Interannual and local fluctuations in wheat crop yield are mostly explained by abiotic constraints. High-throughput methods were optimized to phenotype wheat plants under controlled water deficit and high temperature, with the aim to identify phenotypic traits conferring adaptative stress responses. Wheat plants of 10 genotypes were grown in a fully automated plant facility under 25/18 °C day/night for 30 d, and then the temperature was increased for 7 d (38/31 °C day/night) while maintaining half of the plants well irrigated and half at 30% field capacity. Thermal and multispectral images and pot weights were registered twice daily. At the end of the experiment, key metabolites and enzyme activities from carbohydrate and antioxidant metabolism were quantified. Regression machine learning models were successfully established to predict plant biomass using image-extracted parameters. Evapotranspiration traits expressed significant genotype-environment interactions (G×E) when acclimatization to stress was continuously monitored. Consequently, transpiration efficiency was essential to maintain the balance between water-saving strategies and biomass production in wheat under water deficit and high temperature. Stress tolerance included changes in carbohydrate metabolism, particularly in the sucrolytic and glycolytic pathways, and in antioxidant metabolism. The observed genetic differences in sensitivity to high temperature and water deficit can be exploited in breeding programmes to improve wheat resilience to climate change.
The Brazilian Air Force (BAF) personnel must be prepared to perform their professional activities under the worst conditions. This preparation goes beyond habits of practicing physical activity, since it is necessary to perform specific physical tasks, referred to as "combat tasks" (CTs). This study aimed to investigate a combination of specific physical tests (SPTs) for predicting physical performance on simulated tasks (STs) that mimicked the performance of CTs.

Thirty infantry cadets from the BAF took part in anthropometric assessments, 11 SPTs, and 3 STs, during 7 testing days. Bivariate Pearson's correlation was used to determine linear relationships between SPT and ST results, and multiple linear regression models were used to identify test batteries that significantly predicted performance on STs. The level of significance was set at 5%. The study was conducted according to the guidelines of the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by the Ethics Committee of the BAF (protocol code 15796819.4.0000.5250, date of approval September 25, 2019).

The greatest predictive power was obtained by the test battery that consisted of sprint-drag-carry, leg tucks, and handgrip strength (R2 = 0.56, P < .01). Conversely, the test battery comprised of push-ups, sit-ups, and 12-minute run (which represents the conventional physical test of the BAF), which presented the lowest predictive power (R2 = 0.14, P < .05).

However, students from underrepresented groups (UR) are less likely to be mentored or have access to mentors, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. We developed and implemented a workshop, to provide the necessary foundation for students to be better prepared for establishing future mentorships throughout graduate and professional school. Faculty well-versed in the area of effective mentorship from multiple universities developed and delivered a 1.5-hour workshop to address the roles of a mentor, especially when it comes to UR students, and how students may effectively work with multiple mentors. This workshop was delivered to a group of students from, the Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Winston-Salem State University, and a pre/post-10-point Likert scale-based survey was administered where 1 represented strongly disagree and 10 was strongly agree. The questions used in this seminar were newly designed by the authors as program evaluations. We analyzed the raw data with nonparametric tests for comparison within paired samples. Participants in the Researching Cardiovascular Events with a Weekly Incretin in Diabetes (REWIND) trial who completed both the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score and Digit Substitution Test (DSST) at baseline (N = 8772) were included. These scores were used to identify participants with baseline substantive cognitive impairment (SCI), defined as a baseline score on either the MoCA or DSST ≥ 1.5 SD below either score's country-specific mean, or SCI-GM, which was based on a composite index of both scores calculated as their geometric mean (GM), and defined as a score that was ≥ 1.5 SD below their country's average GM. Relationships between these measures and incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and either stroke or death were analyzed.

Compared with 7867 (89.7%) unaffected participants, the 905 (10.3%) participants with baseline SCI had a higher incidence of MACE (unadjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.34; 95% CI 1.11, 1.62; P = 0.003), and stroke or death (unadjusted HR 1.60; 95% CI 1.33, 1.91; P < 0.001). Stronger relationships were noted for SCI-GM and MACE (unadjusted HR 1.61; 95% CI 1.28, 2.01; P < 0.001), and stroke or death (unadjusted HR 1.85; 95% CI 1.50, 2.30; P < 0.001). For SCI-GM but not SCI, all these relationships remained significant in models that adjusted for up to 10 SCI risk factors.

