The publication of J. J. Wirth's layman's handbook to healthier cattle farming practices in 1842 met with such unexpected demand even beyond the Canton of Grisons, that a second revised and updated edition was published by one of his successors in the charge of -cantonal veterinary officer, J. L. Wallraff, twenty years later. Through the analysis of these two mid-nineteenth century editions, one can observe how farming and herding practices changed in the Grisons, as concerns the developments in veterinary practices by both -professionals and laypersons in the treatment and prevention of injury, illness and disease in livestock. A comparison of the two editions demonstrates what -remarkable advancements in veterinary medicine were made in the mountainous Canton of Grisons in the second half of the 19th century, especially concerning epidemic controls within a short twenty-year span.

Intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) enables detailed plaque characterisation in vivo, but visual assessment is time-consuming and subjective.
This study aimed to develop and validate an automatic framework for IVOCT plaque characterisation using artificial intelligence (AI).
IVOCT pullbacks from five international centres were analysed in a core lab, annotating basic plaque components, inflammatory markers and other structures. A deep convolutional network with encoding-decoding architecture and pseudo-3D input was developed and trained using hybrid loss. The proposed network was integrated into commercial software to be externally validated on additional IVOCT pullbacks from three international core labs, taking the consensus among core labs as reference.
Annotated images from 509 pullbacks (391 patients) were divided into 10,517 and 1,156 cross-sections for the training and testing data sets, respectively. The Dice coefficient of the model was 0.906 for fibrous plaque, 0.848 for calcivalidation. This model might reduce subjectivity in image interpretation and facilitate IVOCT quantification of plaque composition, with potential applications in research and IVOCT-guided PCI.
Quantification of microvascular function requires the measurement of flow and resistance at rest and during hyperemia. Continuous intracoronary thermodilution accurately measures coronary flow during hyperemia.
To study whether continuous coronary thermodilution using lower infusion rates also enables volumetric coronary blood flow measurements (in mL/min) at rest.
In 59 patients (88 arteries), the ratio of distal to proximal coronary pressure (Pd/Pa), as well as absolute blood flow (in mL/min) by continuous thermodilution, were recorded using a pressure/temperature guide wire. Saline was infused at rates of 10 and 20 mL/min. In 27 arteries, Doppler average peak velocity (APV) was measured simultaneously. Pd/Pa, APV, thermodilution-derived coronary flow reserve (CFRthermo) and coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR) were assessed. In 10 arteries, simultaneous recordings were obtained at saline infusion rates of 6, 8, 10 and 20 mL/min.
Compared to baseline, saline infusion at 10 mL/min did not change Pd/Pa (0.95±0.05 versus 0.94±0.05, p=0.49) nor APV (22±8 versus 23±8 cm/s, p=0.60); conversely, an infusion rate of 20 mL/min induced a decrease in Pd/Pa and an increase in APV. Stable thermodilution tracings were obtained during saline infusion at 8 and 10 mL/min, but not at 6 mL/min. Mean values of CFRthermo and CFVR were similar (2.78±0.91 versus 2.76±1.06, p=0.935) and their individual values correlated closely (r=0.89, 95%CI 0.78 - 0.95, p<0.001).

The present study assessed the efficacy of such LLINs against a multiple-resistant population of the major malaria vector, Anopheles coluzzii, in the city of Yaoundé via a cone bioassay and release-recapture experimental hut trial. Susceptibility of field mosquitoes in Yaoundé to pyrethroids, DDT, carbamates and organophosphate insecticides was investigated using World Health Organization (WHO) bioassay tube tests. Mechanisms of insecticide resistance were characterised molecularly. Efficacy of unwashed PermaNet® 2.0 was evaluated against untreated control nets using a resistant colonised strain of An. coluzzii. Mortality, exophily and blood feeding inhibition were estimated. Field collected An. coluzzii displayed high resistance with mortality rates of 3.5% for propoxur (0.1%), 4.16% for DDT (4%), 26.9% for permethrin (0.75%), 50.8% for deltamethrin (0.05%), and 80% for bendiocarb (0.1%). High frequency of the 1014F west-Africa kdr allele was recorded in addition to the overexpression of several detoxification genes, such as Cyp6P3, Cyp6M2, Cyp9K1, Cyp6P4 Cyp6Z1 and GSTe2. A low mortality rate (23.2%) and high blood feeding inhibition rate (65%) were observed when resistant An. coluzzii were exposed to unwashed PermaNet® 2.0 net compared to control untreated net (p less then 0.001). Furthermore, low personal protection (52.4%) was observed with the resistant strain, indicating reduction of efficacy. The study highlights the loss of efficacy of pyrethroid-only nets against mosquitoes exhibiting high insecticide resistance and suggests a switch to new generation bed nets to improve control of malaria vector populations in Yaoundé.The objective of this experimental study was to assess the insecticidal efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®) against bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) on dogs. For each challenge, 20 bedbugs were placed in two chambers positioned in contact to the dog's skin for 15 min, after which live fed parasites were counted and incubated for survival evaluations. On Day 0, 7 dogs assigned to the treated group were administered afoxolaner orally at the registered dose. All 14 dogs were challenged on Days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28, and the collected live fed C. lectularius incubated for 72 h (Day 1), and 72 h and 96 h (Days 7, 14, 21 and 28) for survival evaluation. The percent feeding in the control group ranged from 95% to 98.6% and the percent of live fed bedbugs at 96 h ranged from 99.3% to 100% in the control group, demonstrating the viability of the strain and their capacity to feed on dogs. Significantly fewer live fed bedbugs were counted in the treated group, compared to the control group, at all time-points. The reduction of live fed C. lectularius in the afoxolaner group was 41.4% at 72 h after the Day 1 challenge, and 77.2%, 82.7%, 85.0% and 63.5% at 96 h after the Days 7, 14, 21 and 28 challenges, respectively. It is hypothesized that monthly treatment of dogs with afoxolaner could help in preventing a bed bug population from installing in a household if bedbugs bite dogs in the presence of humans.A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped and aerobic bacterial strain, named Ery12T, was isolated from the overlying water of the Lau Basin in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Strain Ery12T showed high 16S rRNA gene sequences similarity to Tsuneonella flava MS1-4T (99.9 %), T. mangrovi MCCC 1K03311T (98.1 %), Altererythrobacter ishigakiensis NBRC 107699T (97.3 %) and exhibited ≤97.0 % sequence similarity with other type strains of species with validly published names. Growth was observed in media with 0-10.0 % NaCl (optimum 0-1.0 %, w/v), pH 5.0-9.5 (optimum 6.0-7.0) and 10-42 °C (optimum 30-37 °C). The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 10 (Q-10). The major cellular fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18 1 ω7c and/or C18 1 ω6c). The major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidyglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, three unidentified glycolipids, one unidentified aminoglycolipid and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 60.8 %. The ANI and in silico DDH values between strain Ery12T and the type strains of its closely related species were 71.0- 91.8 % and 19.5- 44.6 %, respectively. According to the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic data, strain Ery12T represents a novel species of the genus Tsuneonella, for which the name Tsuneonella suprasediminis is proposed. The type strain is Ery12T (=CGMCC 1.16500 T=MCCC 1A04421T=KCTC 62388T). We further propose to reclassify Altererythrobacter rhizovicinus and Altererythrobacter spongiae as Pelagerythrobacter rhizovicinus comb. nov. and Altericroceibacterium spongiae comb. nov., respectively.
