Our results demonstrate the importance of mechanochemical feedback in pattern formation on deforming membranes.The Islamic State (ISIS) was uniquely effective among extremist groups in the Middle East at recruiting Westerners. A major way ISIS accomplished this was by adopting Hollywood-style narrative structures for their propaganda videos. In particular, ISIS utilized a heroic martyr narrative, which focuses on an individual's personal glory and empowerment, in addition to traditional social martyr narratives, which emphasize duty to kindred and religion. The current work presented adult participants (n = 238) video clips from ISIS propaganda which utilized either heroic or social martyr narratives and collected behavioral measures of appeal, narrative transportation, and psychological dispositions (egoism and empathy) associated with attraction to terrorism. Narrative transportation and the interaction between egoism and empathy predicted video recruitment appeal. A subset of adults (n = 80) underwent electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements while watching a subset of the video-clips. Complementary univariate and multivariate techniques characterized spectral power density differences when perceiving the different types of narratives. Heroic videos show increased beta power over frontal sites, and globally increased alpha. In contrast, social narratives showed greater frontal theta, an index of negative feedback and emotion regulation. The results provide strong evidence that ISIS heroic narratives are specifically processed, and appeal to psychological predispositions distinctly from other recruitment narratives.The Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS) is a rare disorder characterized by heterogeneous clinical features, including growth retardation, typical facial dysmorphisms, and body asymmetry. Genetic alterations causative of SRS mostly affect imprinted genes located on chromosomes 7 or 11. Hypomethylation of the Imprinting Center 1 (IC1) of the chromosome 11p15.5 is the most common cause of SRS, while the Imprinting Center 2 (IC2) has been more rarely involved. Specifically, maternally inherited 11p15.5 deletions including the IC2 have been associated with the Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS), while paternal deletions with a variable spectrum of phenotypes. Here, we describe the case of a girl with a mild SRS phenotype associated with a paternally inherited 1.4 kb deletion of IC2. The father of the proband inherited the deletion from his mother and showed normal growth, while the paternal grandmother had the deletion on her paternal chromosome and exhibited short stature. Together with previous findings obtained in mouse and humans, our data support the notion that deletion of the paternal copy of IC2 can cause SRS.SARS-CoV-2, the pathogenic agent of COVID-19, employs angiotensin converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) as its cell entry receptor. Clinical data reveal that in severe COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 infects the lung, leading to a frequently lethal triad of respiratory insufficiency, acute cardiovascular failure, and coagulopathy. Physiologically, ACE2 plays a role in the regulation of three systems that could potentially be involved in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19 the kinin-kallikrein system, resulting in acute lung inflammatory edema; the renin-angiotensin system, promoting cardiovascular instability; and the coagulation system, leading to thromboembolism. Here we assembled a healthy human lung cell atlas meta-analysis with ~ 130,000 public single-cell transcriptomes and show that key elements of the bradykinin, angiotensin and coagulation systems are co-expressed with ACE2 in alveolar cells and associated with their differentiation dynamics, which could explain how changes in ACE2 promoted by SARS-CoV-2 cell entry result in the development of the three most severe clinical components of COVID-19.We aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively assess whether there is a discrepancy in detecting amyloid beta (Aβ) positivity between 18F-florbetaben (FBB) and 18F-flutemetamol (FMM) positron emission tomography (PET). We obtained paired FBB and FMM PET images from 107 participants. Three experts visually quantified the Aβ deposition as positive or negative. Quantitative assessment was performed using global cortical standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) with the whole cerebellum as the reference region. Inter-rater agreement was excellent for FBB and FMM. The concordance rates between FBB and FMM were 94.4% (101/107) for visual assessment and 98.1% (105/107) for SUVR cut-off categorization. Both FBB and FMM showed high agreement rates between visual assessment and SUVR positive or negative categorization (93.5% in FBB and 91.2% in FMM). When the two ligands were compared based on SUVR cut-off categorization as standard of truth, although not statistically significant, the false-positive rate was higher in FMM (9.1%) than in FBB (1.8%) (p = 0.13). Our findings suggested that both FBB and FMM had excellent agreement when used to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate Aβ deposits, thus, combining amyloid PET data associated with the use of different ligands from multi-centers is feasible.The habenula is an evolutionarily conserved brain structure, which has recently been implicated in fear memory. In the zebrafish, kisspeptin (Kiss1) is predominantly expressed in the habenula, which has been implicated as a modulator of fear response. Hence, in the present study, we questioned whether Kiss1 has a role in fear memory and morphine-induced fear memory impairment using an odorant cue (alarm substances, AS)-induced fear avoidance paradigm in adult zebrafish, whereby the fear-conditioned memory can be assessed by a change of basal place