The natural history of young adults with prediabetes and its association with cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics in progression to diabetes remain unknown.

We examined the association between CVH metrics and the annual incidence of diabetes in young adults with prediabetes.

This observational cohort study used the JMDC Claims Database. We analyzed 18 908 participants aged 18 to 44 years, with available fasting plasma glucose (FPG) data for 5 consecutive years, and who had prediabetes (FPG 100-125 mg/dL) at the initial health checkup. The ideal CVH metrics were as follows nonsmoking, body mass index (BMI) less than 25 kg/m2, physical activity at goal, optimal dietary habits, blood pressure less than 120/80 mm Hg, and total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL. We analyzed the association between CVH metrics and the annual incidence of diabetes. We also examined the relationship between 1-year changes in CVH metrics and the subsequent risk of diabetes.

The incidence of diabetes was 3.3% at 1 year and 9.5% at 5 years after the initial health checkup. An increasing number of nonideal CVH metrics have been associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Nonideal BMI, smoking, blood pressure, and total cholesterol level were associated with an increased risk of diabetes. This association was observed both in men and women. A one-point increase in the number of nonideal CVH metric components was associated over 1 year with an increased risk of diabetes.

Males are attracted to methyl eugenol, and control is often achieved by the Male Annihilation Technique, where methyl eugenol + insecticide dispensers are deployed to eliminate males, preclude matings, and reduce population growth. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) has also been used to control B. dorsalis. The SIT involves the release of mass-reared, sterilized males to achieve matings with wild females, who then produce inviable eggs. Two key elements of SIT include the overflooding ratio achieved (sterile wild males) and the strain type utilized, namely bisexual or genetically sexed (allowing male-only releases). Here, we describe the effects of these two factors on the mating competitiveness of a males from a genetic sexing strain of B. dorsalis, termed DTWP. Mating success was scored for DTWP versus wild males in field cages at ratios of 12, 11, 21, and 101 both when DTWP females were or were not concurrently released with DTWP males. Close correspondence was found between observed numbers of matings of particular male-female combinations and expected numbers based on the numbers of flies released of each sex and each strain. As a result, the proportion of total matings achieved by the DTWP across the eight treatments showed a corresponding increase with overflooding ratio. At a given ratio, DTWP males had a higher relative mating success when DTWP females were absent rather than present, although the reason for this was unclear.
To quantify the impact of the mode of administration (MOA) on scores of the Vision Impairment in Low Luminance (VILL) questionnaire.

The VILL questionnaire was implemented using different MOAs (paper, interview, electronic), in addition to a demographical survey of adult participants recruited at an outpatient eye clinic, with the initial MOA being either paper or interview. Polytomous Rasch models were used to generate person measure scores for the three subscales of the VILL questionnaire (reading, VILL_R; mobility, VILL_M; and emotional, VILL_E). Measures of agreement among the different MOAs were calculated (self-administered paper/interview, self-administered paper/self-administered electronic, and interview/self-administered electronic). An age-matched analysis was performed to control for the impact of the initial MOA, administration interval, visual acuity, and self-reported hearing difficulties.

We included 309 participants (mean age, 63 ± 14 years; 61% female). Intra-class correlation coefficients were 0.930, 0.919, and 0.799 for paper versus interview assessment; 0.951, 0.959, and 0.916 for paper versus electronic; and 0.967, 0.955, and 0.907 for interview versus electronic assessment (VILL_R, VILL_M, and VILL_E, respectively). Mean differences were 0.35, 0.41, and 1.74 logits; 0.32, 0.18, and 0.68 logits; and 0.08, 0.22, and 0.63 logits, respectively. None of the mentioned factors significantly affected the results (corrected P ≥ 0.11).

