Likewise, the Superoxide dismutase (SOD 1.28 nM/min/mg FW) and Peroxidase (POD 0.48 nM/min/mg FW) activities were also recorded maximum in CuO-NPs elicited cultures than MnO-NPs and control. However, further molecular investigations are needed to fully develop understanding about the metabolic potential of O. bascillicum and scalling up this protocol for bulkup production of bioactive compounds.
To evaluate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the occurrence of facial fractures in a tertiary trauma centre.
All facial fracture patients evaluated by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon during the first stage of the pandemic in spring 2020 were included in the study and compared to the corresponding periods in 2017 and 2018. Differences in age, sex, timespan from accident to diagnosis of facial fracture, injury mechanism, fracture type, treatment method, associated injuries (AIs), and alcohol consumption at the time of injury were analyzed between the forementioned time periods.
The total number of patients (
= 107) during the COVID restriction period did not differ from the previous years (116 and 113 patients in 2017 and 2018, respectively,
=.368). Injury mechanism was less often assault during 2020 compared with previous years (14.0% in 2020 versus 31.8% in 2018 and 30.2% in 2017). Non-intracranial AIs were more common in the COVID period (28% in 2020 versus 14.2% in 2018 and 21.6%). The distribution was statistically significant (
=.041). Alcohol use prior to injury varied between years (
=.023). Alcohol was more often related to the injuries in 2020 compared to the previous years.
COVID restrictions did not affect the overall facial fracture occurrence, but there was a significant decrease in assaults. The proportion of alcohol-related injuries did not decrease despite restrictions.

The main acute and late effects of ionizing radiation on living organisms are the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis and DNA damage. Since the Rac1 molecule is a subunit of the NADPH oxidase enzyme, it is known to participate in the generation of ROS. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of Rac1 molecule in testicular damage induced by low (0.02 Gy), medium (0.1 Gy) and high (5 Gy) dose irradiation.
In this study, Wistar rats (except the control group) were received whole body X-ray irradiation. Testicular tissues were removed 2 hours, 24 hours and 7 days after radiation exposure. Testicular damage was examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining and Johnsen's score. Immunohistochemical staining and G-LISA method were used to determine Rac1 expression and activation. To evaluate the generation of ROS in the testicular tissues, intracellular ROS, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured.
Increases in testicular damage were detected in all radiation exposed groups in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Compared to the control group, Rac1 expression decreased in all irradiated groups, while Rac1 activation increased. In addition, intracellular ROS and MDA levels were increased and SOD activity levels decreased in the irradiated groups compared to the control group.
Our findings suggest that Rac1 has a role in the increase of intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation which led to an increase in radiation- induced testicular damage.

At the same time, behavioral geneticists have demonstrated that many moral stances have genetic bases. We integrated these perspectives by examining how moral condemnation of recreational drug use relates to sexual strategy (i.e., being more vs. less open to sex outside of a committed relationship) in a sample of Finnish twins and siblings (N = 8,118). Twin modeling suggested that genetic factors accounted for 53%, 46%, and 41% of the variance in drug condemnation, sociosexuality, and sexual-disgust sensitivity, respectively. Further, approximately 75% of the phenotypic covariance between drug condemnation and sexual strategy was accounted for by genes, and there was substantial overlap in the genetic effects underlying both drug condemnation and sexual strategy (rg = .41). Results are consistent with the proposal that some moral sentiments are calibrated to promote strategic sexual interests, which arise partially via genetic factors.Collaborative practice (CP) is integral in meeting the Quadruple Aim of healthcare, with effective team-based practice linked to improving all four components. Evidence of the validity of tools measuring collaborative practice competencies is lacking in educational and practice settings. The Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide® (JTOG®), a real-time, 360-degree competency-based assessment tool administered via mobile app, provides formative feedback to learners in educational settings and helps practitioners develop and refine team-based behaviors in clinical settings. This study examines content validity evidence in terms of the linkage of JTOG items with the four Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies, along with two additional domains of leadership and patient-centeredness. Results provide