The chemical ecology of bacteria on the phylloplane environment is still little explored. The harsh environmental conditions found on leaf surface require high metabolic performances of the bacteria in order to survive. That is interesting both for scientific fields of prospecting natural molecules and for the ecological studies. Important queries about the bacterial lifestyle on leaf surface remain not fully comprehended. Does the hostility of the environment increase the populations' cellular altruism by the production of molecules, which can benefit the whole community? Or does the reverse occur and the production of molecules related to competition between species is increased? Does the phylogenetic distance between the bacterial populations influence the chemical profile during social interactions? Do phylogenetically related bacteria tend to cooperate more than the distant ones? The phylloplane contains high levels of yet uncultivated microorganisms, and understanding the molecular basis of the social networks on this habitat is crucial to gain new insights on the ecology of the mysterious community members due to interspecies molecular dependence. Here, we review and discuss what is known about bacterial social interactions and their chemical lifestyle on leaf surface.PURPOSE Little is known about the role of the superior ovarian nerve (SON) in follicular development during the estrus cycle. The aim of the present study was to analyze the role of neural signals arriving through the SON at the ovaries in the regulation of follicular development and ovarian steroid secretion in diestrus 1 of cyclic rats. METHODS Cyclic rats were subjected to left, right, or bilateral SON sectioning or to unilateral or bilateral laparotomy at diestrus 1 at 1100 h. Animals were sacrificed 24 h after surgery. RESULTS Compared to laparotomized animals, unilateral SON sectioning decreased the number of preovulatory follicles, while bilateral SON sectioning resulted in a decreased number of atretic preantral follicles. An important observation was the presence of invaginations in the follicular wall of large antral and preovulatory follicles in animals with denervation. Furthermore, left SON sectioning increased progesterone levels but decreased testosterone levels, which are effects that were not observed in animals that were subjected to right denervation. CONCLUSIONS At 1100 h of diestrus 1, the SON was found to stimulate follicle development, possibly via neural signals, such as noradrenaline and/or vasoactive intestinal peptide, and this stimulation induced the formation of follicle-stimulating hormone receptors. The role of the SON in the regulation of ovarian steroid secretion is asymmetric the left SON inhibits the regulation of progesterone and stimulates testosterone secretion, and the right nerve does not participate in these processes.PURPOSE To investigate the clinical efficacy of a "Universal Warming" protocol, based on subsequent steps with 1 M and 0.5 M concentration of extracellular cryoprotectant (ECCP), on shipped oocytes. Oocytes are vitrified using different brands of ready-to-use kits which recommend that the use of their own warming kit and combining different vitrification/warming kits may have legal consequences for assisted reproductive (AR) centers, until this practice has been validated with clinical studies. METHODS Retrospective multi-center transnational observational study. Number of oocytes warmed 1.898. Vitrification performed with vitrification kit (Kitazato, Japan); warming carried out randomly with two different kits Kitazato warming kit and Vit Kit®-Thaw (FujiFilm Irvine, USA). CL-14377 molecular weight Warmed oocytes were assigned to 2 groups KK (Kitazato/Kitazato) 939, and KI (Kitazato/Irvine) 959. Primary endpoint survival rate. Secondary endpoints fertilization rate; blastulation rate; implantation rate; live birth rate. link2 RESULTS Survival was comparable between the groups 84.6% (795/939) in group KK vs 82.1% (787/959) in group KI. Fertilization rate was lower (P = 0.027) in group KK (75.7%-602/795) than in group KI (80.4%-633/787). Blastulation and implantation and live birth rates were all statistically comparable between the study groups blastulation rate was 58.5% (352/602) vs 57.8% (366/633); implantation rate was 41.5% (80/193) vs 45.9% (84/183); live birth rate was 52.5% (62/118) in KK and 45.0% (54/120) in KI. CONCLUSION The use of this "Universal Warming" protocol simplifies vitrified oocyte exchange between AR centers in different countries, and overcomes potential regulatory/commercial/availability differences affecting clinical practice. When similar visual stimuli are presented binocularly to both eyes, one perceives a fused single image. However, when the two stimuli are distinct, one does not perceive a single image; instead, one perceives binocular rivalry. That is, one perceives one of the stimulated patterns for a few seconds, then the other for few seconds, and so on - with random transitions between the two percepts. Most theoretical studies focus on rivalry, with few considering the coexistence of fusion and rivalry. Here we develop three distinct computational neuronal network models which capture binocular rivalry with realistic stochastic properties, fusion, and the hysteretic transition between. Each is a conductance-based point neuron model, which is multi-layer with two ocular dominance columns (L & R) and with an idealized "ring" architecture where the orientation preference of each neuron labels its location on a ring. In each model, the primary mechanism initiating binocular rivalry is cross-column inhibition, with firing rate adaptation governing the temporal properties of the transitions between percepts. Under stimulation by similar visual patterns, each of three models uses its own mechanism to overcome cross-column inhibition, and thus to prevent rivalry and allow the fusion of similar images