The brain is known to change functionally and structurally in response to blindness, but less is known about the effects of restoration of cortical input on brain function. Here, we present a preliminary study to observe alterations in visual and electrical evoked cortical potentials as a function of age in a clinically relevant animal model of retinitis pigmentosa.

We recorded brain potentials elicited by light (visual evoked potentials [VEPs]) or corneal electrical stimulation (electrical evoked response [EER]) in retinal degenerate animal model LE-P23H-1. We used a linear mixed model to examine the effects of age on latency and amplitude of VEP and EER age groups P120, P180, and P360.

VEP N1, P1, and N2 latency and amplitude were analyzed across animal age. For 1 Hz VEP, N1 latency increased significantly with animal age (slope = 0.053 ± 0.020 ms/day, P < 0.01). For 10 Hz VEP, N1, P1, and N2 latency increased significantly with animal age (slope = 0.104 ± 0.011, 0.135 ± 0.011, 0.087 ± 0.023 ms/day, and P < 0.001 for all VEP peaks). Conversely, EER latency did not change with age. Signal amplitude of VEP or EER did not change with age.

To evaluate microvascular abnormalities in the macula and peripapillary area in diabetic patients without clinical signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and compare them with healthy control eyes, using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

A prospective study was performed of 49 eyes from 49 diabetic patients without clinical signs of DR and a control group of 52 eyes from 52 healthy normal individuals. The 3 × 3 mm macular scans and 4.5 × 4.5 mm optic disc scans were obtained with the OCTA RTVue-XR Avanti system. Angiograms from the superficial capillary plexus, the deep capillary plexus of the macula scans, and radial peripapillary capillary plexus of the optic disc scans were analyzed with MATLAB. Bcl-2 inhibitor Multivariate binary logistic regression and the leastabsoluteshrinkageandselectionoperator (LASSO) regression were used to select ideal parameters that distinguish diabetic eyes without DR from normal eyes. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated, and sensitivity and specificity were calculated.

Our final model identified FD-300 (foveal vessel density ina 300-µm-wideregionaroundfoveal avascular zone) as the only parameter selected by both the LASSO regression and the final multivariate logistic regression model that significantly differentiates diabetic eyes without clinical signs of DR from healthy normal eyes. The area under the ROC curve of FD-300 was 0.685, and sensitivity and specificity were 65.3% and 71.2%, respectively.

However, the effects of typical channel catfish pathogens on hybrids are not well understood, including the digenean Bolbophorus damnificus, which has caused significant losses in channel catfish production. Three experiments were conducted to assess the longevity and site specificity of 2 life stages of B. damnificus impacting catfish production. The first experiment investigated the cercarial longevity and infectivity of B. damnificus over time. Channel catfish were individually challenged with 100 cercariae/fish with cercariae aged in 12-hr time intervals over 5 days (n = 5 fish/time point), with metacercarial cysts excised and enumerated 14 days postchallenge. There was a decrease in cercaria viability and encysted metacercariae over the first 36 hr, with the 12-hr time the trunk/caudal peduncle had a 2-fold increase in the number of metacercariae excised, and although not significantly higher, results indicate this region should be the focal point of pondside assessment for the presence of B. damnificus because of ease of detection of encysted metacercariae.Although satisfying outcomes have been demonstrated in terms of autologous stem cell transplantation in the treatment of angiitis-induced critical limb ischemia (AICLI), few studies have systematically reported the recurrence conditions. In the current study, we aimed to investigate recurrence conditions of a relatively large AICLI cohort in our center during a long-term follow-up period. From May 2009 to August 2020, 181 patients with AICLI received peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) or purified CD34+ cells (PCCs) transplantation. link2 The main outcomes included recurrence and new lesions. Patient demographic data, ischemic limb characteristics, interventional characteristics, etc., were identified and analyzed. A logistic multivariable regression was performed to identify the independent risk factors for recurrence by a stepwise selection of variables. One hundred forty-eight patients were enrolled in this study. The mean follow-up period was 62.3 ± 37.4 months (range 12-144 months). The 5- and 10-year recurrence-free rates were 88.5% (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.1%-82.6%) and 71.7% (95% CI 7.6%-58.2%), respectively. The 5- and 10-year new lesion-free rates were 93.2% (95% CI 2.2%-89.0%) and 91.7% (95% CI 2.7%-86.6%), respectively. The finding of multiple limbs involved (OR 1.322 95% CI 1.123-12.549, P = .036) and ischemia relief period ≥5 months (OR 3.367 95% CI 1.112-10.192, P = .032) were demonstrated to be independent risk factors for recurrence in patients with AICLI who underwent cell transplantation. For patients with AICLI who responded to cell transplantation, the durability of this therapy was satisfactory, with 5- and 10-year recurrence-free rates of 88.5% and 71.7%, respectively. In the current study, rational engineering of guide RNAs (gRNAs) is performed to develop small-molecule-responsive CRISPR/Cas9. For our purpose, the sequence of gRNAs are modified to introduce ligand binding sites based on the rational design of ligand-RNA pairs. Using short target sequences, we demonstrate that the engineered RNA provides an excellent scaffold for binding small molecule ligands. Although the 'stem-loop 1' variants of gRNA induced variable cleavage activity for different target sequences, all 'stem-loop 3' variants are well tolerated for CRISPR/Cas9. We further demonstrate that this specific ligand-RNA interaction can be utilized for functional control of CRISPR/Cas9 in vitro and in human cells. Moreover, chemogenetic control of gene editing in human cells transfected with all-in-one plasmids encoding Cas9 and designer gRNAs is demonstrated. The strategy may become a general approach for generating switchable RNA or DNA for controlling other biological processes.

