The increased demand for chicken meat products has led to chickens with increased growth rates and heavier slaughter weights. This has had unintentional negative effects on the genetics of these animals, such as spontaneous, idiopathic muscle abnormalities. There has also been a shift in customer preference towards products from alternative farming systems such as organic and free-range. Indigenous purebred chickens, such as the Polverara, show potential in these systems as they are adapted to more extensive systems. The aim of the present study was to characterize the meat quality traits of the Polverara, by comparing the proximate composition and amino acid profile with that of a commercial Hybrid. In addition, the lipid and protein oxidation was analyzed after eight days of storage. A total of 120 leg meat samples, 60 Polverara and 60 Hybrid were analyzed. Polverara exhibited higher protein content, lower lipid content, and a better amino acid profile. These results indicate that the Polverara has better nutritional meat quality. However, Polverara also showed higher levels of lipid and protein oxidation. Therefore, further research is needed, especially in regards to the fatty acid profile and mineral content of the meat, which is known to affect oxidative stability.Pharmacy staff can serve an important role educating patients about emergency contraceptive pills (ECP), particularly ulipristal acetate (UPA), which requires a prescription. We conducted a secondary analysis of a previously completed mystery client study, assessing accuracy of information provided by pharmacy staffers to patients inquiring by telephone about filling a prescription for UPA. From the period December 2013 to July 2014, researchers used a mystery client methodology, contacting 198 retail pharmacies in Hawai'i. Researchers posed as patients or providers attempting to fill a prescription for UPA. During the course of the call, they asked about differences between UPA and levonorgestrel ECPs. Nearly half of all pharmacy staffers were unfamiliar with UPA. The majority of responses describing differences between the medications were incorrect or misleading, such as responses implying that UPA is an abortifacient. Lack of familiarity and incorrect information provided by pharmacy staffers may act as additional barriers in patient access to UPA. Health practitioners prescribing UPA should ensure patients receive evidence-based counseling at the time of prescription, while efforts should also be made to improve pharmacy staff familiarity with emergency contraceptive options.Based on first-principle calculations, the mechanical anisotropy and the electronic and optical properties of seven kinds of carbon materials are investigated in this work. These seven materials have similar structures they all have X-type structures, with carbon atoms or carbon clusters at the center and stacking towards the space. A calculation of anisotropy shows that the order of elastic anisotropy in terms of the shear modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of these seven carbon materials with similar structure is diamond less then supercubane less then T carbon less then Y carbon less then TY carbon less then cubane-diyne less then cubane-yne. As these seven carbon materials exhibit cubic symmetry, Young's modulus has the same anisotropy in some major planes, so the order of elastic anisotropy in the Young's modulus of these seven main planes is (111) plane less then (001) plane = (010) plane = (100) plane less then (011) plane = (110) plane = (101) plane. It is also due to the fact that their crystal structure has cubic symmetry that the elastic anisotropy in the shear modulus and the Poisson's ratio of these seven carbon materials on the seven major planes are the same. Among the three propagation directions of [100], [110], and [111], the [110] propagation direction's anisotropic ratio of the sound velocity of TY carbon is the largest, while the anisotropic ratio of the sound velocity of cubane-diyne on the [100] propagation direction is the smallest. In addition, not surprisingly, the diamond has the largest Debye temperature, while the TY carbon has the smallest Debye temperature. Finally, TY carbon, T carbon and cubane-diyne are also potential semiconductor materials for photoelectric applications owing to their higher or similar absorption coefficients to GaAs in the visible region.Determining which patients with early-stage breast cancer should receive chemotherapy is an important clinical issue. Chemotherapy has several adverse side effects, impacting on quality of life, along with significant economic consequences. There are a number of multi-gene prognostic signatures for breast cancer recurrence but there is less evidence that these prognostic signatures are predictive of therapy benefit. Biomarkers that can predict patient response to chemotherapy can help avoid ineffective over-treatment. The aim of this work was to assess if the OncoMasTR prognostic signature can predict pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and to compare its predictive value with other prognostic signatures EndoPredict, Oncotype DX and Tumor Infiltrating Leukocytes. Gene expression datasets from ER-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer patients that had pre-treatment biopsies, received neoadjuvant chemotherapy and an assessment of pCR were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus r in ER-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer patients.The aim of this study is to obtain a better understanding of the association between the frequency of nurses' exposure to workplace aggression from patients and their levels of burnout. In particular, we seek to shed light on the role of the availability of follow-up counseling in organizations after critical incidents in mitigating the adverse relationships between physical and verbal aggression and nurses' burnout. A total of 582 nurses reported how frequently they had experienced physical and verbal aggression from patients in the last 12 months and whether they had the