Because the diet of many herbivorous insects is restricted to closely related taxa with similar chemistry, intercropping with diverse plant communities may reduce both pest populations and reliance on chemical pesticides in agroecosystems. We tested whether the effectiveness of intercropping against herbivorous insects depends on the phylogenetic relatedness of neighboring crops, using butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata) as a focal crop species in a series of different intercropping combinations. We found that increased phylogenetic divergence of neighboring plants could reduce abundance of herbivorous insects, but the effect was only detectable mid-season. In addition, we tested two hypothesized mechanisms for a negative association between phylogenetic distance of neighboring plants and reduced herbivore populations one, we tested using Y-tube olfactometer and choice cage trials whether diverse volatile cues impede host-plant location by the dominant pest of butternut squash in our experiment, striped cucumber beetle Acalymma vittatum. Two, we recorded predator and parasitoid abundance relative to crop phylodiversity to test whether diverse crops support larger natural-enemy populations that can better control pest species. Our results, however, did not support either hypothesis. Striped cucumber beetles preferentially oriented toward non-host-plant volatiles, and predator populations more often decreased with phylodiversity than increased. Thus, the mechanisms driving associations in the field between phylogenetic divergence and herbivore populations remain unclear.Managed and wild pollinators often cohabit in both managed and natural ecosystems. The western honeybee, Apis mellifera, is the most widespread managed pollinator species. Due to its density and behaviour, it can potentially influence the foraging activity of wild pollinators, but the strength and direction of this effect are often context-dependent. Here, we observed plant-pollinator interactions in 51 grasslands, and we measured functional traits of both plants and pollinators. Using a multi-model inference approach, we explored the effects of honeybee abundance, temperature, plant functional diversity, and trait similarity between wild pollinators and the honeybee on the resource overlap between wild pollinators and the honeybee. Resource overlap decreased with increasing honeybee abundance only in plant communities with high functional diversity, suggesting a potential diet shift of wild pollinators in areas with a high variability of flower morphologies. Moreover, resource overlap increased with increasing trait similarity between wild pollinators and the honeybee. In particular, central-place foragers of family Apidae with proboscis length similar to the honeybee exhibited the highest resource overlap. Our results underline the importance of promoting functional diversity of plant communities to support wild pollinators in areas with a high density of honeybee hives. Moreover, greater attention should be paid to areas where pollinators possess functional traits similar to the honeybee, as they are expected to be more prone to potential competition with this species.
This review provides an overview of the patent literature on posteriorly placed intrapedicular bone anchors. Conventional pedicle screws are the gold standard to create a fixation in the vertebra for spinal fusion surgery but may lack fixation strength, especially in osteoporotic bone. The ageing population demands new bone anchors that have an increased fixation strength, that can be placed safely, and, if necessary, can be removed without damaging the surrounding tissue.
The patent search was conducted using a classification search in the Espacenet patent database. Only patents with a Cooperative Patent Classification of A61B17/70 or A61B17/7001 concerning spinal positioners and stabilizers were eligible for inclusion. The search query resulted in the identification of 731 patents. Based on preset inclusion criteria, a total of 56 unique patents on different anchoring methods were included, reviewed and categorized in this study.
Five unique fixation methods were identified; (1) anchors that use threading, (2) anchors that utilize a curved path through the vertebra, (3) anchors that (partly) expand, (4) anchors that use cement and (5) anchors that are designed to initiate bone ingrowth. Of the anchor designs included in this study, eight had a corresponding commercial product, six of which were evaluated in clinical trials.
This review provides insights into worldwide patented intrapedicular bone anchors that aim to increase the fixation strength compared to the conventional pedicle screw. The identified anchoring methods and their working principles can be used for clinical decision-making and as a source of inspiration when designing novel bone anchors.