content validity evidence to support use of the JTOG in interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) settings. The Teams and Teamwork competency was linked with every item, which is consistent with JTOG as a measure of teamwork. Aligning with the 2016 IPEC update, the JTOG items are all intercorrelated and together represent coverage across all competency areas. While items were typically linked to multiple competencies, each item only had one primary linkage. Analyses revealed that there is sufficient evidence of content validity relative to the intended IPCP competencies, and the JTOG tool is promising in its role to fill a gap in extant literature to measure collaborative practice behaviors.Neutrophil extracellular traps increase cystic fibrosis (CF) airway inflammation. We hypothesized that macrophage exposure to neutrophil elastase (NE) would trigger the release of macrophage extracellular traps (METs), a novel mechanism to augment NE-induced airway inflammation in CF. To test whether human blood monocyte derived macrophages (hBMDM) from CF and non-CF subjects take up proteolytically active NE resulting in clipping of chromatin binding proteins and the release of METs. Human BMDM from CF and non-CF subjects were treated with FITC-NE to determine NE localization. Intracellular NE activity was determined by DQ-elastin assay. MET DNA release was detected by Pico-green for hBMDM, and visualized by confocal microscopy for hBMDM, and for alveolar macrophages harvested from intratracheal NE-exposed Cftr-null and wild-type littermate mice. Immunofluorescence assays for histone citrullination and western analyses for histone clipping were performed. FITC-NE was localized to cytoplasmic and nuclear domains, and NE retained proteolytic activity in hBMDM. NE (100 to 500 nM) significantly increased extracellular DNA release from hBMDM. NE activated MET release by confocal microscopy in hBMDM, and in alveolar macrophages from Cftr-null and Cftr wild-type mice. NE-triggered MET release was associated with H3 citrullination and partial cleavage of Histone H3 but not H4. Exposure to NE caused release of METs from both CF and non-CF hBMDM in vitro and murine alveolar macrophages in vivo. MET release was associated with NE-activated H3 clipping, a mechanism associated with chromatin decondensation, a prerequisite for METs.This study aimed to identify the prognostic factors for outcomes of surgical mobilisation in patients with posttraumatic limited range of motion (ROM) of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint and determine which procedure actually improves the PIP joint ROM. A total of 71 fingers (57 patients 49 men, 8 women; mean age, 41 years) with posttraumatic limited passive ROM of the PIP joint ( less then 60°) who underwent surgical mobilisation were reviewed. Possible prognostic factors, including age, injury type, injured finger, injury in the adjacent finger, and procedure types, were assessed. We defined the PIP joint ROM improvement as the primary outcome in the linear regression analysis. To evaluate surgical efficacy, we classified the surgical treatment options into four categories (volar release, dorsal release, volar and dorsal release, and joint distraction with an external fixator) and compared their outcomes. The mean postoperative improvement in the PIP joint ROM was 12°. In the linear regression analysis, advanced age (estimate, -0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.76 to -0.06), open injury (estimate, -13.54; 95% CI -27.02 to -0.06), and skin defects (estimate, -23.22; 95% CI -34.83 to -11.61) were associated with worse outcomes; however, the volar approach was associated with favourable outcomes. Surgical mobilisation is strongly recommended when limited ROM of the PIP joint is caused by flexion site contracture. To improve the final outcome of fingers with complex injuries, a tailored treatment strategy is required to avoid dorsal release.Latinx youth, members of an ethnic minority group growing faster than the national growth rate, are at increased risk of experiencing adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) but it remains unclear how ACEs relate to externalizing behaviors, such as substance use and behaviors leading to injury and violence, in this population. Suicide attempts have been associated with both cocaine use disorder (CocUD) and childhood trauma. We investigated how childhood trauma is an independent risk factor for serious and recurrent suicide attempts in CocUD.
298 outpatients (23% women) with CocUD underwent standardized assessments of substance dependence (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-mental disorders, fourth edition, text revised), impulsiveness, resilience, and childhood trauma, using validated tools. Suicide attempts history was categorized as single vs. recurrent or non-serious vs. serious depending on the lifetime number of suicide attempts and the potential or actual lethality of the worst attempt reported, respectively. Bivariate and multinomial regression analyses were used to characterize which childhood trauma patterns were associated with the suicide attempts groups.
