In total, 431 exercisers (female = 216; male = 215) aged 18 and 64 years, engaged in fitness activities such as group fitness classes and resistance training, were included in the analysis. Serial mediation procedures were employed to examine the direct, indirect, and total indirect effects among variables. The predictor variable and all mediators displayed a positive and significant association with future six-month adherence. Professionals working in the fitness centre context can identify possible dropouts based on their past behaviour and intentions to be physically active in the future.The Ozone Water-Land Environmental Transition Study, 2018 (OWLETS-2) measured total non-methane hydrocarbons (TNMHC) and EPA PAMS Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) on an island site in the northern Chesapeake Bay 2.1 and 3.4 times greater in concentration, respectively, than simultaneous measurements at a land site just 13 km away across the land-water interface. Many PAMS VOCs had larger concentrations at the island site despite lower NEI emissions over the water, but most of the difference comprised species generally consistent with gasoline vapor or exhaust. Sharp chemical differences were observed between the island and mainland and the immediate air ~300 m above the water surface observed by airplane. Ozone formation potential over land was driven by propene and isoprene but toluene and hexane were dominant over the water with little isoprene observed. VOC concentrations over the water were noted to increase diurnally with an inverse pattern to land resulting in increasing NOx sensitivity over the water. Total reactive nitrogen was lower over the water than the nearby land site, but reservoir compounds (NOz) were greater. Ozone production rates were generally slow (~5 ppb hr-1) both at the surface and aloft over the water, even during periods of high ozone (>70 ppbv) at the water surface. However, specific events showed rapid ozone production >40 ppb hr-1 at the water's surface during situations with high VOCs and sufficient NOx. Yet, within the framework of exercises repeated at close time interval, the consequences of CM ingestion on mechanical performance are controversial and the bioenergetics side remains undocumented. The aim of this double-blind placebo-controlled study was to evaluate in vivo the effect of short-term (7 doses in 48 h) oral administration of CM upon gastrocnemius muscle function and bioenergetics using non-invasive multimodal NMR techniques in healthy rats. The experimental protocol consisted of two 6-min bouts of fatiguing exercise spaced by an 8-min recovery period. CM treatment did not affect the basal bioenergetics status and increased the half-fatigue time during the first exercise bout. With exercise repetition, it prevented PCr cost alteration and decreased both the glycolytic ATP production and the contractile ATP cost in working muscle, but these changes were not associated to any improvement in mechanical performance. In addition, CM did not influence the replenishment of high-energy phosphorylated compounds during the post-exercise recovery periods. Therefore, short-term CM administration enhances muscle bioenergetics throughout fatiguing bouts of exercise repeated at close time interval but this enhancement does not benefit to mechanical performance.

Based on the morphological difference, we developed a Live, Apoptotic, and Necrotic Cell Explorer (LANCE) to categorize cell death status in a label-free manner, by incorporating machine learning and image processing. The LANCE workflow includes cropping individual cells from microscopic images having hundreds of cells, formation of an image database of around 5000 events, training and validation of the convolutional neural network models using multiple cell lines, and treatment conditions. With LANCE, we precisely categorized live, apoptotic, and necrotic cells with a high accuracy of 96.3 ± 0.5%. More importantly, the nondestructive label-free LANCE method allows for tracking time dynamics of the cell death process, which enhances the understanding of subtle cell death regulation at the molecular level. Hence, LANCE is a fast, low-cost, and nondestructive label-free method to distinguish cell status, which can be applied to cell death studies as well as many other biomedical applications.Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by inflammation and a failure of multimodal signal integration in the central nervous system (CNS). Central nervous system reorganization might account for sensory deficits, pain, and motor symptoms in CRPS, but it is not clear how motor control is affected by CNS mechanisms. The present study characterized the motor performance and related cortical activity of 16 CRPS patients and 16 control participants during the planning of visually guided unimanual grips, in patients with either the unaffected left or the affected right hand, and investigated resting-state sensorimotor coupling in MRI. Patients started isometric movements further in advance of the "go" cue and earlier than control participants. Even when accounting for this different timing, results showed side-independent overactivation in planning-related sensorimotor regions in CRPS during manual grips and increased functional coupling between those regions at rest. Fear of movement or individual pain scores contributed only marginally to the observed effects.