Characterizing and addressing racial and ethnic disparities in peripartum pain assessment and treatment is a national priority.

To evaluate the association of race and ethnicity with the provision and timing of an epidural blood patch (EBP) for management of postdural puncture headache in obstetric patients.

This cross-sectional study used New York State hospital discharge records from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2016, from mothers 15 to 49 years of age with a postdural puncture headache after neuraxial analgesia or anesthesia for childbirth. Statistical analysis was performed from February 2020 to February 2022.

Patients' race and ethnicity (reported as provided by each participating hospital; the method of determining race and ethnicity [ie, self-reported or not] cannot be determined from the data) were categorized into non-Hispanic White (reference group), non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and other race and ethnicity (including Asian and Pacific Islander, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and otheted with long-term adverse effects.Rodent brain tumor models have been useful for developing effective therapies for glioblastomas (GBMs). In this review, we first discuss the 3 most commonly used rat brain tumor models, the C6, 9L, and F98 gliomas, which are all induced by repeated injections of nitrosourea to adult rats. The C6 glioma arose in an outbred Wistar rat and its potential to evoke an alloimmune response is a serious limitation. The 9L gliosarcoma arose in a Fischer rat and is strongly immunogenic, which must be taken into consideration when using it for therapy studies. The F98 glioma may be the best of the 3 but it does not fully recapitulate human GBMs because it is weakly immunogenic. Next, we discuss a number of mouse models. The first are human patient-derived xenograft gliomas in immunodeficient mice. These have failed to reproduce the tumor-host interactions and microenvironment of human GBMs. Genetically engineered mouse models recapitulate the molecular alterations of GBMs in an immunocompetent environment and "humanized" mouse models repopulate with human immune cells. While the latter are rarely isogenic, expensive to produce, and challenging to use, they represent an important advance. The advantages and limitations of each of these brain tumor models are discussed. This information will assist investigators in selecting the most appropriate model for the specific focus of their research.Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are aggressive soft-tissue sarcomas that represent an important clinical challenge, particularly given their strong tendency to relapse and metastasize and their relatively poor response to conventional therapies. To date, targeted, noncytotoxic treatments have demonstrated limited clinical success with MPNSTs, highlighting the need to explore other key pathways to find novel, improved therapeutic approaches. Here, we review evidence supporting the crucial role of the RAS/MEK/ERK pathway and angiogenesis in MPNST pathogenesis, and we focus on the potential of therapies targeting these pathways to treat this disease. We also present works suggesting that the combination of MEK inhibitors and antiangiogenic agents could represent a promising therapeutic strategy to manage MPNSTs. In support of this notion, we discuss the preclinical rational and clinical benefits of this combination therapy in other solid tumor types. Finally, we describe other emerging therapeutic approaches that could improve patient outcomes in MPNSTs, such as immune-based therapies.Infectious diseases are a major threat to the global health. By examining tumors at a molecular level, oncologists can make a more precise diagnosis, help determine what might be driving the cancer's growth, and assess patients' eligibility for clinical trials.During the last decade, there has been great interest in elucidating the biological role of extracellular vesicles (EVs), particularly, their hormone-like role in cell-to-cell communication. The field of endocrinology is uniquely placed to provide insight into the functions of EVs, which are secreted from all cells into biological fluids and carry endocrine signals to engage in paracellular and distal interactions. EVs are a heterogeneous population of membrane-bound vesicles of varying size, content, and bioactivity. EVs are specifically packaged with signaling molecules, including lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, and are released via exocytosis into biofluid compartments. EVs regulate the activity of both proximal and distal target cells, including translational activity, metabolism, growth, and development. As such, EVs signaling represents an integral pathway mediating intercellular communication. Moreover, as the content of EVs is cell-type specific, it is a "fingerprint" of the releasing cell and its metabolic status. Recently, changes in the profile of EV and bioactivity have been described in several endocrine-related conditions including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. The goal of this statement is to highlight relevant aspects of EV research and their potential role in the field of endocrinology.
Are children who were conceived with infertility treatment at an increased risk of developing asthma and atopic conditions?

