In biomechanics, estimating the relative position between two body segments using inertial and magnetic measurement units (IMMUs) is important in that it enables the capture of human motion in unconstrained environments. The relative position can be estimated using the segment orientation and segment-to-joint center (S2J) vectors where the S2J vectors are predetermined as constants under the assumption of rigid body segments. However, human body segments are not rigid bodies because they are easily affected by soft tissue artifacts (STAs). Therefore, the use of the constant S2J vectors is one of the most critical factors for the inaccurate estimation of relative position. To deal with this issue, this paper proposes a method of determining time-varying S2J vectors to reflect the deformation of the S2J vectors and thus to increase the estimation accuracy, in IMMU-based relative position estimation. For the proposed method, first, reference S2J vectors for learning needed to be collected. A regression method derived a function outputting S2J vectors based on specific physical quantities that were highly correlated with the deformation of S2J vectors. Subsequently, time-varying S2J vectors were determined from the derived function. The validation results showed that, in terms of the averaged root mean squared errors of four tests performed by three subjects, the proposed method (15.08 mm) provided a higher estimation accuracy than the conventional method using constant vectors (31.32 mm). This indicates the proposed method may effectively compensate for the effects of STAs and ultimately estimate more accurate relative positions. By providing STA-compensated relative positions between segments, the proposed method applied in a wearable motion tracking system can be useful in rehabilitation or sports sciences.Machine learning with static-analysis features extracted from malware files has been adopted to detect malware variants, which is desirable for resource-constrained edge computing and Internet-of-Things devices with sensors; however, this learned model suffers from a misclassification problem because some malicious files have almost the same static-analysis features as benign ones. In this paper, we present a new detection method for edge computing that can utilize existing machine learning models to classify a suspicious file into either benign, malicious, or unpredictable categories while existing models make only a binary decision of either benign or malicious. The new method can utilize any existing deep learning models developed for malware detection after appending a simple sigmoid function to the models. When interpreting the sigmoid value during the testing phase, the new method determines if the model is confident about its prediction; therefore, the new method can take only the prediction of high accuracy, which reduces incorrect predictions on ambiguous static-analysis features. Through experiments on real malware datasets, we confirm that the new scheme significantly enhances the accuracy, precision, and recall of existing deep learning models. For example, the accuracy is enhanced from 0.96 to 0.99, while some files are classified as unpredictable that can be entrusted to the cloud for further dynamic or human analysis.Magnetic and inductive sensors are the dominant technologies in angular position sensing for automotive applications. This paper introduces a new angular sensor a hybrid concept combining the magnetic Hall and inductive principles. A magnetic Hall transducer provides an accurate angle from 0° to 180°, whereas an inductive transducer provides a coarse angle from 0° to 360°. For this novel concept, a hybrid target with a magnetic and inductive signature is also needed. Using the two principles at the same time enables superior performances, in terms of range, compactness and robustness, that are not possible when used separately. We realized and characterized a prototype. The prototype achieves a 360° range, has a high accuracy and is robust against mechanical misalignments, stray fields and stray metals. The measurement results demonstrate that the two sensing principles are completely independent, thereby opening the doors for hybrid optimum magnetic-inductive designs beyond the usual trade-offs (range vs. resolution, size vs. robustness to misalignment).Considering that the actual operating environment of UAV is complex and easily disturbed by the space environment of urban buildings, the RoutE Planning Algorithm of Resilience Enhancement (REPARE) for UAV 3D route planning based on the A* algorithm and artificial potential fields algorithm is carried out in a targeted manner. First of all, in order to ensure the safety of the UAV design, we focus on the capabilities of the UAV body and build a risk identification, assessment, and modeling method such that the mission control parameters of the UAV can be determined. Then, the three-dimensional route planning algorithm based on the artificial potential fields algorithm is used to ensure the safe operation of the UAV online and in real time. At the same time, by adjusting the discriminant coefficient of potential risks in real time to deal with time-varying random disturbance encountered by the UAV, the resilience of the UAV 3D flight route planning can be improved. