It is an important risk factor of secondary upper urinary tract damage. A complete clinical evaluation is necessary and requires life-long extensive medical attention including invasive procedures that affect patients' quality of life. Potential non-invasive biomarkers would be desirable, especially in the pediatric population. The aim of this review was to analyze two decades of data regarding potential non-invasive biomarkers in the assessment and follow-up of children with NB. This paper summarizes and appraises the knowledge about both biochemical and imaging-based markers in 3 aspects markers of urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder and renal function, and this paper looks at their prospective application in everyday clinical care.Anisakid nematode larvae (NL) in fish products comprise a risk to human health and, if visible, lead to the rejection of these products by consumers. Therefore, great efforts are being made for the identification of these anisakid larvae to estimate the potential consumer health risk as well as to develop effective detection methods in order to prevent the introduction of heavily infected fish products into the market. The tasks of national reference laboratories include the improvement of detection methods and to promote their further development. As a prerequisite for improved detection, it is important to understand the structural properties of anisakid NL and compounds produced during host-parasite interactions. This review provides an overview of the intrinsic properties of anisakid NL and reports the latest detection methods in published literature. First, in order to define the potentially interesting intrinsic properties of anisakid nematodes for their detection, anatomy and compounds involved in host-parasite interactions are summarised. These can be used for various detection approaches, such as in the medical field or for allergen detection in fish products. In addition, fluorescence characteristics and their use as both established and promising candidates for detection methods, especially in the field of optical sensing technologies, are presented. Finally, different detection and identification methods applied by the fish processing industries and by control laboratories are listed. The review intends to highlight trends and provide suggestions for the development of improved detection and identification methods of anisakid NL in fish products.Bacterial spores are a major challenge in industrial decontamination processes owing to their extreme resistance. High-pressure (HP) of 150 MPa at 37 °C can trigger the germination of spores, making them lose their extreme resistance. Once their resistance is lost, germinated spores can easily be inactivated by a mild decontamination step. The implementation of this gentle germination-inactivation strategy is hindered by the presence of a subpopulation of so-called high-pressure superdormant (HPSD) spores, which resist germination or germinate only very slowly in response to HP. It is essential to understand the properties of HPSD spores and the underlying causes of superdormancy to tackle superdormant spores and further develop germination-inactivation strategies involving HP. This study investigated factors influencing the prevalence of HPSD spores and successfully isolated them by combining buoyant density centrifugation and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, which allowed further characterisation of HPS the germination capacity was lower than that of the initial population. The fact that the majority of spores lost superdormancy when exposed a second time to the same trigger makes it unlikely that there is one factor that determines whether a spore germinates with a certain HP treatment or not. Instead, it seems possible that there are other reversible or cumulative causes. This study investigated the factors influencing spore HP superdormancy to improve the understanding of HPSD spores with regard to their stability, germination capacity, and potential underlying causes of spore HP superdormancy. This knowledge will contribute to the development of HP-based germination-inactivation strategies for gentle but effective spore control. The current work aimed to investigate the utilization of gelled emulsion (GE) systems stabilized either with cold or hot gelation consisted of peanut and linseed oils as fat replacers in fermented beef sausages. The reformulation provided a healthier lipid profile, that led to decreasing total lipid content, cholesterol, and SFAs (from 46.6% to 23.5%) meanwhile increasing both MUFAs (from 47.3% to 51.0%) and PUFAs (from 4.7% to 25.4%) as well as improving nutritional ratios (ω-6/ω-3, PUFA/SFA, IA, and IT). Cold-set GE caused less significant changes in instrumental color and protected PUFAs compared with hot-set GE, whereas hot-set GE provided advantages over cold-set GE in terms of microstructure, purge loss, and sensory scores. Replacement of beef fat fully by a hot-set GE system instead of using a fat-GE mixture was effective in reducing oxidation. The results demonstrated that utilization of different GE systems can be an effective strategy to contribute to the development of lipid-modified fermented meat products. The objective of this work was to investigate the changes in color, metmyoglobin reducing activity (MRA), and lipid oxidation (TBARS) and their relationships in beef patties treated by dielectric barrier discharge cold plasma (DBD-CP) at different voltages and frequencies during storage at 4 °C. DBD-CP treatment, including treatment voltages and frequencies, caused the decrease of a⁎ value and MRA (P less then 0.05), promoted the accumulation of metmyoglobin (P less then 0.05), and significantly increased TBARS values (P less then 0.05). It was the first time revealed that the effect of treatment voltage on the quality of beef patty was greater than that of frequency. In addition, there were significant and strong positive correlations between a⁎ value and MRA and negative correlations between a⁎ value, metmyoglobin (MMb)% and TBARS. Taken together, Data demonstrated that DBD-CP treatment can significantly affect meat redness, Mb contents, MRA, and lipid oxidation in ground beef during storage, and accelerate discoloration and lipid oxidation of meat.
While certain clinical factors suggest a diagnosis of dissociative seizures (DS), otherwise known as functional or psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), ictal video-electroencephalography monitoring (VEM) is the gold standard for diagnosis. Diagnostic delays were associated with worse quality of life and more seizures, even after treatment. To understand why diagnoses were delayed, we evaluated which factors were associated with delay to VEM.