Infertility treatment is associated with an elevated risk of asthma and atopic conditions in early and middle childhood, even after adjustment for parental asthma and atopy.

Asthma and atopic conditions are prevalent in childhood. The development of these conditions may be linked to early life exposures, including the use of infertility treatments.

Upstate KIDS is a prospective cohort study of singletons and multiples born between 2008 and 2010. A total of 5034 mothers and 6171 children were enrolled and followed up until 2019, and 2056 children participated in the middle childhood follow-up.

Women reported the fertility agents used to become pregnant on a baseline questionnaire. Treatment was categorized as ART (∼22%) use, ovulation induction via oral/injectable medications with or without IUI (OI/IUI, ∼20%), or no treatment (∼58%). Outcomes were assessed by maternal report onimits the precision of our measures of association.

Though future research is needed to clarify the mechanisms involved, our findings support that both ART and OI/IUI influences the development of asthma and atopic conditions in the offspring from an early age.

Cannon (1871-1945) usually present two sides of his life one, where he was an outstanding man of science in the United States during the so-called "Golden Age of Medicine," and the other, where he was a leading humanitarian activist engaged in myriad causes, notably in the defense of Spanish democracy during the Civil War (1936-1939). However, these biographies fail to take into account that the apparent link between these two sides of his life was his religious conviction. This study summarizes the aims and accomplishments of the American Medical Bureau to Aid the Spanish Democracy (AMBASD) of which Cannon was chair between 1937 and 1939. Then, it examines Cannon's inspirational role on the international relief work with Spanish Republican refugees in France, through the case of the Varsovie Hospital of Toulouse that between 1945 and 1949 was jointly managed by the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) and the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee (JAFRC), and renamed Varsovie Hospital/Walter B. Cannon Memorial in recognition of the Spanish Republicans' debt for his extraordinary contribution during the Spanish Civil War and beyond. Finally, the article investigates the Unitarian roots of Cannon's humanitarian ethos by exploring the historical relations of this religious movement with science and with many major actors at Harvard University as well as the links of Cannon's relatives to Unitarianism. The analysis reveals Unitarianism's influence on Cannon's views about science, democracy, and liberty, as well as on his remarkable involvement in the medical solidarity movement with the Second Spanish Republic and other similar commitments. In sum, it shows how important is to branch out in our studies of medical and scientific practice to include practitioners' broader social and religious communities in order to understand their motivations, achievements, and behavior.
Aging changes in the neck, including platysma banding (PB), skin laxity (SL), and submandibular gland visibility (SGV), have a high degree of recurrence after rhytidectomy.

The authors sought to assess the long-term improvement in PB, SL, and SGV with addition of aplatysmal hammock flap to the extended deep-plane facelift and assess patient satisfaction.