The first model uses cross-column feedforward inhibition from the opposite eye to "shut off" the cross-column feedback inhibition; the second model "turns on" a second layer of monocular neurons as a parallel pathway to the binocular neurons, rivaling out of phase with the first layer, and together these two pathways represent fusion; and the third model uses cross-column excitation to overcome the cross-column inhibition and enable fusion. Thus, each of the idealized ring models depends upon a different mechanism for fusion that might emerge as an underlying mechanism present in real visual cortex.Extracellular pH can indicate the variation in organelle function and cell state. It is important to measure extracellular pH (pHe) with a controllable distance. In this work, a potentiometric SECM dual-microelectrode was developed to monitor the pHe of MCF-7 cells under electrical stimulation. The distance between the dual-microelectrode and the cells was determined first with a gold microelectrode by recording the approaching curve, and the pH was determined using an open-circuit potential (OCP) technique with a polyaniline-modified Pt microelectrode. The pH microelectrode showed a response slope of 53.0 ± 0.4 mV/pH and good reversibility from pH 4 to pH 8, fast response within 10 s, and a potential drift of 1.13% for 3 h, and thus was employed to monitor the pHe of stimulated cells. The value of pHe decreased with the decrease in the distance to cells, likely due to the release of H+. With an increase in the stimulation potential or time, the pHe value decreased, as the cell membrane became more permeable, which was verified by fluorescence staining of calcein-AM/PI (propidium iodide). Based on these results, this method can be widely applied for determining the species released by biosystems at a controllable position.Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) becomes a critical tool in the fields of ecology and biogeochemistry to trace basal carbon sources such as amino acids (AAs) and fatty acids (FAs) in natural environments. However, in many studies, either AAs or FAs have been analyzed due to restricted sample amounts. The aim of this study is to report a single-sample preparation method by identifying AAs using lipid-free residues derived from a typical FA analytic procedure. The capability of the lipid-free residues was evaluated by determining AA quantities and carbon isotopic compositions (δ13C) across diverse sample matrices, including soil, suspended particulate organic matter (SPM), fish tissue, and cultured cyanobacteria (N = 3). Our result showed that the use of lipid-free residues after a typical lipid extraction procedure in most samples did not significantly reduce the AA quantities, relative to the conventional AA method (done by using whole samples), except in case of samples of soil. Moreover, δ13C compositions of the most AAs (from essential to nonessential AAs) in all samples were not significantly different, with an average isotope difference of less then  2.1‰ between the two methods. Overall results indicate that the residual parts after extracting lipid fraction are useful for reliable AA quantification and individual isotopic information. Ultimately, one sample preparation for determining FA and AA data enables us to characterize one (or multiple) basal carbon source(s) within rare samples despite their limited abundance. This retrospective study aims to evaluate outcomes, clinical and radiological results in patients affected by anterior ankle impingement, in a context of early osteoarthritis, and treated with mini-open anterior ankle arthrolysis, in the perspective to delay or avoid other demolitive surgical options, such as total ankle replacement and joint fusion. METHODS In total, 49 patients (50 feet, mean age 45 years) undergone mini-open anterior ankle arthrolysis for anterior impingement, fulfilled inclusion criteria and gave their consent and have been enlisted in the study. Patients were retrospectively reviewed with AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score and SF-36 score at a minimum follow-up of 36 months. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS A marked improvement was noticed in terms of preoperative clinical score (mean AOFAS score 47.32 ± 17.89) compared to follow-up clinical score (mean AOFAS score 70.66 ± 16.62; p  less then  0.005), and all of 8 SF-36 domains showed statistically improved (p  less then  0.05) from preoperative to follow-up. Statistical significance has been shown. CONCLUSIONS It is possible to consider the mini-open anterior arthrolysis, thanks to the reduction of the painful symptomatology, a valid tool for procrastinating more invasive interventions such as arthrodesis or prosthetic replacement in patients with grade 1 or 2 of ankle osteoarthritis.PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the effect of vitamin D supplementation on ovulation rate in overweight subfertile women with PCOS undergoing ovulation induction. link3 METHODS This was a single center, parallel-groups, double-blind, and placebo-controlled randomized trial involving 186 eligible women undergoing induction of ovulation with clomiphene citrate (Clomid®, Aventis) 50 mg tablet twice daily starting from the third day of menstrual cycle and for 5 days combined with either oral Vitamin D (ossofortin®, EVA PHARMA) 10,000 IU twice weekly and calcium (calciprex®, Marcyrl Pharmaceutical Industries) 1250 mg twice daily or to receive a placebo with calcium for three successive induction cycles. The vitamin D or placebo supplementation started 1 month before induction cycles (total four cycles). Cycles were monitored with ultrasound follicle tracking and mid-luteal serum progesterone measurement. The primary outcome was the ovulation rate after three induction cycles. RESULTS The study was performed during the period between January 2018 and September 2018, Eighty six (92.