Using data from 341 consecutive patients with VEM-documented dissociative seizures, we used multivariate log-normal regression with recursive feature elimination (RFE) and multiple imputation of some missing data to evaluate which of 76 clinical factors were associated with time from first dissociative seizure to VEM.

The mean delay to VEM was 8.4 years (median 3 years, IQR 1-10 years). In the RFE multivariate model, the factors associated with longer delay to VEM included more past antiseizure medications (0.19 log-years/medication, standard error (SE) 0.05), sy center.
Our purpose was to better understand the pathogenesis of seizures associated with angiocentric glioma. Angiocentric glioma is an indolent and rare low-grade glioma. WZB117 Its typical clinical presentation is with epileptic seizures. The pathogenesis of tumor-associated seizures is poorly understood. Among the possible pathomechanisms, the increased neurotoxic concentrations of the glutamate has been proposed. Glutamate transporters, pyruvate carboxylase and glutamine synthetase are involved in maintaining the physiological concentration of glutamate in the inter synaptic spaces.

We evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of EAAT2 (the most important glutamate transporter), pyruvate carboxylase and glutamine synthetase in 17 angiocentric gliomas.

EAAT2 was never expressed (0%) in the neoplastic cells in none of the cases studied. Pyruvate carboxylase was expressed in the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells in 16/17 cases (94 %). Glutamine synthetase was expressed in the cytoplasm of the neoplastic cells in 15/17 cases (88 %).

The net result of this enzymatic expression, in particular considering the loss of EAAT2, could be an increased glutamate concentration in the synaptic clef, which might increase local network excitability initially involving intratumoral neurons. The observation that the angiocentric glioma-associated epilepsy might be at least in part related to EAAT2 deficiency opens up interesting therapeutic perspectives.

Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is a disabling condition in which one hand behaves in a way that the person finds "alien". This feeling of alienation is related to the occurrence of movements of the respective hand performed without or against conscious intention. Most information on AHS stems from single case observations in patients with frontal, callosal, or parietal brain damage.

Retrospective analysis of distinctive clinical features of three out of 18 epilepsy patients who developed AHS with antagonistic movements of the left hand after corpus callosotomy (CC) (one anterior, two complete) for the control of epileptic seizures, particularly epileptic drop attacks (EDA).

Remarkably, these three patients, two men and one woman, displayed atypical language dominance with a bilateral, left more than right hemisphere language representation in intracarotidal amobarbital testing before surgery. The overall additional distinctive feature of the target patients was genuine left-handedness, with writing retrained to right-handedness in two patients. After surgery the left hands became alien. The problem was permanent, despite strategies for compensation.

From this observation we suggest that under the conditions of dissociation of language and motor dominance, loss of both intentional control of contralateral action and physiological inhibition of antagonistic movements lead to post-callosotomy alien-hand-like motor phenomena. The dissociation pattern posing this risk seems rare but needs to be considered when evaluating candidates for callosotomy.