This was a prospective study of 123 consecutive patients undergoing extended deep-plane facelift incorporating platysma hammock flap with or without midline platysmaplasty. Standard 2-dimensional patient photographs were employed to assess PB, SL, and SGV preoperative and >12 months postoperative. A 1-year postoperative patient satisfaction survey was conducted.

The platysmal hammock flap without midline platysmaplasty cohort had a significant (P < 0.01) reduction in mean preoperative PB, SL, and SGV scores from 1.03, 1.88, and 1.21 to 0.06, 0.03, and 0.15 at 21 months. The platysmal hammock flap with midline platysmaplasty cohort had a significant (P < 0.01) reduction in preoperative PB, SL, and SGV scores from 1.81, 2.43, and 1.81 to 0.10, 0.15, and 0.48 at 18 months. The platysmal hammock flap with and without midline platysmaplasty cohorts had 96.2% and 88.9% satisfaction, respectively.

Extended deep-plane facelift with a platysmal hammock flap achieves long-term, sustained improvements in PB, SL, and SGV; is well-tolerated; and results in substantial patient satisfaction.

This phenome-wide association study used health data from participants in 3 cohorts. The Electronic Medical Records and Genomics Sequencing (eMERGEseq) data set recruited predominantly healthy individuals from 10 US medical centers from July 16, 2016, through February 18, 2018, with a mean follow-up through electronic health records (EHRs) of 12.7 (7.4) years. The UK Biobank (UKB) cohort recruited participants from March 15, 2006, through August 1, 2010, with a mean (SD) follow-up of 12.4 (1.0) years. The Hereditary Cancer Registry (HCR) recruited patients undergoing clinical genetic testing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center from May 1, 2012, through December 31, 2019, with a mean (SD) follow-up through EHRs of with hereditary cancer genes may facilitate early detection and better management of cancers. This study highlights the potential benefits of using EHR data in genomic medicine.
Intravitreal bevacizumab effectively treats severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), but it enters the bloodstream and may reduce serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), potentially causing detrimental effects on developing organs in the premature infant.

To evaluate the association of intravitreal bevacizumab with plasma bevacizumab and VEGF concentrations at 2 and 4 weeks after predefined, de-escalating doses of intravitreal bevacizumab were administered to infants with severe ROP.

This phase 1 dose de-escalation case series study was conducted at 10 US hospitals of ophthalmology institutions from May 21, 2015, to May 7, 2019. Blood samples were collected 2 and 4 weeks after intravitreal bevacizumab injection. Participants included 83 premature infants with type 1 ROP in 1 or both eyes and no previous ROP treatment. Data were analyzed from April 2017 to August 2021.

Keratoconus can be a debilitating corneal ectasia in which the cornea thins, bulges, and steepens into a conical shape. Early features of keratoconus include myopia and irregular astigmatism, which affect vision and can be treated with contact lenses, collagen cross-linking, or, in advanced cases, corneal transplant. Recent estimates of the prevalence of keratoconus based on results of Scheimpflug imaging in young adults are as high as 1.2%. However, obtaining very large keratoconus data sets for a genome-wide association study (GWAS) is problematic because few population studies include Scheimpflug imaging and because severe keratoconus is relatively rare.

To identify novel keratoconus loci using corneal resistance factor (CRF) and central corneal thickness (CCT).

This multitrait GWAS used European ancestry CRF data from UK Biobank (UKB) (n = 105 427) and the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) (n = 18 307) and European ancestry CCT data from the International Glaucoma Genetics Consortium (IGGCCT-associated variants and published keratoconus variants. The PRS result showed that adding a CRF- or CCT-based PRS to the keratoconus PRS from previously published variants improved the prediction area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (from 0.705 to 0.756 for CRF and from 0.715 to 0.755 for CCT).

These findings support the use of multitrait modeling of corneal parameters in a relatively large data set to identify new keratoconus risk loci and enhance polygenic risk score models.