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm is verified by the simulation. The simulation results show that the REPARE algorithm can effectively solve the traditional route planning algorithm's insufficiency in anti-disturbance. It is safer than a traditional A* route planning algorithm, and its running time is shorter than that of the traditional artificial potential field route planning algorithm. It solves the problems of local optimization, enhances the UAV's ability to tolerate general uncertain disturbances, and eventually improves resilience of the system.A multiple-actuator fault isolation approach for overactuated electric vehicles (EVs) is designed with a minimal ℓ1-norm solution. As the numbers of driving motors and steering actuators increase beyond the number of controlled variables, an EV becomes an overactuated system, which exhibits actuator redundancy and enables the possibility of fault-tolerant control (FTC). On the other hand, an increase in the number of actuators also increases the possibility of simultaneously occurring multiple faults. To ensure EV reliability while driving, exact and fast fault isolation is required; however, the existing fault isolation methods demand high computational power or complicated procedures because the overactuated systems have many actuators, and the number of simultaneous fault occurrences is increased. The method proposed in this paper exploits the concept of sparsity. The underdetermined linear system is defined from the parity equation, and fault isolation is achieved by obtaining the sparsest nonzero component of the residuals from the minimal ℓ1-norm solution. Therefore, the locations of the faults can be obtained in a sequence, and only a consistently low computational load is required regardless of the isolated number of faults. The experimental results obtained with a scaled-down overactuated EV support the effectiveness of the proposed method, and a quantitative index of the sparsity condition for the target EV is discussed with a CarSim-connected MATLAB/Simulink simulation. This work studies the feasibility of using backscatter-modulated tags to introduce false information into a signal received by a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. A proof-of-concept spoofing device was designed in the 24 GHz ISM band. The spoofing device was based on an amplifier connected between two antennas, and modulation was carried out by switching the amplifier bias. The use of an amplifier allowed us to increase the level of spoofing signal compared with other modulated backscattering methods. The simulated and experimental results show that our method has the ability to generate a pair of false targets at different ranges and velocities depending on the modulation frequency of the chosen tag, since sidebands appear due to this modulation. Countermeasures to detect the spoofing attack based on changes in the slope of the frequency sweep between frames are also proposed. In this work, the dielectric permittivity of four kinds of wood (Fir, Poplar, Oak, and Beech Tree), used in Italian Artworks and structures, was characterized at different humidity levels. Measurements were carried out using three different probes connected to a bench vector network analyzer a standard WR90 X-band waveguide, a WR430 waveguide, and an open-ended coaxial probe. In particular, we investigated the dispersion model for the four wood species, showing how a log-fit model of the open-ended data presents a determination coefficient R2 > 0.990 in the 1-12 GHz frequency range. This result has proven helpful to fill the frequency gap between the measurements obtained at different water contents with the two waveguide probes showing an R2 > 0.93. Furthermore, correlating the log-fit vertical shift with the water content, it was possible to find a calibration curve with a linear characteristic. These experimental results will be helpful for on-site non-invasive water monitoring of wooden artworks or structures. Moreover, the final results show how the open-ended coaxial probe, with a measurement deviation lower than 7% from the waveguide measurements, may be used directly as a non-invasive sensor for on-site measurements.Manikin carrying is a lifesaving sports technique, in which athletes stroke with one arm and carry a manikin of 60 kg with the other arm as they swim. Stabilizing the manikin exerts great demand on the shoulder muscles of the carrying arm; thus, this study aimed to investigate the muscle activation of the carrying shoulder and the possible factors associated with it. This was a cross-sectional study, in which 20 young elite lifesaving athletes were recruited from the Hong Kong Lifesaving Society. The muscle activity of the posterior deltoid (PD), teres major (TM), and middle trapezius (MT) were recorded with wireless surface electromyography (sEMG) during the performance of 25-m manikin carrying in a swimming pool. The 25-m manikin-carrying was divided into and analyzed in 3 phases initial, middle, and end phase. The initial phase was defined as the period from the athlete's first swimming stroke to the end of the third stroke; the middle phase was defined as the period between the initial and the end phase; and the end phase was defined as the period from the last third stroke to the last stroke at the 25-m finishing line. The first web space and grip strength were measured. The speed and number of inhalations were calculated. PD showed muscle activity of 55.73% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) in the initial phase and 40.21% MVIC in middle phase. 2,4-Thiazolidinedione TM showed a muscle activity of 65.26% MVIC in the initial phase and 64.35% MVIC in the middle phase. MT showed 84.54% MVIC in the initial phase and 68.54% MVIC in the middle phase. Young elite athletes showed significant use of PD, TM, and MT during manikin-carrying. The muscle activity levels correlated with the first web space, grip strength, speed, and number of inhalations of the athletes.