The study aims to evaluate visual outcome, central corneal thickness, and rebubbling rate in a cohort with oversized DMEK grafts after failed penetrating keratoplasty (PK). The unique feature of the study is a descemetorhexis diameter larger than the full-thickness graft, i.e., peripheral to the PK interface.
A monocentric, retrospective evaluation of all patients with endothelial graft failure after PK treated with an oversized DMEK graft and descemetorhexis outside of the PK interface (i.e., in host tissue) between January 2015 and July 2019 at the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Düsseldorf (Germany) was performed.
Eleven eyes of 10 patients were identified. Mean age was 69years. PI4KIIIbeta-IN-10 On average (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation), 1.7 ± 1.0 previous PKs have been performed per eye in this cohort. The mean time between last PK and DMEK was 10.1 ± 7.3years (range 2 to 23years). In all cases, the graft diameter exceeded the diameter of the previous PK and descemetorhexis was performed in rger DMEK grafts with more endothelial cells can be used without increasing rebubbling rates and may potentially improve long-term graft survival.
DMEK can be successfully used to treat endothelial cell failure after PK, and can provide good postoperative results with regards to visual acuity. This study shows that stripping of Descemet's membrane (DM) peripheral to the PK interface is surgically feasible. Overlapping, larger DMEK grafts with more endothelial cells can be used without increasing rebubbling rates and may potentially improve long-term graft survival.
A new femtosecond laser assisteddeep anterior lamellar keratoplastytechnique (Clear Cornea Femto DALKor CCF DALK) can be performed with less technical challenges compared to conventional procedures. This paper reports on a preliminary case series to evaluate the technique.
First, through a clear cornea approach,Descemet's membrane (DM) is completely separated from posterior stroma by injection of balanced salt solution/viscoelastic substance through a special cannula inserted into the deep stroma and positioned right above the DM without perforating. The injection creates a liquid chamber that detaches the DM while preserving a reasonably transparent corneal stroma. Afterwards, a complete posterior/anterior trephination of the stroma, from the liquid chamber to the epithelium, is done using a femtosecond laser system under optical coherence tomography control.
This technique was successfully performed in a preliminary series of 10 eyes/10 patients. All patients had the DM completely bared and kept their own endothelial cell population with minimal cell loss (< 15%) after 6months. Postoperative interface reaction was minimal, and no immune reactions were observed thus far.

Behavioral interventions have been used with breast cancer survivors (BCS) in cancer pain management and post-treatment quality of life (QOL) studies. We studied the effects of an anti-inflammatory dietary intervention on QOL in BCS.
One hundred fifty-three overweight and obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 25kg/m
), early stage (0-III), English-speaking BCS who had completed all cancer treatment 2 or more months prior to enrollment were recruited into a two-arm randomized controlled trial with a 2 (group) by 3 (time) repeated measures design. Intervention components included six monthly food-preparation workshops and twelve motivational interviewing telephone calls. Endpoints included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) and Breast Cancer (FACT-B), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Repeated measures analysis using PROC MIXED in SAS version 9.4 was used.
On repeated measures analysis (intent to treat), there were no dehavioral interventions.Fibroblast growth factor 5 (FGF5), which is a well-established causative factor for blood pressure, has been identified as a susceptibility gene for preeclampsia (PE) in European and Central Asian women. Here, we examined whether polymorphism rs16998073 in FGF5 confer a significant risk to PE in Chinese Han population by case-control association analysis. FGF5 rs16998073 was genotyped by Sanger sequencing in women with preeclampsia (n = 187) and healthy controls (n = 229) of Han Chinese. We found the frequency of rs16998073T allele was significantly higher in PE patients than that in controls. Next, we utilized dual-luciferase reporter assays and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) reactions to investigate whether rs16998073 different alleles could affect the transcriptional activity of FGF5. The dual luciferase reporter assay showed that T allele increased the transcriptional efficiency by 1.5-fold compared with the G allele. Similarly, EMSA revealed that the T allele had a strong transcription factor binding strength compared with the G allele. We then examined the mRNA and protein expression levels of FGF5 in placental tissues by real-time PCR and Western blot assays. We found FGF5 were significantly upregulated in placental tissues from PE patients or PE mouse model than their corresponding controls. In addition, in vitro cell experiments confirmed that FGF5 could promote cell apoptosis of HTR8/SVneo and inhibit cell invasion. Taken together, our data provide evidence implicating rs16998073 of FGF5 as a functional genetic risk variant for PE disease and FGF5 might participate in development of PE disease.

Direct dorsal approaches have been shown to be superior, particularly in the case of relevant posteromedial and/or posterolateral fracture involvement. The step-by-step approach extension via specific osteotomies of ligamentous attachments also enables aneeds-dependent and fracture-dependent complete joint visualization and reduction control.
