The minimized "solid-liquid-air" triphase interface enables LMs to drastically reduce adhesion to a solid substrate, making them unique non-wetting droplets transportable with limited energy. The small volume, enclosed environment, and simple preparation render them suitable microreactors in industrial applications and processes such as cell culture, material synthesis, and blood coagulation. Extensive application contexts request precise and highly efficient manipulations of these non-wetting droplets. Many external fields, including magnetic, acoustic, photothermal, and pH, have emerged to prepare, deform, actuate, coalesce, mix, and disrupt these non-wetting droplets. Electric fields are rising among these external stimuli as an efficient source for manipulating the LMs with high controllability and a significant ability to contribute further to proposed applications. This Feature Article attempts to outline the recent developments related to LMs with the aid of electric fields. The effects of electric fields on the preparation and manipulation of LMs with intricate interfacial processes are discussed in detail. We highlight a wealth of novel electric field-involved LM-based applications and beyond while also envisaging the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development in this emerging research area.Erythema nodosum (EN) is a common panniculitis characterized by tender erythematous nodules predominantly on the pretibial area and represents a hypersensitivity reaction to multiple triggers. COVID19 infection and vaccination have been associated with EN in the adult population. We report a pediatric case of EN following COVID19 infection and review the literature on COVID19 infection and COVID19 immunization-related EN.Infection is a major source of complications in delayed diabetic wound healing. Increased understanding of differential bacterial responses to diabetic wounds will enable us to better understand chronic wound pathogenesis. Here we create delayed-healing wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus in non-diabetic and diabetic mice and used RNA-seq to compare bacterial gene expression profiles 3 or 7 days after infection. Analysis at day 3 demonstrated substantial transcriptomic differences between bacteria colonising non-diabetic and diabetic wound beds. Most of these transcriptional differences resolved by day 7, suggesting normalisation of many bacterial phenotypes later in the diabetic wound healing process. Lingering differentially expressed genes at day 7 were enriched for genes related to carbohydrate metabolism, which includes genes of the lac operon, and capsular polysaccharide synthesis, which includes the cap8 locus. These data encourage further research into host-pathogen interactions in wound healing and how they influence differential outcomes in the diabetic wound environment.
Anlotinib is a multi-target tyrosine kinase inhibitor, approved in China for treating several cancer types. Dose individualization based on therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is a useful tool to reduce toxicity. However, it is not convenient for patients to go to hospital for routine TDM via venous blood sampling at a certain time.

An ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for determination of anlotinib in human plasma and dried blood spot (DBS), characterized by simple sample preparation, high sensitivity, and short analysis time. The assay was validated in the concentration range of 0.2-200 ng/mL in plasma and 5-1000 ng/mL in DBS. This method was applied to monitor anlotinib exposure levels in patients with advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

The trough plasma concentration (C
) of anlotinib was highly variable among BTC patients with coefficients of variation (CV) of 47.5%. DBS and venous blood samples were also collected from NSCLC patients to determine whether DBS sampling is a viable alternative sampling approach. Pearson correlation coefficient (R) between DBS and plasma concentration was 0.985. Bland-Altman plot demonstrated that the difference between estimated and measured plasma concentration was -2.9%. And 87% of sample pairs had a maximal deviation of ±20%.

Anlotinib exhibits a high inter-individual variability in plasma exposure, and DBS sampling could be a promising tool for TDM of anlotinib.

Even dramatic events, such as foreign body (FB) inhalation, can occur in a subtle and non-specific manner. Pill aspiration is a rare yet overlooked cause of airway injury. It accounts for approximately 7% of all FB aspirations. In contrast, oral dysphagia and polypharmacology, mainly administrated in solid oral dosage forms (SDOF), like tablets and pills, are common conditions in older adults. Herein, we present a case of SDOF aspiration in a 78-year-old man. FB inhalation developed with general clinical deterioration and neurological impairment (delirium) rather than overt respiratory symptoms. Bronchoscopy provided remarkable images of this unexpected finding. Caregivers and healthcare workers must be aware of the risk of SDOF aspiration and adopt proper safety measures. Early recognition and bronchoscopy for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes can be lifesaving in such cases.
The next patient interaction is logical, essential, and largely done intuitively.

