To evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effect of a multi-pressure dial (MPD) at targeted negative pressure settings.

Prospective, intrasubject controlled study of 65 healthy subjects randomized to receive no negative pressure for 60 minutes or negative pressure application at designated levels of 25%, 50%, and 75% of baseline IOP for 20 minutes each. The main outcome measure was mean IOP with application of negative pressure.

In the study eye group, from a baseline IOP of 15.8 ± 3.6 mm Hg, the mean IOP was 13.5 ± 3.4, 11.5 ± 3.1, and 10.2 ± 2.7 mm Hg with negative pressure settings of 25%, 50% and 75%, respectively. In the control eye group, from a baseline IOP of 15.5 ± 3.0 mm Hg, the mean IOP values at the same time points, without negative pressure, were 15.6 ± 3.0, 15.5 ± 2.5 and 15.3 ± 2.4 mm Hg. The difference between the mean IOPs of the two groups was significantly different at all negative pressure settings (
< 0.001) in comparison with baseline. There was one minor adverse event, a corneal abrasion, that was unrelated to device wear.

Negative pressure application to the periocular space with a multi-pressure dial can produce titratable IOP reduction while the device is worn with active negative pressure. To our knowledge, this technology represents the first nonpharmacologic, nonlaser, nonsurgical method for IOP reduction.

Recent retrospective clinical and animal studies suggest that cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) is important in glaucoma pathogenesis. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and CSFP are the driving components of translaminar pressure (TLP = IOP - CSFP), which acts across the lamina cribrosa (LC) thickness to create the translaminar pressure gradient (TLPG = TLP/LC thickness).

We developed an implantable wireless telemetry system based on a small piezoelectric sensor with low temporal drift. IOP, measured in the anterior chamber, and intracranial pressure (ICP), measured in the brain parenchyma (as a surrogate for CSFP) were measured at 200 Hz in three male rhesus macaques (nonhuman primates, NHPs) on a 10% duty cycle (15 seconds of every 150-second period). Three-dimensional LC thickness was autosegmented as the mean thickness of the visible hyperreflective band in 48 radial spectral-domain optical coherence tomography b-scans centered on the optic nerve head.

Results indicated the rank order of IOP, ICP, TLP, and TLPG for waking, sleeping, and 24-hour periods averaged across all days.
