Clinical data show that aneurysm rupture causes high mortality in aged men. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) were reported to regulate endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) which play a vital role in repairing endothelial damage and maintaining vascular integrity. This study identified a novel miRNA regulator for the functions of EPCs in aneurysm repair.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) model was established on Sprague-Dawley rats which later underwent antagomiR-222 treatment. The histopathological changes of AAA rats were examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Flow cytometry was performed to quantify EPCs in peripheral blood and identify EPCs isolated from the rat femur. The potential target of miR-222-3p was predicted by TargetScan v7.2 and validated by Dual-luciferase reporter assay. The effects of miR-222-3p and ADIPOR1 on the migration, invasion and tube formation of EPCs were evaluated by wound healing, Transwell and tube formation assays. The expressions of miR-222-3p and ADIPOR1 in aortic aneurysm tissues and EPCs were assessed by qRT-PCR or Western blot.

AAA exhibited histopathological abnormality, a decreased number of EPCs in the peripheral blood and an increased miR-222-3p expression. AntagomiR-222 injection reversed all these phenomena in AAA rats. Upregulating miR-222-3p expression inhibited the migration, invasion, and tube formation of EPCs, and the expressions of ADIPOR1 and phosphorylated-AMKP, while downregulating miR-222-3p expression exerted opposite effects in EPCs. ADIPOR1 was identified as a target gene of miR-222-3p. Overexpressing ADIPOR1 abrogated the effects of miR-222-3p upregulation on EPCs.

Given that female mosquitoes are vectors of many deadly diseases and can quickly proliferate, understanding how male nutrition impacts female fecundity could be of critical importance. To uncover the relationship between nutrition in adult male mosquitoes and its impacts on reproductive physiology, we reared larvae of the Northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens, on a standard lab diet and divided adult males among three different dietary treatments low (3%), moderate (10%), and high (20%) sucrose. We found that although overall body size did not differ among treatments, one-week-old males raised on the 3% sucrose diet had significantly smaller male accessory glands (MAGs) compared to males that consumed the 10% and the 20% sucrose diets. Diet affected whole-body lipid content but did not affect whole-body protein content. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we found that diet altered the metabolic composition of the MAGs, including changes in lactic acid, formic acid, and glucose. We also observed changes in protein and lipid abundance and composition in MAGs. Females who mated with males on the 3% diet were found to produce significantly fewer larvae than females who had mated with males on the 10% diet. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the diet of adult male mosquitoes clearly affects male reproductive physiology and female fecundity.The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) and solute carrier (SLC) transporter families consist of common drug transporters that mediate the efflux and uptake of drugs, respectively, and play an important role in the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs in vivo. Methotrexate (MTX), the first-choice treatment for RA, can reduce the level of inflammation, prevent joint erosion and functional damage, and greatly reduce pain in RA patients. However, many patients show resistance to MTX, greatly affecting the efficacy of MTX. Many factors, such as irrational drug use and heredity, are associated with drug resistance. Considering the effect of drug transporters on drugs, many studies have compared the expression of drug transporters in drug-resistant and drug-sensitive patients, and abnormal transporter expression and transport activity have been found in patients with MTX resistance. Thus, drug transporters are involved in drug resistance. This article reviews the effects of transporters on the efficacy of MTX in the treatment of RA.
Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) is a major cause of mortality in neonates and can cause long-term neurological sequelae. Excessive autophagy caused by HI may cause neuronal death. Dexmedetomidine was reported neuroprotective against HIBI. Therefore, in the present study, the autophagy-related mechanisms underlying the protective effects of dexmedetomidine against cerebral HI in neonatal rats were investigated.

In the present study, the expression of autophagy-related proteins microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) B-II and Beclin1, neuronal and microglia autophagy levels, the myelin basic protein (MBP) expression, long-term neuronal density ratio, and long-term behavioral prognosis in HIBI model were investigated by ligating the left common carotid artery in neonatal rats, followed by 2-h hypoxia.

In addition, dexmedetomidine inhibited neuronal density decrease and axon demyelination after HI-induced overactivated autophagy. Lastly, dexmedetomidine improved the long-term neurological prognosis and was reversed by the autophagy agonist rapamycin.

Although leishmaniasis have been previously reported in this region, there is a lack of information on the etiological agent and possible vectors. The main objectives of this study were; i) to investigate the sand fly fauna, ii) to reveal the natural Leishmania spp. infection in wild caught sand flies using molecular tools, and iii) to determine the annual seasonal dynamics of the sand flies in Muğla region. Totally, 2093 specimens belonging to 15 species [12 Phlebotomus, three Sergentomyia; 51 unidentified] were collected during the one-year (June 2016- June 2017) period. Of the collected sand flies, 1928 (92.12%) were caught by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps, while 165 (7.88%) of them were caught by sticky traps. Phlebotomus major sensu lato (s.l.), the potential vector of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and canine leishmaniasis (CanL) in the Mediterranean and Aegean region, was detected inin Muğla province was reported for the first time. The presence of vector species in the study area, appropriate temperature and humidity conditions, long sand fly activity season, and presence of Leishmania parasite suggests that there is a serious risk in the transmission of leishmaniasis in Muğla.