opportunity to receive follow-up counseling in their organization. In addition, nurses rated the extent to which they experienced each of the three dimensions of burnout (i.e., emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment). The results showed that both physical and verbal aggression were substantially related to the burnout dimensions. Furthermore, we found that the availability of follow-up counseling in organizations attenuated the relationships between physical aggression and all three burnout dimensions. While we found that the availability of follow-up counseling moderated the relationship between verbal aggression depersonalization, the moderating effects were not significant for emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment. The findings indicate that the availability of follow-up counseling might help minimize the adverse impact of exposure to aggression from patients on nurses' mental health.The recycling and treatment of wastewater using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has been attracting significant attention as a way to control energy crises and water pollution simultaneously. Despite all efforts, MFCs are unable to produce high energy or efficiently treat pollutants due to several issues, one being the anode's material. The anode is one of the most important parts of an MFC. Recently, different types of anode materials have been developed to improve the removal rate of pollutants and the efficiency of energy production. In MFCs, carbon-based materials have been employed as the most commonly preferred anode material. An extensive range of potentials are presently available for use in the fabrication of anode materials and can considerably minimize the current challenges, such as the need for high quality materials and their costs. The fabrication of an anode using biomass waste is an ideal approach to address the present issues and increase the working efficiency of MFCs. Furthermore, the current challenges and future perspectives of anode materials are briefly discussed.Novel strategies to treat cancer effectively without adverse effects on the surrounding normal tissue are urgently needed. Marine sponges provide a natural and renewable source of promising anti-tumor agents. Here, we investigated the anti-tumor activity of Aerothionin and Homoaerothionin, two bromotyrosines isolated from the marine demosponge Aplysina cavernicola, on two mouse pheochromocytoma cells, MPC and MTT. To determine the therapeutic window of these metabolites, we furthermore explored their cytotoxicity on cells of the normal tissue. Both metabolites diminished the viability of the pheochromocytoma cell lines significantly from a concentration of 25 µM under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Treatment of MPC cells leads moreover to a reduction in the number of proliferating cells. To confirm the anti-tumor activity of these bromotyrosines, 3D-pheochromocytoma cell spheroids were treated with 10 µM of either Aerothionin or Homoaerothionin, resulting in a significant reduction or even complete inhibition of the spheroid growth. Both metabolites reduced viability of normal endothelial cells to a comparable extent at higher micromolar concentration, while the viability of fibroblasts was increased. Piperidic acid Our in vitro results show promise for the application of Aerothionin and Homoaerothionin as anti-tumor agents against pheochromocytomas and suggest acceptable toxicity on normal tissue cells.OBJECTIVES Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered a well-known pathology that is determined without using alcohol and has emerged as a growing public health problem. Lipotoxicity is known to promote hepatocyte death, which, in the context of NAFLD, is termed lipoapoptosis. The severity of NAFLD correlates with the degree of hepatocyte lipoapoptosis. Protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTP) including PTP1B and Low molecular weight PTP (LMPTP), are negative regulators of the insulin signaling pathway and are considered a promising therapeutic target in the treatment of diabetes. In this study, we hypothesized that the inhibition of PTP1B and LMPTP may potentially prevent hepatocyte apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress onset, following lipotoxicity induced using a free fatty acid (FFA) mixture. METHODS HepG2 cells were cultured in the presence or absence of two PTP inhibitors, namely MSI-1436 and Compound 23, prior to palmitate/oleate overloading. Apoptosis, ER stress, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dynamics were then evaluated by either MUSE or RT-qPCR analysis. RESULTS The obtained data demonstrate that the inhibition of PTP1B and LMPTP prevents apoptosis induced by palmitate and oleate in the HepG2 cell line. Moreover, mitochondrial dynamics were positively improved following inhibition of the enzyme, with concomitant oxidative stress reduction and ER stress abrogation. CONCLUSION In conclusion, PTP's inhibitory properties may be a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of FFA-induced lipotoxicity in the liver and ultimately in the management of the NAFLD condition.In this review, we discuss the growing literature demonstrating robust and pervasive associations between the microbiome and metabolome. We focus on the gut microbiome, which harbors the taxonomically most diverse and the largest collection of microorganisms in the human body. Methods for integrative analysis of these "omics" are under active investigation and we discuss the advances and challenges in the combined use of metabolomics and microbiome data. Findings from large consortia, including the Human Microbiome Project and Metagenomics of the Human Intestinal Tract (MetaHIT) and others demonstrate the impact of microbiome-metabolome interactions on human health. Mechanisms whereby the microbes residing in the human body interact with metabolites to impact disease risk are beginning to be elucidated, and discoveries in this area will likely be harnessed to develop preventive and treatment strategies for complex diseases.
