A 35-year-old Japanese male (Case 1), a 50-year-old Japanese woman (Case 2) and a 34-year-old Japanese man (Case 3) presented with dysphagia, pharyngeal pain and heartburn, respectively. Upper endoscopic examination revealed submucosal tumors in the esophagus (Case 1 and 2) and gastroesophageal junction (Case 3). Subsequent endoscopic examination revealed perforation of the cyst into the surface of the esophageal mucosa (Case 2). Surgical resection was performed in all cases. Histopathological examinations revealed that the submucosal cysts were covered by respiratory-type ciliated epithelium without atypia. Cartilage and bronchial glands were not observed in any of the cases. The present review of the clinicopathological characteristics of bronchogenic cysts of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction revealed that males and females were equally affected. The median age of the patients was 34.5 years with a wide age distribution. The most common main complaint was dysphagia. A pre-operative diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst is difficult because no specific imaging features are present. As surgical resection is recommended for this lesion, recognition of the clinicopathological features of bronchogenic cysts is important for an accurate pre-operative diagnosis.The early detection of breast cancer enables the use of less aggressive treatment and increases patient survival. The transmembrane glycoprotein mucin 1, which is also known as cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3), is aberrantly glycosylated and overexpressed in a variety of epithelial cancers, and serves a crucial role in the progression of the disease. CA15-3 is currently used as a marker of breast cancer. In the present study, CA15-3 concentrations in saliva and blood of patients with breast cancer were evaluated to test new assays to detect salivary CA15-3 in addition to ELISA and its diagnostic value. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports of the use of chemiluminescence assay (CLIA) and electrochemiluminescence assay (ECLIA) in saliva. Saliva and blood were collected on the same day from patients with breast cancer (n=26) and healthy controls (n=28). For each subject, the level of serum CA15-3 was measured using ECLIA, and the level of salivary CA15-3 was measured using ECLIA, CLIA and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). ELISA and CLIA were able to detect CA15-3 in saliva; however, ECLIA could not detect salivary CA15-3. There was no significant difference between the mean serum and salivary CA15-3 levels in patients with breast cancer or healthy controls. The levels of CA15-3 were highest for luminal breast cancer subtypes and stage IV cases. A moderate correlation was observed between salivary and serum CA15-3 levels as measured by ELISA in breast cancer patients (r=0.56; P=0.0047). The results demonstrated that ECLIA was not a good method to detect salivary CA15-3, although it is the gold standard for detecting serum CA15-3. The presence of CA15-3 in saliva was confirmed, and this will be useful in future research. Further investigations are necessary to confirm the ability to detect salivary CA15-3 and its correlation with serum CA15-3.The present study investigated the clinical significance afforded by locoregional surgery in improving the prognosis of primary metastatic testicular cancer (pMTC). The population-based Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database was used as the primary source of data in the present study. Stratification analysis was employed to identify the effects of testicular surgery on testicular cancer-specific survival and overall survival. Propensity score matching and Cox regression models were then employed to find and evaluate the extent of improvements to the survival of patients with pMTC by testicular surgery. The median testicular cancer-specific survival and overall survival in the surgery group were 10% higher than those in the group without surgery. Testicular surgery was demonstrated to have provided a survival advantage for patients with a single metastasis in the bone or brain, but not in the liver or lung. When combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, surgery significantly improved the survival of patients. However, according to the surgical outcome based on molecular subtypes, when deciding on the surgery for patients with metastatic testicular cancer, only human chorionic gonadotropin and lactate dehydrogenase, and not α-fetoprotein should be considered. Surgery serves a significant role in the management of non-seminoma, whereas its role in the management of seminoma is far more limited. A questionnaire survey was conducted using PGSAS-45 for curative gastric cancer gastrectomy cases at Kanazawa Medical University Hospital. The questionnaire data were combined with patient background data, anonymized and moved to an unlinked file for patient privacy. Using this dataset, non-recurrent cases of distal partial gastrectomy were extracted and divided into two groups, stage IA or IB patients (group E), and stage IIA or higher (group A). link2 The main outcome measures (MOMs) of PGSAS-45 were compared between the two groups. link3 The participants in the present study included 35 cases in group E and 22 cases in group A. The results of a univariate analysis to compare the MOMs between the two groups showed that only the dumping subscale was significantly different in group A and was judged to be caused by the underlying bias of the background factor. There were no MOMs with significant differences in the pathological stage based on multiple regression analyses. In cases of distal partial gastrectomy, the PGS and quality of life (QoL) of patients following advanced gastric cancer surgery were similar to those of patients with early gastric cancer. In contrast, for early-stage gastric cancer cases, the present study suggests that it is necessary to distinguish metastasis-negative cases to indicate an appropriate, function-preserving curative gastrectomy.The present report describes a case of a 68-year-old male patient with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). After cytotoxic chemotherapy of three regimens following 22 months of treatment with EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), including osimertinib, the patient underwent S-1 treatment. Despite a decrease in carcinoembryonic antigen 1 month after initiating S-1 treatment, the patient developed cardiac tamponade. The evaluation of pericardial effusion confirmed small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) transformation. Subsequently, a combination therapy of carboplatin and etoposide was administered, which led to a marked improvement in imaging. A total of 17 articles were included in the present study obtained from PubMed, Web of Science, Wanfang data, SinoMed and CNKI databases. Odd ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the prognostic significance of Fascin expression in patients with colorectal cancer, and the association between Fascin expression and clinicopathological factors. There was a significant correlation between high Fascin expression and poor overall survival rates in patients with colorectal cancer (OR=0.48; 95% CI, 0.38-0.60; P less then 0.000001). The meta-analysis showed that the expression of Fascin was ectal cancer. Sex-determining region Y-box 2 (SOX2) is a master transcription factor regulating the self-renewal, maintenance of stem cell properties and pluripotency of embryonic stem cells, and recent studies revealed that SOX2 plays important roles in cancer growth and progression in several types of carcinomas, including small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the lung and oesophagus. Few studies to date have analysed the association between SOX2 and endometrioid carcinoma, whereas the expression of SOX2 in small-cell NEC of the endometrium has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to analyse the expression status of SOX2, p16 and paired-box gene (PAX) 8, a useful Müllerian marker, in endometrial small-cell NEC. A total of 4 patients with small-cell NEC of the endometrium were enrolled (median age, 70 years). Immunohistochemical studies revealed SOX2 expression in 3 patients and p16 expression in all patients.