To design and test a succinct learning guide for student guidance and student-faculty interaction in conceptualizing the next patient interaction.

In 2021 and 2022, faculty scored questions from 1-5 Recognize deviation from the ideal? Articulate how and how much the situation deviated? Gage consequences of the situation? Assess own capabilities? To what extent does the student have a clear grasp of the procedural outcome? Faculty were also given open-ended questions.

Forty-eight reports were completed, 25 D3 and 23 D4. Three hundred thirty-five faculty entries were made in the questions calling for a 1-5 response out of a possible 336 responses. Statistically significant differences were noted. Students were better able to recognize the situation as different from ideal than to articulate how and how much the situation deviated. Students were better able to grasp how and how much this situation differs from the ideal than to assess own capabilities. D4 students were better able to recognize deviation from the ideal and to articulate how and how much the situation deviated than were D3 students. For open-ended questions, more students were scored as "Prepared" than were scored as "Unsure" and "Missed" combined.

Depending on the duration, hypernatremia can be differentiated into acute and chronic. According to severity mild, moderate and threatening hypernatremia. Finally, depending on pathogenesis, hypernatremia can be defined as hypervolemic, hypovolemic, and euvolemic. Acute hypervolemic hypernatremia is often secondary to increased sodium intake (hypertonic NaCl and NaHCO3 solutions). Instead, chronic hypervolemic hypernatremia may be an expression of primary hyperaldosteronism. Euvolemic hypernatremia occurs in diabetes insipidus depending on the underlying pathogenesis, it can be classified into two basic types neurogenic (or central) and nephrogenic. The neurogenic form may be triggered by traumatic, vascular or infectious events; the nephrogenic form may be due to pharmacological causes, such as lithium, or non-pharmacological ones, such as hypokalemia. For hypovolemic hypernatremia, possible explanations are renal or extrarenal losses. The main goal of treatment of hypernatremia is the restoration of plasma tonicity. In particular, if the imbalance has occurred acutely, rapid correction improves the prognosis by preventing the effects of cellular dehydration; if hypernatremia has developed slowly, over a period of days, a slow correction rate (no more than 0.4 mmol/L/h) is recommended.
We have previously described reversal of collateral ventilation (CV) in a severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patient with endoscopic polymer foam (EPF), prior to endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) with valves. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of this in a larger cohort and compare outcomes with a similar cohort with no CV.

Patients with severe COPD, with the left upper lobe (LUL) targeted for ELVR, were assessed for CV with high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). If fissure completeness was >95% they were enrolled as controls for valves alone (endobronchial valve control group [EBV-CTRL]). If fissure completeness was 80%-95%, defects were mapped to the corresponding segment, where EPF was instilled following confirmation of CV with CHARTIS. EBVs were inserted 1month afterwards.

Fourteen patients were enrolled into both arms. After 6months, there were significant improvements in both groups in forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1; +19.7% EPF vs. +27.7% EBELVR with minimal adverse reactions.Gaucher disease is a genetic disorder and the most common lysosomal disease caused by the deficiency of enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase (GCase). Although enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) is successfully applied using mannose-exposed conjugated glucocerebrosidase, the lower stability of the enzyme in blood demands periodic intravenous administration that adds to the high cost of treatment. In this work, the enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase was encapsulated inside virus-like nanoparticles (VLPs) from brome mosaic virus (BMV), and their surface was functionalized with mannose groups for targeting to macrophages. The VLP nanoreactors showed significant GCase catalytic activity. Moreover, the Michaelis-Menten constants for the free GCase enzyme (KM =0.29 mM) and the functionalized nanoreactors (KM =0.32 mM) were similar even after chemical modification. Importantly, the stability of enzymes under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 37 °C) was enhanced by ≈11-fold after encapsulation; this is beneficial for obtaining a higher blood circulation half-life, which may decrease the cost of therapy by reducing the requirement of multiple intravenous injections. Finally, the mannose receptor targeted enzymatic nanoreactors showed enhanced internalization into macrophage cells. Thus, the catalytic activity and cell targeting suggest the potential of these nanoreactors in ERT of Gaucher's disease.