Although the catabolism of sialic acids has been intensively investigated in the field of host-microbe interactions, very limited information is available on microbial degradation of sialic acids produced by environmental microorganisms. In this study, the catabolic pathways of sialic acids within a microbial community dominated by 'Candidatus Accumulibacter' were evaluated. Protein alignment tools were used to detect the presence of the different proteins involved in the utilization of sialic acids in the flanking populations detected by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The results showed the ability of Clostridium to release sialic acids from the glycan chains by the action of a sialidase. Clostridium and Chryseobacterium can take up free sialic acids and utilize them as nutrient. Interestingly, these results display similarities with the catabolism of sialic acids by the gut microbiota. This study points at the importance of sialic acids in environmental communities in the absence of eukaryotic hosts.

To explore the association between AAS and common impact markers among high-impact ophthalmology journals from 2018 to 2019.

All articles published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology (AJO), JAMA Ophthalmology (JAMAO), and Ophthalmology (OPH) from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019, were collected for this cross-sectional study. Excluded articles were those missing Altmetric data at the time of data collection. The AAS and associated social media impact for each article were collected with the AAS calculator bookmarklet. Spearman rank correlation analyses and analysis of variance tests were conducted to assess differences in various metrics between AJO, JAMAO, and OPH. The study included articles published of all document types (article, conference paper, editorial, erratum, letter, note, retracted, review, and short s = 0.20; P < .001), news outlet reporting (AJO, ρ = 0.12; P < .001; JAMAO, ρ = 0.38; P < .001; OPH, ρ = 0.19; P < .001), and Twitter posts (AJO, ρ = 0.40; P < .001; JAMAO, ρ = 0.38; P < .001; OPH, ρ = 0.42; P < .001).

Results of this cross-sectional study suggest that citation rate has a moderate positive correlation with online and social media sharing of research in ophthalmology literature. The 4S-AF classification scheme comprises of four domains stroke risk (St), symptoms (Sy), severity of atrial fibrillation (AF) burden (Sb), and substrate (Su). We sought to examine the implementation of the 4S-AF scheme in the EORP-AF General Long-Term Registry and compare outcomes in AF patients according to the 4S-AF-led decision-making process.

Atrial fibrillation patients from 250 centres across 27 European countries were included. A 4S-AF score was calculated as the sum of each domain with a maximum score of 9. Of 6321 patients, 8.4% had low (St), 47.5% EHRA I (Sy), 40.5% newly diagnosed or paroxysmal AF (Sb), and 5.1% no cardiovascular risk factors or left atrial enlargement (Su). Median follow-up was 24 months. Using multivariable Cox regression analysis, independent predictors of all-cause mortality were (St) [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 8.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.60-25.9], (Sb) (aHR 1.21, 95% CI 1.08-1.35), and (Su) (aHR 1.27, 95% CI 1.14-1.41). For CV mortality and any thromboembolic event, only (Su) (aHR 1.73, 95% CI 1.45-2.06) and (Sy) (aHR 1.29, 95% CI 1.00-1.66) were statistically significant, respectively. None of the domains were independently linked to ischaemic stroke or major bleeding. Higher 4S-AF score was related to a significant increase in all-cause mortality, CV mortality, any thromboembolic event, and ischaemic stroke but not major bleeding. Treatment of all 4S-AF domains was associated with an independent decrease in all-cause mortality (aHR 0.71, 95% CI 0.55-0.92). For each 4S-AF domain left untreated, the risk of all-cause mortality increased substantially (aHR 1.35, 95% CI 1.16-1.56).

To evaluate anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor binding domain (anti-RBD) and neutralizing antibody (nAb) responses to COVID-19 vaccines longitudinally over 6 months in patients with cancer undergoing treatment or who received a stem cell transplant (SCT).

In this prospective, observational, longitudinal cross-sectional study of 453 patients with cancer undergoing treatment or who received an SCT at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in Kansas City, blood samples were obtained before 433 patients received a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine (BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273), after the first dose of the mRNA vaccine, and 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after the second dose. Blood samples were also obtained 2, 4, and 7 months after 17 patients received the JNJ-78436735 vaccine. For patients receiving a third dose of an mRNA vaccine, blood samples were obtained 30 days after the third dose.