preference (= avoidance) of fish due to AS-induced fear experience. Subsequently, to examine the possible role of Kiss1 neurons-serotonergic pathway, kiss1 mRNA and serotonin levels were measured. AS exposure triggered fear episodes and fear-conditioned place avoidance. compound3k Morphine treatment followed by AS exposure, significantly impaired fear memory with increased time-spent in AS-paired compartment. link2 However, fish administered with Kiss1 (10-21 mol/fish) after morphine treatment had significantly lower kiss1 mRNA levels but retained fear memory. In addition, the total brain serotonin levels were significantly increased in AS- and Kiss1-treated groups as compared to control and morphine treated group. These results suggest that habenular Kiss1 might be involved in consolidation or retrieval of fear memory through the serotonin system.We study the dynamics of two non-stationary qubits, allowing for dipole-dipole and Ising-like interplays between them, coupled to quantized fields in the framework of two-mode pair coherent states of power-low potentials. We focus on three particular cases of the coherent states through the exponent parameter taken infinite square, triangular and harmonic potential wells. We examine the possible effects of such features on the evolution of some quantities of current interest, such as population inversion, entanglement among subsystems and squeezing entropy. We show how these quantities can be affected by the qubit-qubit interaction and exponent parameter during the time evolution for both cases of stationary and non-stationary qubits. The obtained results suggest insights about the capability of quantum systems composed of nonstationary qubits to maintain resources in comparison with stationary qubits.The role of isochrony in speech-the hypothetical division of speech units into equal duration intervals-has been the subject of a long-standing debate. Current approaches in neurosciences have brought new perspectives in that debate through the theoretical framework of predictive coding and cortical oscillations. Here we assess the comparative roles of naturalness and isochrony in the intelligibility of speech in noise for French and English, two languages representative of two well-established contrastive rhythm classes. We show that both top-down predictions associated with the natural timing of speech and to a lesser extent bottom-up predictions associated with isochrony at a syllabic timescale improve intelligibility. We found a similar pattern of results for both languages, suggesting that temporal characterisation of speech from different rhythm classes could be unified around a single core speech unit, with neurophysiologically defined duration and linguistically anchored temporal location. Taken together, our results suggest that isochrony does not seem to be a main dimension of speech processing, but may be a consequence of neurobiological processing constraints, manifesting in behavioural performance and ultimately explaining why isochronous stimuli occupy a particular status in speech and human perception in general.Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by retention of uremic solutes. Compared to patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD, those requiring haemodialysis (HD) have increased morbidity and mortality. We wished to characterise metabolic patterns in CKD compared to HD patients using metabolomics. Prevalent non-HD CKD KDIGO stage 3b-4 and stage 5 HD outpatients were screened at a single tertiary hospital. Various liquid chromatography approaches hyphenated with mass spectrometry were used to identify 278 metabolites. Unsupervised and supervised data analyses were conducted to characterize metabolic patterns. 69 patients were included in the CKD group and 35 in the HD group. Unsupervised data analysis showed clear clustering of CKD, pre-dialysis (preHD) and post-dialysis (postHD) patients. Supervised data analysis revealed qualitative as well as quantitative differences in individual metabolites profiles between CKD, preHD and postHD states. link3 An original metabolomics framework could discriminate between CKD stages and highlight HD effect based on 278 identified metabolites. Significant differences in metabolic patterns between CKD and HD patients were found overall as well as for specific metabolites. Those findings could explain clinical discrepancies between patients requiring HD and those with earlier stage of CKD.For many chronic stroke survivors, persisting cognitive dysfunction leads to significantly reduced quality of life. Translation of promising therapeutic strategies aimed at improving cognitive function is hampered by existing, disparate cognitive assessments in animals and humans. In this study, we assessed post-stroke cognitive function using a comparable touchscreen-based paired-associate learning task in a cross-sectional population of chronic stroke survivors (≥ 5 months post-stroke, n = 70), age-matched controls (n = 70), and in mice generated from a C57BL/6 mouse photothrombotic stroke model (at six months post-stroke). Cognitive performance of stroke survivors was analysed using linear regression adjusting for age, gender, diabetes, systolic blood pressure and waist circumference. Stroke survivors made significantly fewer correct choices across all tasks compared with controls. Similar cognitive impairment was observed in the mice post-stroke with fewer correct choices compared to shams. These results highlight the feasibility and potential value of analogous modelling of clinically meaningful cognitive impairments in chronic stroke survivors and in mice in chronic phase after stroke. Implementation of validated, parallel cross-species test platforms for cognitive assessment offer the potential of delivering a more useful framework for evaluating therapies aimed at improving long-term cognitive function post-stroke.
